mendel's garden is a charming voxel-based game about mixing plant seeds to come up with a specific combination necessary to unlock the next area. there's a story too, but no energy system, passing of time or any of the other nonsense many farming games force on players. unfortunately, only 1 of the 4 planned locations got finished before the game was pulled from sale, and it would've needed a lot of polish to make it less frustrating to play (better fast travel, much better movement, etc.) but that's what the early access period was supposed to achieve, and I'm sure it would've turned out fine, just like the developer's other titles.
As a biologist, I was frustrated by this game. I was excited when I started it because I love genetics-based games like Niche. I could not make sense of the Mendelian aspect of this game. Crossing plants did not produce the Mendelian ratios you'd expect in nature. That's fine if the creators didn't want the breeding to work out that way. But calling the game "Mendel's Garden" is misleading. I understand that the game is still in early-access, but the buggy-ness of it made it really frustrating to just play the game. Moving around through the different parts of the garden is cumbersome and the the quick travel is not as useful as it could be. I do like the story though and the plants have really neat designs.

I played through the currently available material (as of Nov 2019) in an afternoon. It took me about 3.5 hours and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love plants, and I'm always looking for games that include plants in a fun and interesting way. I also like science, so buying this felt like a pretty obvious choice for me. It was definitely worth $4 and I eagerly look forward to the additional content that will be added as development continues. The puzzles were fun and challenging enough, never frustrating or annoying. A little further in, it took some experimentation to figure out exactly how to proceed, which I like in a "research"-type game. There is a backstory to the puzzle-solving that takes a bit of a dark turn--I won't give any spoilers! The story was nothing really new or innovative, just another take on a classic trope, but I don't consider that a bad thing and I liked it well enough. There is a bit of inventory management involved as well, as you have a limited number of slots available to carry things--but if you're not a hoarder like I am, it probably won't be an issue for you. I will note that the music sometimes didn't work for me, but I was playing it on an older Macbook at the time since my PC laptop was out of commission, so that may have been due to my computer rather than the game itself. The game could probably use a bit more in the way of a tutorial or instructions at the beginning, but I was able to figure out everything I needed to complete the first level. Overall I recommend this game if you like plants or puzzles or both.
Saw this game on the New Releases page, and it screamed my name so loudly I had to take a closer look. 2 hours later, I had finished the first campaign- now on to waiting for the next one! This game returns to your high school biology class, taking a closer look at Mendelian inheritance and Punnett Squares. In the first campaign 'Garden of Eden', you play as a wizard (?) named Mendel, tasked with getting to the center of the garden for the Elixer of Life. However, the way to the center is blocked by many gates locked with produce requirements. It is your job to breed the correct plants in order to get something new, like pink sap. These gates often open up new plants to breed with, which are used for new gates, rinse and repeat. As of writing this review, the game has been out for 4 days and is still a little buggy and missing a texture or two, and while annoying, don't make the game unplayable. I have high hopes these issues will be fixed soon! All in all, great relaxing game for those interested in plants, genetics, or just puzzles at all! :)
It is a very fun game, I recommend it if you like Mendel and his study of pea's...just without peas.
Fun game, played the first portion that is available in early access, it has a self contained story arc and some great variety of plants to play around with. It is more of a puzzle game than a farming game, you are trying to find the right combinations to breed new plants and progress to new areas. If you like the idea of breeding plants you'll probably enjoy it.
I've really enjoyed this game, it has a fantastic story line that made me want to keep going until I knew the ending. For an early access game this one is amazing, easy to understand, easy and fun to play with very few issues so far. There is a slight scrolling issue in the letters lying around and I couldn't move backward from the last map but I figured out there was a fast travel method when you used the maps scattered around. Overall this game was really fun and the first story line only took me under 2 and a half hours to finish. I had a great time and I can't wait for the next update.
I love this game. It's cute, it's funny, it's relaxing, it's a great idea. I want more games like this.
