About
🎮 Game Overview
“Misty Onsen” is a first-person psychological horror game. You take on a job managing a hot spring deep in the mountains—an abandoned facility still overseen by the company. Your task is to perform daily inspections, but gradually you discover that the mountain hides unspeakable secrets, and horror and mystery are silently closing in.
📓 Memo: Work Rules (Must Be Followed)
Wear highly visible clothing.
Never deviate from the designated route.
If you hear a call, do not look back or respond.
There will be no women in this mountain—remember this.
If you smell something unusual, leave the area immediately.
📜 Deep Mountain Onsen Manager’s Handbook (Strictly Follow)
Besides bears, you must also beware of: armed strangers, hydrogen sulfide gas drifting through the mountains… and some things that simply cannot be explained. This mountain area is private company property. Any living intruders are illegal trespassers, generally categorized as:
Hunters with guns
People who got lost while gathering mountain herbs
Those intending to end their lives here
Criminals targeting women after hearing female voices
But all of these are still within the realm of humans.
The truly terrifying ones are something else entirely.
The company has hired several Shinto shrines to perform purification rituals—but none have worked. People say that once you “encounter” it, you don’t return. The previous manager disappeared this way, and no body was ever found.
Remember, if you hear a voice calling: “Hey—!”
Do not turn back. That is not human—it’s a bear mimicking sounds.
If someone calls your name: “Mr. ○○—!”
Think calmly—this is a forbidden area, the air there is toxic, and even birds won’t land—how could anyone be there? Escape immediately!
If you smell something strange, do not hesitate.
It could be toxic hydrogen sulfide, a bear or wild boar scent… or worse, the smell of a corpse.
Small animals’ screams sometimes sound like women screaming.
Many hikers have mistaken them for cries for help, strayed from the path, and never returned.
Please remember—
The most important rule when hiking is: never leave the route.

Run on the mountain trail and pick the right path while getting pulled into an eerie atmosphere, great visuals, and some decent unexplainable events. You have been hired as the caretaker of an isolated hot spring hidden deep within the mountains. Once a popular retreat, the spring has long been closed to the public, yet the company that owns it insists on keeping the area in decent condition. Your role is to maintain the site and ensure that, even though no visitors come anymore, the property remains presentable and functional. Despite being private land, however, it still draws occasional wanderers, like hunters tracking game, foragers seeking mushrooms, or curious hikers who stray too far from familiar trails. But the mountain holds something more mysterious. Rumors circulate about an unseen presence that seems to call out to people walking the mountain paths. Those who respond to this strange summons are said to vanish without a trace, never to be found again. Because of this, your employers have given you one very clear and serious instruction: never leave the marked path, no matter what happens, and ignore any sound that might seem to be calling your name. Armed with a flashlight, compass, and map, you step out onto the trail. Your duties are to check the sulfur levels in the hot spring, test the quality of the water, and inspect whether the pumps are still working. Despite the map and compass, navigation is simple. The route is essentially linear, and though you may occasionally encounter a fork in the trail, only one path truly leads forward. The other always hides some obstacle, forcing you to double back and take the correct route. What makes the experience unpredictable are the random events that occur along the way. These moments determine whether you’ll survive to reach the next checkpoint or meet an untimely end. Many of these encounters center around a terrifying female apparition. If you hear a voice calling out to you, your only safe response is to keep walking straight ahead without turning around. If the woman appears in front of you, your turn back and pick another path. This same rule applies to bears that roam the mountain. They, too, can mimic human sounds, luring you into making a fatal mistake. Poisonous gases present another threat. You carry a tool that can detect them before it’s too late, and while the gas doesn’t kill instantly, it slowly poisons you as the screen’s color changes. Sometimes, you’ll find yourself racing against time, either from toxic fumes or from something pursuing you in the dark, but the game rarely demands much thought. As you follow the mountain trail, you’ll encounter scattered items, such as an umbrella, a basketball, or a picture. Most have no direct impact on gameplay, but they deepen the sense of tragedy surrounding the mountain and its missing visitors. Notes, signs, and strange events are another detail. As you progress, these events grow increasingly bizarre. There are repetitions, but there are new things added each time you reach the next part of the trail. At certain spots, the next event is preset, but this is only meant to give you a bit more about the spooky trail. After surviving whatever the game throws at you, you will eventually reach a save spot. This means that you don’t have to beat the entire game in a single run. Fortunately, making a mistake or stumbling upon any of the game’s threats simply returns you back to the last save spot and lets you try again. However, the save system is not flawless. Occasionally, reloading from certain checkpoints leaves you unable to move or interact with anything. The only workaround is to load an earlier save and replay the section, hoping the issue doesn’t recur. Visually, the game is impressive. The dense forest trail, illuminated only by your flashlight, feels gloomy. Since the game takes place at night, you have to rely on a very good flashlight that lets you see a few meters ahead, but still obscures the distance to hide surprises. If you turn it off, you’ll be in complete darkness. Overall, the game is simple. You keep moving forward, turn back only when danger appears ahead, and survive long enough to reach the next safe point. There are no collectibles or secret areas to explore, and with the exception of one death event, which you will probably get anyway, all achievements can be unlocked in a single playthrough.
