An overwhelmingly psychedelic puzzle game full of mirrors, over-saturated colors, and infinities.

:O This game is incredible! The things that are done with the camera and rendering are a ton of fun to explore and absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommended! 100% deserves the Excellence in Visual Art award that it received at the Independent Games Festival!
Wonderful. Difficult, beautiful, unlike anything else. Ray tracing needs a powerful GPU.
Worked hard to get the secret level. Then I saw the secret level. No thanks. Well, that's gaming for you. Anyway, it's a very cool game aside from that.

ME BRAIN ARGHHHAAAAGRAAAAGA
The colors and visuals and music are all beautiful; the puzzle mechanics are concise and inherently topological. Not a single piece of the package feels incongruent. It's a wonderful confluence of design and engineering.
One of those games where simple rules can add up to very tricky puzzles. It's vaguely similar to a "sliding blocks on ice" puzzle, but with magnets rather than pushing, and in three dimensions… Then, on top of that, the other challenge in each puzzle is that the environments are all incredibly reflective, turning each room into a hall of mirrors that it can be difficult to even visually parse until you've traveled around it enough to build up a mental map of the room's actual shape, figuring out what's real and what's just a reflection! Most of the puzzles I was eventually able to understand and reason out a solution to, although a couple of them never quite made sense to me and I wound up just solving by poking through the possibilities until things worked out. But, you're never rushed—nothing in the game ever relies on time, it sits and waits for you to analyse the environment and choose your next action. There is one final level that's unlocked for completing each level in a small enough number of clicks, but even then, you can take all the time you need between those clicks, making it a good game for people who don't like having their reflexes tested. (I've heard on the forums that some people have found alternate solutions that require rapid clicking, but these are optional and not the intended solutions, so you aren't missing out on anything by not playing that way.) Movement is of the no-such-thing-as-down variety, like a spaceship game, with six degrees of freedom, but personally I didn't struggle much with acclimating to it? The rooms all either have pretty obvious landmarks to orient yourself to, or else are symmetrical enough that your orientation is irrelevant anyway. It's the sort of thing that I could see causing someone motion sickness—particularly when the game plays with extreme-fisheye viewpoints, which do occasionally get VERY extreme—but personally, I'm fairly sensitive to motion sickness from games, and I had no trouble with this one at all. The fact that you're always in total control of your movement seems to help. The game is consistently as gorgeous as the screenshots suggest—maybe moreso in motion, as you're swooping through the environments at will. This comes at a cost in performance of course; I occasionally dropped to what felt like 15fps or lower on my GTX970, but again, this isn't the sort of game where that matters beyond the cosmetic experience of the shuddering. I did also have a fair amount of trouble with the game crashing and audio breaking up, but the game autosaves after each level, and while there are usually multiple goals to achieve before a level ends, for the most part it's easy to repeat a solution that you'd probably just done a few moments prior to the crash, once you've already figured it out. All that to say, this is a gorgeous puzzle game that strikes a nice balance with its difficulty!
Mirror Drop is awesome. If you are in two minds about getting this because you don't like puzzle games, get it anyway. I don't like puzzle games. The puzzles in this game are just as annoying as they are in every other puzzle game. But they are worth it for the environments. It is so cool to fly around inside these weird spaces that reflect out to infinity. There are a few points where you get into these unusual spots where you can fly into a tunnel in a straight line and then suddenly pop out behind where you started because space is curved. It's a total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it's awesome. I would have preferred if this game was a walking sim or just a general exploratory toy, but i can deal with a few puzzles for the neat visual effects. If you liked NaissanceE for the weird architecture (and not the jumping puzzles), then you will like this too. Grit your teeth through the puzzles and enjoy the show.
I usually only buy things on sale, but when I sorted my wish list and found this on top (with a reasonable price), I noticed after a few months that it never dropped. So there's your 70% of $8, and I have not been disappointed. This is EXACTLY the kind of colorful, chill, trippy, dimensional puzzle that tickles the fuzzy tummy of my brain. Ohhh yeah. That's the spot.
Makes the brain go all mushy, but in one of the best ways possible.
