Mislight is a new indie platformer made by Etherlight, we would like to thank the developers for providing us with a copy of the game for reviewing purposes.

Introuduction
Mislight is a 2D platformer that comes packed with a lot of charm and I really enjoyed playing through the game. The details that the developers included are very good and the gameplay is really fun. I love how the game combines platforming and shooting mechanics that make it a very fun and enjoyable 2D platformer.
Pros and Cons
Pros

Very fun gameplay where you use a magical flashlight
Interesting upgrades for you to utilize to help with platforming
Nice cosmetics that reference other anime and games
Beautiful pixel art that is very nice and detailed
Cons
NPCs you meet in the game have no dialogue
Finding certain doors can be a bit difficult at times
In-game map is too small

Story
You play as a young girl who was having a peaceful night, when all of a sudden a being, known as The Forgotten, takes her soul into a forest where shadow creatures reside. The little girl finds a flashlight that has magic tied to it, allowing her to fire magic bullets to fight against them. She must find a way to escape or the shadows will take her soul. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2983781879 The story for the game is short and simple, it’s easy to follow and that is completely fine. Although I do have one thing I should bring up and that is the NPCs in the game do not speak. They just stand there; they all have names but they don’t muster out a single word when approaching them. Although this could be because they are technically supposed to be a special shout-out to people who are backers. There are a few story-based NPCs that the game has, yet they don't say anything either when they feel like they are saying something.
Gameplay
Mislight is a run-and-gun platformer where you can use a magic flashlight to shoot down enemies. Enemies will have a health bar, with each one having different amounts of health. You could of course get upgrades with the shards you collect and level up your character. You can increase the damage, the amount of fear you can take (which is your health), the number of shards you can get, an extra life that you can use if you run out of health, and light orbs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2983783962 There are also power-ups you can get after beating bosses, like a charge shot, and a magic ability to make certain switches go off. Or being able to push objects, move platforms, and jump off of mushrooms (which is my favorite part). Then there is the bubble shield, which I will into small detail in a bit. These abilities have a few uses and with them you can also backtrack to get collectibles, mainly notes though. These notes just give you lore but going around the map in the game is not too much of a chore so there is that. Plus, farming for shards does help in a few ways as getting upgrades is always good. Except I did not find much use in the bubble shield but that could be because of my skill in platformers and such. Overall, the gameplay for Mislight is very fun. I really like shooting down enemies and it reminds me of Megaman in a sense. You will also come across some boss fights and they were fun to fight as well. My favorite has to be the Grim Reaper one, it was my favorite boss design-wise as I liked the detail it had on it. Another thing I enjoyed about the game is the fact that it came with some nice anime-styled costumes for your character to equip. These costumes are references to other anime/games, you can get one that is a reference to Isabella from Animal Crossing, Junko Enoshima from Danganronpa, Monika from Doki Doki Literature Club, and more. I do have two issues with Mislight though, the first being that finding certain doors can be a bit of a problem. You will find switches around the game that open certain doors and it will show you what door opens but not the location of the opened door. The last issue I had is that the in-game map that the game has is a little small. I had no issues with looking at it - however, that’s not to say that other people won’t have issues when viewing it. I hope the developers make a patch to make it bigger or allow us to zoom in.
Graphics and Performance
Mislight has a very beautiful pixel art style that I enjoyed very much. I liked the dark theme it had going for it, it’s like you were actually walking in the woods at night. I tested the game on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor 3.50, and 16 GB of RAM, I experienced no issues while I was playing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2983781983
Final Verdict
All in all, Mislight is a very fun short indie platformer that I do think is worth playing. If you are already a fan of platformers, then it is definitely worth checking out. I really liked what the developers did in this game and the references to other anime and games are a very nice touch. It’s a simple game but in all honesty, that’s fine. Fun adventure/metroidvania with frustrating difficulty spikes that make this short game feel a lot longer. On the other hand, cool outfit system fixes a lot of issues. Because the intro doesn't give you much to chew on, the story is told as you play the game. Basically, you are a girl who falls asleep and is drawn into darkness by an evil dark thing that slithers into her room. Nothing will be explained to you directly because there are no text boxes or voices in this game. Thank goodness you have a diary that does that for you. If you want to know what's going on around you, you should read it every time the book icon appears. You can maybe ignore it and continue playing the game, but there is only so much you can pick up just by looking at the screen. The font used in the game's diary and letters could be better. Some letters look similar, making it difficult to read, especially for those unfamiliar with the language. If you read for longer periods, it can strain your eyes. The gameplay is enjoyable. The controls are