Played On: HTC Vive
Much like the infamous Accounting, it's extremely hard to describe Moonatees without giving too much of the fun away. Essentially, you're a Manatee who also happens to be an astronaut and you need to complete a variety of random tasks; so be prepared to be floating around in the zero gravity of space. While the game holds your hand for the first part, during the second part you are let loose to completely explore on your own and figure out what to do. You only have your flippers to grab things, so be prepared for a mildly frustrating but still amusing experience. The game makes you feel as dumb as a real Manatee looks, especially when you're trying to figure out how to finish your tasks. The bright, colorful, cartoony aesthetic of the whole title also contributes to making you feel intellectually meek, but it's all in good fun. It's actually pretty hilarious to reduce yourself to the nearly Kindergarten level of thought needed in order to understand Moonatees. If you've enjoyed quirky and amusing games such as Accounting or Job Simulator, then Moonatees is going to be right up your alley. It's a unique, fun, free experience unlike any other on the Steam market, and you'll definitely need to let go of your IQ while playing it. Although the developer says that people have spent, on average, an hour and a half in the game before finishing it, I was able to fully explore everything and figure out how to complete it within half an hour. A bit of fair warning, though, this was the first game to make me nauseous in VR, and I'm not a person that gets motion sickness easily. Moonatees puts you in a quirky little VR world where you deal primarily with the effects of zero gravity and not having opposable thumbs. It's weird enough to be interesting and there were enough things for me to poke at and figure out that I played it more than once. There are no enemies or time limits, so there is a non-competitive exploration vibe. As of the posting of this review I have just over 1 hour of gameplay logged. For five bucks, there are much worse VR games out there. I'm glad to have been able to support the devs before they released their game for free (as they said they eventually plan to) and hope they keep creating.

Moonatees is a free VR experience game, that is the most realistic VR space manatee simulator. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. You play as a freshly recruited, clumsy manatee in zero gravity playground. You face mundane tasks and an incoming asteroid that you have to beat without opposable thumbs in a zero gravity environment. There are puzzles here. Has a tutorial. The grabbing system is hard but true to the character. Sort of funny. Could be ok for kids. Try it, you might like it.
"Moonatees" is more of a VR tech demo than a game. The premise is, well, as the blurb says, you control a manatee in space and have to bash stuff around to save yourself from an asteroid, etc etc. The developers here once more failed to understand the very important and basic premise of VR... if the only thing cool about your product is VR support, then your product is not cool at all. VR aside this fails terribly in comparison with other games, from the cel-shaded looking low poly "art", weak premise, lack of polish, and poor gameplay. This features fairly low quality low poly 3D visuals which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and it's clear the developers behind this didn't understand that. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
