I want to preface this by saying I only played for almost 8 hours because that's how long it took me to grind for achievements. You can bypass more than 75% of the features of this game if you only want the achievements. But even so, things like relationship-building and crafting are not at all compelling. It's also a shame that so many of the assets are cute but the human/player sprites are god awful. I think I got this game for like <$2 in a bundle so I'm fine with it being kinda bad but I would not bother generally.
The game has a lot of potential & very good, enjoyable mechanics, but unfortunately it was abandoned & it shows in the lack of scenes in the "ending", among other things. It’s still enjoyable but you have to keep in mind that it’s abandoned.
Very basic farming sim that I recommend buying on a massive sale! Also don't buy if you are colour blind, you will go mad trying to find the highest level ore. A few things this game does very well: + No time pressure, you only use energy for doing stuff and you need to go to sleep when it is depleted. + Dedicated time for dungeon crawling, you get some extra energy after a short nap to go in. + Progression feels alright, upgrades are impactful enough. + Farming your own fight buddies is cool! + Creature collection and fights in a farming game is a nice idea. + Doesn't artificially increase your playtime, after 12 hours you have seen everything with 100 % achievements! Many things this game does very poorly: - Inventory management is a mess. - Big energy problems for the first hours ingame. - No interactive items ingame, not even at the special events. - Very lackluster story, no meaningful connection to the npcs. - It's hard to spot ore and collectibles between wild plants. - Meaningless special events. - No way to revive dead plantimals or upgrade your fighter shed. - Scripted events happen at certain days despite you being way further ahead in the story already. There surely are better farming games out there, but if you don't expect a lot, you can have fun for a couple hours.
easy to play, not hard very little challenge. It's cute. Has some strange characters. I would recommend you get it on sale, not really worth full price as it seems like it's missing something, maybe a challenge or depth. But it's fun and easy to play.
It feels bad to control, to move around, to navigate places, to manage items, to engage in battle. Cutscenes and guidance are clunky. Of what I've seen of the characters and story, they're empty and unappealing. I think the environment art is alright but visually messy in places, but the character art and sprites are REALLY ugly. From other reviews, it sounds like I'm not missing much by calling it early. I'd like to see a game that combines farming with creature collecting but I haven't yet seen one that does it well.
Monster Harvest, developed by Maple Powered Games and published by Silver Lining Interactive, sets out with a genuinely appealing premise: combine the laid-back satisfaction of farming simulations with the excitement of creature collection and battling. It’s the kind of concept that feels immediately intuitive—grow crops, mutate them into living companions, and then take those creations into combat. That central idea gives the game a strong hook from the very beginning, suggesting a playful twist on familiar genre formulas rather than a complete reinvention. The game follows a familiar structure for farming sims, placing players in charge of a neglected farm that gradually becomes productive through clearing land, planting crops, and crafting tools. The day-to-day rhythm is comfortable and easy to settle into, with a steady loop of tending fields, managing resources, and expanding your capabilities. What gives this routine a distinct flavor is the mutation system tied to crops. By applying different types of slime, ordinary plants can transform into “Planimals,” hybrid creatures that act as companions in battle. This mechanic introduces a sense of experimentation that keeps early gameplay engaging, as players are encouraged to discover new combinations and outcomes through trial and error. The transition between farming and combat adds another layer to the experience. While daytime is generally reserved for managing the farm, exploration and dungeon crawling come into focus as the game progresses, allowing players to test their Planimals in battle. Combat itself is relatively straightforward, built around turn-based encounters that emphasize basic strategy and resource management. While functional, the system lacks the depth needed to fully capitalize on the creature-collecting aspect. Planimals are interesting in concept, but their abilities and roles do not vary enough to create meaningful strategic diversity, which can make battles feel repetitive over time. Narratively, Monster Harvest provides a light framework that supports the gameplay without becoming a central focus. The story revolves around mysterious experiments involving slime and the consequences they bring to the surrounding environment. While this setup has the potential for intrigue, it remains fairly surface-level, offering just enough context to justify the mechanics without developing into something more compelling. Characters within the world are present but underutilized, lacking the depth and personality that often make farming simulators feel alive and interconnected. As a result, the game’s setting can feel more like a backdrop than a fully realized community. Visually, the game leans into a colorful pixel art style that complements its tone. The environments are bright and inviting, with a charm that fits well with the relaxed nature of farming gameplay. Character and creature designs are simple but effective, particularly the Planimals, which reflect the creativity behind the mutation system. The soundtrack supports this atmosphere with gentle, unobtrusive music that enhances the sense of calm during farming segments while shifting slightly in tone during combat. Overall, the presentation is cohesive, even if it does not push beyond genre expectations. Where Monster Harvest struggles most is in its execution and long-term engagement. The core systems, while promising, feel underdeveloped, and the game does not introduce enough new mechanics or challenges as it progresses. This leads to a sense of stagnation, where the gameplay loop remains largely unchanged from beginning to end. Repetition becomes more noticeable over time, especially in combat, which lacks the complexity to stay engaging across extended play sessions. Additionally, technical issues and inconsistencies have been a point of criticism, occasionally disrupting the experience and reinforcing the sense that the game could have benefited from more refinement. Despite these issues, there is an underlying charm to Monster Harvest that makes it easy to appreciate on a conceptual level. The idea of blending farming with creature creation is genuinely creative, and there are moments where the game captures a relaxing, almost meditative quality that fans of the genre will recognize. It is not difficult to imagine a more polished version of this concept becoming something truly special, which makes the current execution feel like a missed opportunity rather than a complete misstep. In the end, Monster Harvest is a game that succeeds in presenting a fresh idea but falls short of fully realizing its potential. It offers a pleasant and occasionally engaging experience, particularly in its early hours, but struggles to maintain momentum as its limitations become more apparent. For players who enjoy casual farming sims and are curious about its unique twist, it can still provide some enjoyment, though it may not leave a lasting impression once the novelty wears off. Rating: 6/10
Short but has some fun ideas I would've loved to see in a more fleshed out game.
It's boring