The Game is Really Good. The Negative writers HERE MY MESSAGE FOR YOU : under is in chinese Version "32 Yuan? Not worth it! The controls suck and the compass points nowhere!" Response: Come on. If you’re in a cursed Japanese mountain hot spring, the compass is the least of your problems. If you’re looking for accurate navigation — play Google Maps Simulator 2025, not Misty Onsen. This game isn’t about direction. It’s about survival, my friend. "I died on a mountain because I took the wrong path!" Response: That’s called realism! The game literally says: “Never leave the path.” And you’re like: “Hehe, what happens if I do?” Spoiler: You insulted the mountain. The mountain insulted you back. Deserved. "Someone called my name – I turned around – dead!" Response: It literally says in the game’s rules: “If you hear your name, don’t answer!” And what did you do? “Oh cool, someone wants to talk!” No, that’s not small talk — that’s a bear doing voice acting practice. That’s Method Acting: Survival Edition. "Too short, barely any puzzles, only 1 hour long!" Response: One hour of pure panic, Japanese whispering, and existential dread. What do you want — ten hours of that? Please, your nervous system needs a break. This game is saving you from yourself. ❤️ "Not scary, no atmosphere." Response: I start sweating when my character just breathes. The atmosphere is there — it’s just so quiet and toxic it eats you slowly while you think, “Huh, this isn’t so bad.” Then something in the fog calls your name. Scary enough now? "It’s just a copy of the demo!" Response: At least it copies itself and not P.T. like 90% of indie horror games. Someone actually tried to make a haunted onsen with workplace safety regulations scary — I respect that! Who needs story when you have “bear imitates human voice”? "Black screen after the update!" Response: That’s not a bug — that’s postmodern minimalism. The black screen represents the void consuming you for breaking company protocol. A feature, not a flaw. "Not recommended, not scary, no meaning!" Response: Exactly! That’s the point! A psychological horror succeeds when you end up saying: “I have no idea what just happened.” Mission accomplished.
