This was one of my first PC games ever! When I saw it released on Steam I was HYPED.
Nostalgia Fest! I'm ten years old again and these silly levels are Very Serious and the monsters are Very Scary.
Such old game of this caliber is always hard to recommend. Despite being slow paced and having low framerate there're some ideas and exploration involved. A bit wacky adventure where you play as an old fart and explore haunted castle full of different creatures. Don't become baldric should be your biggest concern here. Movement is annoying because it's flipped by 45 degrees making it a bit quirky. Overall gameplay is similar to old roguelike games with some simple platforming, finding some items to use somewhere is common. Most of the time ppl check on such games just to check them up without even playing again. Final rating - fart out of ten.
I had this game on an old DOS pc when I was a kid, and I loved to explore around the spooky tower and fight the cool creatures but I never progressed very far. Finally now, decades later, I decided to fulfil my destiny. The gameplay loop is actually quite unique. Each stage is a 5-layer tower. The objective is to explore this maze-like structure and clear out all the monsters, blow up the monster generator on layer three and then leave via the exit door on layer one. Strangely the game mechanics could be described as survival horror: you're in a spooky tower, it's a maze, you have a map. There are locked doors and keys and some puzzles and navigation problems and shortcuts to unlock. There are also survival mechanics: limited resources of spell ammo and health, while keeping your food and hydration up. So this game is basically resident evil except your an old pervert wizard with dementia. The overall style of the game is very charming. I love the music and the peculiar monster designs, the pixel art of this medieval tower structure. The main character is an unlikely hero, senile and wandering around apparently without any pants, stopping to pick his nose occasionally and a fondness for alcohol. The isometric perspective takes some getting used to and looks cool but can lead to some frustrations when aiming. It's a great game and decades ahead of its time.
I played this game a lot as a kid, both the shareware and the full version. I personally really like this game, but can't recommend it to anyone that hasn't played it before. ...Why, you may ask? Well, to start of it's just a horrible and lazy DOSBOX emulated version. No steam features at all, no achievements, no support for modern resolutions, no bugfixes (the audio is glitchy unless you configure it correctly) but besides all that it has a lot bad gameplay design by modern standards: Most mechanics can be completely ignored. - That includes killing most monsters until the generator is down, as their AI is dumb as bricks, HP sponges and do a lot of random-walk. They're a waste of resources and will respawn anyways. - Light switches are pretty useless, you can see in dark rooms anyways. - Door switches and door tiles can also be ignored, just leave them open for yourself since you don't know what monsters are doing in other rooms anyways. There is no tactical advantage to closing doors 99% of the time. Also, the controls feel dated and clunky, not as bad as The Abbey of Crime but you will still be fighting more against your character controls when killing enemies than the enemies themselves. Other than that the game holds well visually, in it's isometric pixel art style, but it does also have extremely annoying "features" like resetting your selected weapon after casting teleport or reveal; or Baron Baldric's tendency to randomly stop walking to pick his nose.
i'd love to kill these monsters, but they move around at warp speed in crackhead trajectories, and the main character's strongest spell still hits like wet tissue paper. he also seems more preoccupied with dying of thirst, or stopping everything he's doing to let off a fart.
Mystic Towers is an unusual shareware game from Apogee in that it's not one of their typical 2D platformer games, it's a 2D/3D ISO RPG Lite/Puzzle/Adventure game where you control an old geezer wandering around a building collecting stuff for your inventory and solving puzzles and doing various low action ISO RPG activities. I'm not sure why anyone would think playing an old man shuffling around various rooms in some castle/dungeon/whatever is going to be a lot of fun. But Apogee were sure paranoid about people pirating their shovelware (at the time... the mid 1990's had a bunch of awesome 3D games and other stuff so nobody would have ripped this off by "betraying" the shareware promise). Regardless, fixed resolution, low resolution, these are things that were going away when this game was released in the 90's. I couldn't recommend this to anyone but people on a nostalgia trip, and for people on a nostalgia trip for the 1990s... play Wolf3D, DooM, Wing Commander, Command and Conquer. Not whatever this is. Also, 3D realms is massively gouging this abandonware at stupidly inflated prices on Steam so that's another reason for this thumbs down.
You're playing as an old man. You don't see this nowadays. About the game? It is old and cluncky but it has its charm. But you should look up a guide before starting.
