A simple yet challenging puzzle game featuring my favourite taxonomic group of decomposers vs the restless dead.
First and foremost, figuring things out with my own grey matter is part of why I play games. So to me, a fairly average puzzle enjoyer, this game really hit a sweet spot in being clever yet manageable. However, as a curator, I usually read a few reviews of a game as well as checking out the general discussions before accepting it and there were quite a few comments on Mycelium Heavens rather cryptic opening gameplay. There is indeed no tutorial, and even if there is a quite stringent logic to the gameplay I do see how some might bounce off from the “learning by playing” approach the early levels throw at you. I do see how an optional tutorial might lend a hand to those struggling with the concept but for me personally, it did not bother me in the slightest, but be aware, your mileage may vary. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3455047841 This is, at its heart, a lightweight sokoban style puzzle game where you have to spread your strands of mycelium across the map in a bid to decompose zombies for nourishment. You begin with 3 energy, each spread of mycelium, sprouting fungus and decomposing action costs 1 energy, and each limb regenerates 2 while a whole zombie grants 3 energy. This is your whole “economy” in a nutshell, although it gets a few twists along the way as you progress through the levels. There is an undo action so you won't have to start from scratch if you fail to catch a jumping zombie at the exact opportune moment. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3459305734 The graphics are cartoony and welcoming, and each of the four seasons have its own flair and style. I really like the simplicity of it all and to me the various mechanics introduced in the later seasons really spiced the game up and added an additional challenge. The soundtrack and sound design was alright albeit a tad repetitive, nothing amazing but not outright terrible either. This is at its heart a genuine indie however and you can really see the love poured into it so any nitpicking comes from a place of love. Conclusion: A light recommendation to anyone intrigued by the combination of a somewhat unique theme and a logical problem solving gameplay featuring mycelium running its course through a grid. For me this was the perfect combination of relaxing gameplay and light to medium puzzle solving.
Difficulty : 2.5/5 (A bit Hard) Global : 2/5 (Good) Curator page : Anokturnus Mycelium Heaven is a turn-based puzzle game about a mushroom spreading and devouring everything in its path. I'll explain how the game works, however it lets you discover everything yourself through very small levels. So if you intend to play this game anyway, I suggest you stop reading. Though honestly, the game really doesn't emphasize on rule-discovery. Each puzzle comes in the form of a grid with cells containing zombies and mushrooms. You can infect any adjacent cell to a mushroom, however you also then need to spread if you want to be able to infect further cells. These actions cost 1 energy each exactly, and you start with 3 energies. Lots of actions are necessary to complete a puzzle, energy depletes very quickly so you need to eat to replenish it. Fortunately, the forest is full of zombies and corpses that can restore it all. Consuming zombies is not only a way to gain energy, it's the main objective as a puzzle is only completed once every single zombie is devoured. You probably guessed it, you need to infect and then spread on the cell where a zombie/corpse is located to eat it. Which means it costs 2 energies to gain 3... this game is all about resource management and optimization to get that devouring cycle going. Most of the mechanics involve moving or turn-based things that make everything nearly impossible to fully anticipate, which also means the game is a lot of trial and error. It's strategic trial and error though, you can't be completely sure of what you're doing but you're never trying anything blindly either. You know you don't want to waste any energy, and that's enough to forge a pretty strong intuition. The difficulty is overall fine, some levels can be hard. The screens get quite big as you progress in the chapters, and some mechanics are confusing. For example, the third chapter introduces snails that eat mushrooms, but their behavior is a bit weird. They're supposed to target the nearest mushroom I think, so you can't always spread as you want and you might need to wait for them to go away. I mean, this mechanic completely makes sense, but it's annoying and confusing to deal with because each time you try something different, the snails also act differently. This chapter also introduces "the other mushroom", which is a mechanic I enjoyed a lot. It's an enemy mushroom that follows the exact same rules as you and also tries to eat the zombies, so you have to beat the levels as usual while not letting it get a single piece of your food. As you know what the other mushroom wants to do, you also know what to prioritize. It rendered the game more logical and fun to me. Mycelium Heaven is a good game with interesting mechanics, yet I wouldn't recommend it to everybody. Despite not being very hard, its trial and error nature and absence of tutorial can make things a bit frustrating and rough, especially for inexperienced puzzle players. There's a demo though, so you can always try anyway.
If you enjoy reading this review, please consider following Vee's Cozy Corner for more.
It’s the zombie apocalypse! Luckily for you, you’re not a human or you’d already be one of them. What is a lonely fungus to do? A lot it turns out. You might just be humanity’s last resort and the solution to rid the planet of the proliferating zombies. Mycelium Heaven is a lovely puzzle game by the Spanish studio, 3DGoblinDev. Mycelium Heaven is a Sokoban style puzzle game with a twist. In this game you’re not a character that has to push objects or reach a goal post. You play as a fungus, and as fungus naturally do, you have to expand and grow to consume all the zombies on the board. There are four sections which you can access from the level selection screen. Each one of these sections is a season, and they all have their own challenges and specificity. Each season contains 30 levels of varying difficulties. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3439712101 The goal of each level is to consume all of the zombies. Some zombies are stationary while some walk, and some even jump out of their last resting place. The walking ones will only go back and forth on the same line so you know where they’ll be several moves ahead. The game is played on a square grid. The size depends on the level, and some levels can combine more that one grid. Every move takes energy whether it be expending, growing fungus or consuming a zombie. You start each level with three moves/energies. The only way to replenish it is to consume zombies or what they left behind. A different amount of energy is restored depending of what you consume. If you consume a zombie all of your energy is restored, but if you consume an arm as an example, you only restore part of your energy. Mycelium Heaven involves a lot of strategy. You have to plan your moves ahead, and know when to consume a zombie of part thereof to ensure that you have enough energy to complete the level. The game also has many unique mechanics. Every season has some new mechanics being introduced like the tree trunk and grave zombies. In the first area you are introduced to the tree trunk. When you consume this tree trunk and grow mushroom on it, it’ll let you expend the area you can reach further than you would normally with a regular tile. This is only one of many novel mechanics that are introduced throughout the game. I love that the mechanics are sparsely introduced in each area because it helped keep me interested until the end. The artwork is beautiful in its simplicity. It has a unique and polished low-poly style. I love how each season is represented with different color schemes. Autumn has a lot of warm colors like orange and warmer greens, spring has a lot of browns and greens, and summer is represented by lots of bright greens. Winter on the other hand has of course whites, but also a colder color scheme to represent the cold months. Even though the levels are similar in style, the change in colors and small details make each area stand out. I also love the soundtrack, because the sounds create an immersive and relaxing experience. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3439712025 Once I understood the gameplay, I enjoyed Mycelium Heaven however my experience would have been greatly improved with a proper tutorial. You are thrust into the game with minimal tips. The first level shows you where to click, but that’s about it. The tips you get in the first levels are extremely basic, and not enough for a first time player to learn how to play. You’ll have to go by trial and error before you start to understand gameplay and the different mechanics. If you never played a Sokoban style puzzle, and this is your first experience, you might be lost and get discouraged. This is too bad because once you get the hang of it, it’s a fun and challenging game that deserves to be discovered. Mycelium Heaven is an excellent puzzle game with over 100 levels. This game is a new take on an old classic. With its unique and varied mechanics, it truly take the Sokoban style puzzle to the next level. The lovely low-poly artwork and relaxing soundtrack gives this game a cozy vibe, however beginners might find the task of learning the ropes daunting due to the lack of a proper tutorial. Overall it’s a fantastic game, and I would recommend it to players who are already acquainted with Sokoban style puzzles.
Positives

