I LOVE IT! I loved the first game, and now I love this one, too. It may or may not be a direct sequel to the first game- I'm not sure- but this game takes the foundation that the first game built, and doesn't just run with it, it runs two marathons with it. It adds so much to what the first game was, to the point where the original Monster Loves You! almost looks like a prototype for this game and the world it weaves. It's a lot bigger, there's so much more story, and there's so many details. For a part-resource management game, what's interesting is that spending your resources- Guts, brains, health, like it shows in the trailer- isn't always the right choice/the best choice. A lot of the time, it is the better choice, but not always. I like that, because it's basically the game's way of teaching you + reinforcing the fact that you need to SAVE your resources, as much as possible. Also, since it's a hybrid of a resource management game and a mainly story-driven game, it means there's not always an obvious choice. The right choice isn't always "whatever costs resources, because there's no way that's wrong". It gives a lot more freedom to the player's choices, and the narrative, and I just think it's a really well-executed idea. Oh, and the ending made me cry. Now, tips for new players: 1. SAVE. YOUR RESOURCES. I mean it. Don't spend resources on choices that matter less/don't matter at all, in the bigger picture. If an important choice comes later on, and you don't have the resources to do the right thing, it's going to bite you. 2. If it's not going to cost you anything, it's ok to be mean sometimes. This is mostly another resource management thing. Remember: You're a monster in this game. Being nice takes effort, aka resources, and it's usually brainpower, which is one of the most important, in my experience. If it won't build your malice, or if your malice is at 0, and you're low on resources, go ahead and be a little mean. The same goes for meaner choices that won't hurt your relationship with a character. In the game, I made the mistake of wasting all my brainpower, then later I snapped at a friend who really didn't deserve it. Seriously, save your brainpower. 3. Read your opponent's moves very carefully in fights. You're gonna start starving once you're an older monster, so your health might be low a lot, which means you can't hardly take a hit in a fight. Fight carefully. 4. Speaking of fights, again, the choice that costs a resource isn't always the best option. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. Also, most of the time, there's a resource-free choice that'll win, so unless you really can't tell which one it is, try to find the good free choice. This game really wants to make you think.
Very fun game, especially if you like choices matter genre. The way you manage your resources (health, intelligence and fighting spirit) mainly influences course of the game and decisions you make. It is also childish to a certain extent and puts the main emphasis on friendship. I will replay the game and make different choices this time, just to see how big an influence it will have on the overall game and the ending. In any case, I think it's worth the price and it will give you a solid 8-10 hours of entertainment.
I battled authority, became the ruthless leader of a gang, and ate my enemies to gain their power. But there was this one persistent weirdo who always wanted to fight, and I kind of liked him, so I worked to control my instinctive greed and malice so that we could be friends. The world is so strange and absolutely brutal, and just wonderfully written. There really are no easy choices - everything is a balance between survival and building a better world, and you will need to strategize and save your resources. A big part of the charm is the art. Everything is hand drawn storybook-style, whimsical monster designs and the ugly-beautiful ruins they inhabit. There is so much personality to the characters, with expressions ranging from hilarious to touching to terrifying, and they each have their own custom speech bubbles that resemble them (I love that!). It's a delight to take in all the details. So it's like reading a storybook with a more mature narrative, with real stakes and heartache and hope and triumph. Battles and adventure, introspection, and a very strange group of friends. There is also a lot more content than I expected, even with the concise writing, it was around 9 hours for my first playthrough.
I was going into this game to role play as Mike Wazowski but instead found a game with a lot of heart and soul. Really well crafted visual novel game. Loved the storybook art style and the music that amplifies events in the story. The writing for the story and the characters are well made as well, I found myself getting attached to the cast and honestly thinking about the decisions I made. Overall a fun experience and worth the price I believe. Also made a funny play through of mine if anyone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zodDHG10Czc&ab_channel=Khanzai
out of all the games i have played in my life, and i have been gaming since computer monitors extended healthily outward in three spatial dimensions, this is the 2nd ever game to make me cry. i cannot recommend it enough. artwork: phenomenal. writing: phenomenal. music: phenomenal. other aspects that are less outward and listable: we appreciate our behind-the-scenes workers in this household; phenomenal.
RPG/Survival/VN hybrid. It certainly is a video game. I genuinely cared about most of the characters by the end. Rancid best girl(?).
Beautiful game in the genre of visual novel with elements of rpg. The game looks like paper cutouts of characters. Every step we have to make some decision. On the basis of our choices our hero is given resources, or taken away. Resources play an important part here. Without them it is impossible to move forward in the wanderings. On the way we will meet various characters with whom we will also have to interact and who will react differently to our decisions. :happymeat: Below is a small gameplay of the game: https://youtu.be/PtevUn7k8lY
It isn't very often that a sequel to a game improves and expands upon the concept of the original in every conceivable way. This is one of those rare moments, when the follow up to a piece of media really HAS made a note of everything that made the first one great, and perfectly expanded on it. The story is far more compelling, you feel much more involved in the plot, it makes you feel connected to roster of main characters- and every action you take feels like it produces a response from the world that both makes sense, and is an appropriate response or possible outcome. This game's a pristine baby doll in the slime, - give it a good whirl.
Really nice game, a true hidden gem! I especially love how the choices presented aren't always obvious, like some choices require you to spend resources but that doesn't always mean they're the better choice over free actions. The choices matter a lot in this game too, even some really small actions that may seem inconsequential can have a big effect later on. The characters are written really well, so full of personality and variety, I've quickly grown to care about them as if they were my real best friends. Speaking of personality, the art-style is full of it too! I couldn't stop admiring the characters' visual designs. The time played at review time is exactly how long it took me to play through the whole thing once, but I'm sure I'll play it again and again. There are just so many things that can be done differently, mistakes to learn from, etc
Imaginative, compelling, deep, fun, funny, well-written and surprisingly emotionally impactful. A charming game with a lot of heart and a lot of choice to give the player. Even after seeing all the rave reviews, I didn't expect to love it quite so much. It's a gem.