simple, and no sophisticated movements are required. Aside from basic movement, the most often utilized buttons are jump and attack. A flashlight is your weapon of choice. Every time you press the button, it fires a beam of light. It doesn't cover the full screen, so you'll have to get closer to the enemy, but it's really useful. The flashlight gains experience points and grows more powerful by throwing light on opponents and killing them. Defeated foes also drop lightdrops, the game's money. Forest animals tainted by the darkness stand in your way. You will encounter frogs spitting at you, squirrels tossing nuts, and wasps stinging you. However, it appears that the game does not treat every living thing equally. Smaller creatures, such as frogs and bats, just explode in a dark cloud, whereas squirrels can be cleansed of the darkness and returned to their friendly form. Bosses are usually larger creatures. Because the game is short, there aren't many of them, but there is a difficulty spike here that is fairly surprising given how easily the common enemies can be wiped out. While bosses revealing different attacks during a battle is nothing new, in this game they transform into bullet hell fights that will kill even the most skilled players. But, as I sought to avoid every bullet, I discovered that success isn't dependent on any strategy. Smashing the button as fast as I could was enough. The reward for defeating a boss is an ability that allows you to go to the next zone. The world is small. There are five different zones that change the landscape slightly, although the overall aesthetic remains dark and cave-like throughout the game. Except for a few locations where an ability is required, all zones follow the same generic pattern of jumping on switches and looking for the newly opened door. The most of the zones are fine, but the final zone is just terrible. The main foe is a flying orb that shoots bullets all over the place. It hits you hard, yet you only deal minor damage. The only way to kill it without any hassle is to lure it to a healing point. Because you’re a little girl stuck in an unknown world, the usual health bar is replaced with fear. When it's full, you'll "die" and recover at the nearest save spot. You also lose money you had gathered since the last save. But it's not as bad as it sounds because there are plenty of healing lights and money. When you come close to bright lights, your fear vanishes. These can be lights scattered around the map or mushroom dwellings. These holes in trees serve a number of purposes. Besides healing and saving, you can also use them to teleport between all visited holes or enter a shop. The shop doesn't have much to offer. Half of the inventory consists of several healing lights and an item that serves as an extra life when you die. Because healing places are plentiful, you should save your money for permanent upgrades. These are available in three kinds and can make an already simple game much simpler. The first boosts your fear threshold, the second increases the number of lightdrops from defeated enemies, and the third increases the flashlight's damage. All three can be purchased several times, with each subsequent purchase being more expensive. Aside from lightdrops, the upgrade also takes a portion of the flashlight's experience points. This is usually worthwhile because even a level 1 flashlight with improved damage can kill basic opponents in a single hit. Unfortunately, these upgrades either add very little later in the game or there’s a threshold on how much damage you can deal to an enemy. My attacks kept doing the same tiny amount despite several upgrades to the lv.10 flashlight. The outfits, though, are perhaps the coolest thing. Each store has one or two that are little easter eggs for popular games. Besides changing the girl’s appearance, they also come with special modifiers that is switched on or off in the extras sections. Most of these perks fix a lot of issues, such as a more powerful light that makes the last part a lot easier.
Hay una rana tocando el banjo
This game isn't awful, but it feels amateurish. For the most part, it works and I did have fun, but it does a lot of things that make it hard to recommend. This game is structured like a metroidvania, 5 interconnected areas with powerups to find. However, the first two areas looked so similar, I couldn't tell if they were the same area or not. Everything was so similar, it became hard to find out where to go next. So I only got one powerup, a charged flashshot, before I decided I had enough. Also, minor things I want to say. -The only music in the game was the title and the shop music (which I admit, I really liked the shop music). However, the music on the map is white noise I didn't care for. So I'm prepared to say this game has 2 songs. - The game states that it's best to play with a controller and then teaches you to play with keyboard and mouse. I don't get it. - I couldn't the outfits in the shops. The space button wouldn't work. So it's bugged or I couldn't figure out how to buy it.
Creative gameplay and design; runs amazingly smooth on deck. SNES classic nostalgia with eerie environment and chilling atmosphere. Devs are super active and have done a great work here. Just starting out but recommend 💯 for deck gamers!
It's a really enjoyable adventure! The music is really good and gameplay is smooth. I really recomend this game!
I Don't Recommend This Game Gameplay: https://youtu.be/ydre6a7KTMU
Desde el primer momento que lo jugué me enganchó!! Es la primera vez que juego este modo de juego y me encantó. La música lo disfrute mucho y amé las referencias con las skins.
It's a cute, fun, SPOOKY platformer that's well written and has smooth controls. Definitely worth checking out!!!
Had a ton blast of fun playing Mislight! I was really drawn by the challenge and the overall setting, music, colors and mechanics of the game. Would only suggest to keep an eye on the tiles, sometimes they are difficult to read. P.D. I HATE HATE HATE THOSE SQUIRRELS!!!