Misty Onsen, developed and published by 神 SHEN, is a psychological horror experience that invites players into an isolated mountain setting where the beauty of nature conceals something deeply unsettling. The premise is deceptively simple: you are a new caretaker assigned to a remote hot spring resort, far from civilization, tasked with performing routine inspections and maintenance. Yet, as soon as you arrive, it becomes evident that this is no ordinary job. The previous caretaker has vanished without a trace, and the rules left behind to guide you—seemingly mundane at first—hint at a lurking danger that defies logic. The eerie list of instructions, such as not deviating from the designated path, never turning back when you hear a voice calling your name, and leaving immediately if you smell something strange, sets the tone for the rest of the game. What begins as a procedural assignment gradually transforms into a psychological ordeal in which every sound, shadow, and flicker of light could spell your doom. The world of Misty Onsen is defined by its atmosphere rather than its mechanics. There are no weapons to wield or enemies to fight in the traditional sense; survival depends entirely on observation, restraint, and intuition. The mist-covered forest trails, the creaking wooden floors of the onsen, and the soft trickle of water combine to create a deceptive calmness that keeps the player constantly on edge. The game’s design draws strength from its minimalism—every corner and corridor feels purposeful, every visual cue layered with potential meaning. The sound design is particularly effective, blending environmental ambience with sudden, unnatural distortions that evoke dread without resorting to cheap scares. The horror here is not about what leaps at you, but what watches you from behind the fog, what whispers your name when you know you are alone. It is the kind of slow-burn terror that relies on subtle cues and psychological unease, forcing players to confront their instincts and question their own senses. As you progress through the story, the rules of the mountain become more than simple guidelines—they are a psychological test. The warnings etched into memos feel like fragments of sanity left by those who came before you, and as you attempt to follow them, the tension between obedience and curiosity becomes unbearable. Do you trust the words on the page, or do you explore beyond their limits in search of truth? The game builds its suspense around these moral and instinctive dilemmas, creating a deeply personal kind of fear. The notion that “no women exist on this mountain” introduces a layer of mystery that is both surreal and terrifying, suggesting that something has warped the natural order of the place. Every action carries consequence, even if the results aren’t immediate, and the slow realization that you are being observed adds to the suffocating paranoia that defines the experience. Visually, Misty Onsen achieves an impressive balance between realism and dreamlike distortion. The dense mist is not just a graphical effect but a narrative device, cloaking the landscape in ambiguity and constantly reshaping your sense of direction. The environment is beautifully rendered, with meticulous attention to textures, lighting, and natural detail. The architecture of the onsen itself feels authentically Japanese—wooden corridors, sliding paper doors, stone baths, and lantern-lit pathways—but the quiet decay that has settled over everything transforms beauty into unease. The aesthetic choices make the game feel grounded in cultural familiarity while simultaneously alienating the player through dissonant imagery and unnatural silence. Every visual element reinforces the story’s themes of isolation, ritual, and decay, creating a cohesive atmosphere where horror feels organic rather than imposed. Technically, the game performs competently, though its demands on hardware are notable for an indie production. Misty Onsen requires a relatively modern system to run smoothly, especially if players wish to experience the full visual fidelity of its mist effects and lighting system. The game’s optimization is generally stable, though occasional frame drops or texture stutters may occur in heavier scenes. Its inclusion of multiple language options and full audio localization across seventeen languages is an impressive feat for a solo or small-team developer, showing an ambition to reach a global audience. While the controls are straightforward and the interface uncluttered, the lack of interactivity outside of exploration may leave action-oriented players unsatisfied. Yet, for those who appreciate environmental storytelling and psychological immersion, this restraint works in the game’s favor—it maintains focus and prevents distractions from the atmosphere it so carefully constructs. Where Misty Onsen falters slightly is in the pacing and narrative resolution. The story unfolds through discovery and implication rather than explicit exposition, which can feel unsatisfying for players seeking a more conventional plot structure. Much of the lore remains ambiguous, and while this mystery serves the tone, it can also make the ending feel abrupt or unresolved. Nevertheless, this ambiguity may be intentional—a reflection of the unknowable forces that dominate the mountain. The fragmented storytelling invites interpretation, leaving players to piece together meaning from small clues, documents, and the environment itself. It’s the type of game that lingers in the mind long after completion, prompting reflection on what truly happened, what was imagined, and what the mountain might represent. In the broader landscape of psychological horror games, Misty Onsen stands out for its restraint and its setting. By using a traditional onsen as the backdrop for supernatural terror, the developer subverts expectations—turning a place associated with peace, warmth, and healing into one of dread, uncertainty, and alienation. Its horror is steeped in cultural symbolism, evoking themes of purity, transgression, and the thin boundary between the spiritual and the physical. The result is a game that feels both intimate and vast, personal yet universal. While it may not appeal to those who crave fast-paced or heavily interactive experiences, it excels as an atmospheric, meditative descent into fear. Misty Onsen demonstrates how effective horror can be when it respects silence, ambiguity, and restraint, proving that what we don’t see—or choose not to see—can be far more terrifying than what we do. Rating: 6/10
cant figure out navigation using compass. repeating jumpscare makes it boring. but nice gameplay
