I am a huge fan of the World of Wilderness after finishing the Chicken Police games and now this latest detective game is a nice new addition to that world. The game's biggest strengths are the character writing/dialogue, art direction, great voice acting, and expansive macro-world building while still keeping focus on a relatively small-scale mystery case. The Wild Gentlemen writers really know how to write compelling duos. I already knew this from the Chicken Police games but it's once again highlighted with Moses and Plato's exchanges and personalities. The game's actual mystery and investigation progression were fairly simple and straightforward. Not that they were bad but, in comparison to everything else in the game, I would consider them two of the game's weaker aspects. The turn-limiting mechanic that limits how many suspects can be questioned on certain topics before the story advances is a fresh new addition and encourages multiple playthroughs to unlock all of the game's facts/clues but I personally prefer traditional investigations that allow you to question characters on anything and everything freely. I also wish Moses's sensory mechanic was utilized more in the gameplay. Other than adding flavor text to different map sections, it only became truly relevant to the game twice. This also isn't a complaint really but I have to say I greatly miss the photorealistic animal/live-action hybrid designs this team used in the Chicken Police games. I thought that style looked fantastic and made the games extremely unique looking. But I totally understand why they might've switched to a traditional 2D style as it probably increases the chance of mainstream appeal and makes it easier to show so many new and different settings.
SPOILERS for into the HIVE!:
Marty MacChicken died and the Chicken police were no more
The best team to be is Moses and Plato! I've played both Chicken Police games and Zipp's Cafe and this game is equally great! 10/10
RIP Marty MacChicken. You're flying high now O7
I cannot recommend this game enough. From start to finish, I simply wanted to learn more. More about The Wilderness and its inhabitants, more about our dear detectives. This game did not disappoint in this, giving us so much information that I had to go back and read up on the events of the world, the histories of these countries and the wars they have fought. Each place left an impression and made me want to explore more. But most of all, I truly wanted to know more about our detectives. Moses and Plato play off of each other so well, but have their own charm that enables the pair of them to feel they could work on their own. Now I'm curious about how they met, how we got to this point. Moses has been counting the days from the start, and it would be a disservice to leave us not knowing what day 1 was like. The gameplay itself, while basic, actually made me feel like I was genuinely trying to solve this mystery. I want more. I can hope for more. Hell, I'll write more myself if I have to. The World of Wilderness is truly something special, and deserves to flourish. I will be playing this again and again, adding this to my short list of yearly replays.
The game itself it's fine, but there are a couple of mechanics that are barely used (like presenting items to witnesses) or the card game, that has one single opponent. Now, when it comes to the mystery, it broke a couple of the classic rules for solvable mysteries (I won't specify which ones as to avoid spoilers) which made it so that you must make a couple wild suppositions to solve it on your own. It could've been a bit better, specially because a couple characters feel underutilized too, not being neither red herrings nor accomplices nor relevant witnesses. But it was a good time in general, would play a sequel.
І ця гра називається - Moses & Plato - Last Train to Clawville. Moses & Plato - Last Train to Clawville
