(You need at least 2 hours to get used to it.) You play as a Montero, a monster hunter who is skilled at various tasks, from exploring, hunting/gathering, mining/crafting, to fighting monsters, of course. You start at your base camp and you take your chariot/wagon to the village/settlement that needs your help. There are three difficulties to choose from before each run. There are many different things to do in this game, but the ultimate goal for each run is to help the villagers by doing what they need. And then you embark on your journey in the surrounding environment that is randomly generated in order to take care of this problem for the village. Each run is done from beginning to end, from the time you start until the time you either complete the quest or die trying. Each run takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, and that is depending on how you approach the situation. Speed is not your friend in this game, rushing will inevitably get you killed. Because of this, the game has a normal speed and a slowed-down movement speed. I know they are supposed to be walk and run speeds, but walk is really too slow, and run only looks like walking in other games. The game has a lot of text to read, and some times this can get rather tedious. Once you get used to the way the game is played, this becomes a lot easier. Of course having such significant skills to begin the game requires you to know where to keep all of that information and to be able to use it. There are manuals in the beginning of each run that explains all of the crafting recipes, creatures to be found, their weaknesses, etc. If you really want to succeed in this game, you really have to read. This is a big problem if you want to just jump into the game from the beginning blind, it's not really fun either way, either spend forever reading or go out there and get killed, not knowing the proper ways to survive. But this is the game's way of removing progression. All of the crafting, skills, masteries are there, so you can approach game however you wish. The combat system is important to learn early in the game, because your survival depends on it. Of course crafting goes hand-in-hand with that because you need to craft appropriate materials and supplies from what you can gather in order to help with injury and wounds. The battle system is carried out in an asynchronous turn-based format, where you and the creature/person you are fighting each have your own cool-downs and depends on your status effects and what actions you take, your cool-downs are varied. In addition, what action you choose comes directly out of your items in your inventory, there is no equipping and removing of weapons or armor, you just click on the item you want to use for the particular action of the fight, such as punch with fist, slash with knife, etc. You choose each action of the battle right from your inventory every time. Speaking of inventory management, this is yet another thing to learn, with a significant learning curve. You have to decide long and hard, through learning how to play by experience, on how to manage your short inventory. Initially I thought my inventory was only six slots, and this was driving me nuts, and I was carrying my game manuals and had no space for anything else. But if you look carefully at your inventory, there are more slots, just not very obvious in the beginning, and you can put more things in there. So you can carry a bunch more, but still not enough. Large things, small things, each takes up one slot, and they do not stack. Fortunately you can just throw everything on the ground next to your workbench, this tends to be the best thing to do. Otherwise you would be picking up one thing and throwing away another constantly. Crafting can only be done at your workbench, and this is a problem if you are out in the field and need to craft some quick bandages or potions, you need to gather the materials you need and bring them back to your workbench in the village in order to get what you need. The entire village and each run's world is not large, so this is not a huge issue. Though this still takes up additional time that may not be necessary. It would be lovely to just have something next to the inventory that you can open that has a few slots that you can use to craft on the run.
The Good Parts About Montero
+ Good concept + Randomly generated village and surroundings for each run + No leveling up (you can head in and approach the given problem your own way) + Personal (player) progression to better progress + Day/Night cycle with different visuals and your Montero is able to carry out tasks a bit differently. + Intricate crafting/combat systems that are nicely meshed together (they do have a steep learning curve) + Priced fairly
The Bad Parts
- Way too much reading in the beginning and learning, not to mention the font is perhaps too small. (Need to figure out a better way to introduce the player without this seeming to be too cumbersome). I think I spent about 30 minutes reading through the manuals after a couple of deaths and being totally clueless, after which I thought, What did I just read? - So to piggy back off that, expect some grammar errors in English. Because of the heavy amount of text, there are more grammar errors than usual, I think. - Movement too slow, coupled with the need to return to village for certain things such as crafting (see above) - Physical movement clippings on other environmental objects. In the beginning I had no idea that certain spaces that looked like I should be able to walk into/through were not, because of the way the physical hitboxes are set up. This gets better after a while, but still annoying after a while. - Too much to learn before the game is enjoyable, from many different aspects. Of course you could play through a few times blind and see if you can get anywhere, but I really doubt it. This is a game that you need to really sit down and learn the system before you jump in. That is unfortunate because I believe that is what's going to drive a lot of people away from the game. - Inventory a bit too small, this could benefit from an expanded inventory. Or perhaps I am just not very good at managing it yet. - No saves! I know each run is supposed to be unique, but it can last a while. If you are having a good run, you really don't want to just drop it and start anew next time. But there is no way to save. So if you don't have at least 2 hours free, don't start because each run takes a while.
Conclusion
Montero is a very slow-paced game, it has some interesting systems built in and a steep learning curve. This is difficult to pick up, and difficult to master. But for people who want to try a different style of game, this may be a good option. I have to say, first two hours I did not really have fun at all, I thought the controls were awful and I was dying left and right for no good reason (at least what I thought was no good reason anyway). The base price of 3.99 USD is quite reasonable, given that it is a personal project developed by one person, and it has a certain amount of replay value because you have different approaches through all of the tools and resources available to you in order to help the village in need. Overall I would give this game a 6/10. Sure it has flaws, but the game also has its own merits. I do recommend this game, but with a caveat that it is a very odd game and takes a lot of time and dedication to get used to in order to enjoy it better.
I received the product for free. Long story, shrt story, this is wat we've got. + -This is the only one game in such setting. Trust me, i'll tryed to find. -This is a challange. Not for your fingers, like in Dark Souls, but for your mind and ability to work under time pressure. You must managed your resources and always be attentive. -Music like in Arcanum. True fans will appraise. Hella good ambient, folks! -This game is a simbul of what we all may do. Its made by a single man ( just immaginate amount of effort ! Graphics, animation, teksts!), who had learnd Unity from 0 and made his dream of being a game dev come true! This is the 2nd game already (check Rayless btw) - This is not another one money clikcer time waster, but a produck made with soul. - -Graphic. This is not an A+ class project, made by a single man, so you will not wait a picture like in a Witcher 3, right?) -Controlling. You will curce every thing you know, while moving through the forest, trust me, but after 3-4 runs you' ll get used and stop mention it. - Unguses! This little f@ckers!!!!
played for about 5 minutes if you have a few hours to sit and read all the books and figure out how to play then it may be worth a try but with limited gaming time not really worth it to me reminds me of vanilla runescape lite version
Game "Montero" intrigues you from the first minute. At first it seems that the game is quite impassable, but it did not annoy me, but only forced me to try harder. Over time, you understand how the game is arranged, how important preparation, collection of supplies and the choice of weapons are, and the game turns into a pleasure! Fight against the main boss is the end point of your mission, but to be there you need to be well prepared. Even in the Stronghold, you can choose a few items that you can take with you on a mission, and if at first the range of choice is small, then with each completed mission it will expand. In the village, you begin your investigation and arrangements. Five houses - five villagers, each of them can report something about the main monster. In houses, basements, gardens you will find a lot of items (useful and not). You have to provide your Montero with food, potions (fighting and healing) and weapons. After that, you will explore the territory; and the evidence (fur, altars, etc.) will tell you who you will have to defeat. And now you can go for the main boss, the only thing you will have to do is to find it. Don't forget to check your hunger and stress. Interesting, exciting, intriguing.... I want to add that after the release the game continues to develop, the author is constantly adding something new, so the game does not get you bored)))))