Challenging puzzles
Diverse innovative mechanics
Beautiful low-poly artwork

Negatives

Not beginner-friendly because of the lack of a proper tutorial

For more cozy gaming, visit the Vee's Cozy Corner website.
This game refuses to tell you it's rules, expecting you to puzzle them out by example. Sometimes that dynamic works great in a game (eg the witness). But here, it really doesn't. Eventually I got the gist of pretty much what I could and couldn't do but that process wasn't fun. And then, once I could properly play the game and could finish levels... I realized the game itself wasn't that much fun either, relying a lot on trial and error to progress on each level. Perhaps this means I still didn't get the whole set of mechanics, even though they are pretty simple as far as I could tell. But the way they are presented, while cute, just doesn't feel intuitive so even when I could enumerate the rules, I found myself having to constantly remind myself what they were, rather than focusing on what the challenge of the level was. I mean, can you imagine something less fun than that in a puzzle game? I can't, really. At least there's unlimited undo. "spoilers" in case you wan to know the general shape of the rules: You have to digest all of the zombies, and each time you extend your network of mushrooms it uses up energy which is refilled to a different amount depending on what type of thing you digest; an arm gives you less energy a full zombie gives you more. So you trade off expanding your network and feeding your network. Now that I more or less understand what I'm doing it's a tolerable puzzle game, but not particularly inspired in the 15 or 20 or so levels that I played, and the unpleasant on-boarding makes it a hard pass for me personally.
Post on February 28th once game is live: I received a free key to this game as part of the Queens of Cosy curation page. I do enjoy a puzzler game so thought I'd give this a go. The pros to this: The artwork is lovely, there are some really nice animations as each level loads, fast loading speed, pleasant music and over 100 levels with beautifully-designed biomes making this a lasting experience for those who enjoy a puzzler. The drawbacks to this: I found this quite a difficult game and the lack of tutorial really emphasised this for me. Eventually, I figured that you had actions and consuming zombies refilled these so you'd have to plan your way across the board, I would have preferred some hint or help options though and a bit of guidance as it did take me some time to get into this and by the sixth level I was struggling. Though I do enjoy puzzles, I found this a bit on the frustrating side so whether you enjoy it and find it cosy is relative based on your definition of cosy. For me, who isn't much of a strategy gamer and enjoys a lot of life-sim types, I found this a bit on the difficult side, however, my partner who regularly plays souls-like and survival horror games found this very enjoyable and relaxing and would replay. Within my own group of friends I can clearly see some of my friends really liking this and others finding this not for them. It is clear that the creators of this game have put a lot of effort into it and whilst not to my personal tastes, I do think it has a place in the collections of people who don't mind a game that requires patience and planning. I would therefore recommend this but with caveats that it specifically caters to puzzle and strategy game fans who relish a bit of a challenge.
A great game. Simple mechanics that will make you rack your brains.
