Wow! I have never seen a game less deserving of the negative press it has received! Since I just finished 100%-ing it, let me break this down as best I can. Who this game IS NOT for: People who despise any David Cage game, the Life is Strange series, or anything made by Telltale Those who skip every cutscene in a game that does have a story Anyone looking for strong '90's nostalgia above all else Hardcore challenge seekers Who this game IS for: Those who like a heavily story-driven experience with light gameplay People who want to reminisce on their teenage experiences, warts and all Fans of "artsy" 3D animation like stop motion or the Spider-Verse films Late 20th century music nerds Mixtape is an interactive experience. It's more than a walking simulator as some have suggested, but it's also certainly not Doom or Mario where you can just ignore the story in favor of intense gameplay. It has its share of minor challenges, though, especially if you're looking to get all the achievements; and contrary to what some have said, there ARE fail states throughout the journey, but they aren't designed to be very punishing. Instead they're more of a nuisance/reward system for the various minigames that make up the journey. All in all, the gameplay isn't too deep but it is varied. Nothing overstays its welcome (not even the tongues) and you're likely to find at least one minigame that hooks you to the point where you spend way more time than intended just messing around like a kid on a summer's day. If you're looking for a game ABOUT the '90's this isn't quite it. Aside from some obligatory "Hey, do you remember X,Y,Z?" moments like rewinding a cassette tape with the (ERASER!?) end of a pencil, the '90's setting is less about nostalgia for the decade itself and more about capturing a time where electronics did not yet dominate every aspect of life. Sneaking off to a party in the woods, riding a skateboard, or just watching a sunset and fireworks are enjoyed to their fullest when the most encroaching pieces of tech on hand are a CD player and a crappy camera. This way, the game boils the few pieces of tech present down to things that actually enhance the human experience instead of replacing it. It's about living in the moment more than reliving any specific moment. This is a game that takes you by the hand and walks with you on an emotional journey where you experience what's it like to stand awkwardly between childhood and adulthood. There's a good chance you'll start out thinking each character is nothing more than a stereotype, maybe even annoying, but even if you weren't small-time delinquents like the three protagonists, by the end you will definitely find yourself relating to them on several levels. They can be both petty and emotionally intelligent, snobbish about their interests and yet genuinely nerding out at heart, and have such grand lust for life yet have only a budding understanding of how it works. It's a raw, if not artsy look at what it's like to be a teenager, and a (sometimes unflattering) mirror for the player as well. A genuine mixtape of memories. Oh, and yes, I paid for this game and get no kickbacks for my opinion. This sappy review is all me!

I feel like this get's some undeserved hate it's a nice game for those who grew up in the 90s

Amazing game, as a millennial this really took me back. First and foremost its a narrative game, its about how this makes you feel. I laughed, I cried, I cringed at the awkward moments. My heart lept at the plot twists. This is a game when you want to FEEL. I never had a delinquint or rebellious teenage lifestyle so playing this, kinda helped to allow me to experience that. If you want a good casual game to make you unwind or give you a brand new experince, this is the one.
