Has a very steep learning curve. Be sure to check out the controls in the menu first. Very fast. Very fun.
Good concept, good presentation, bad implementation. Mechrunner is a rail-shooter/runner game that entails driving a robot/tank transformer through various locations while shooting at various stuff. When you have a game built around a fast paced gameplay, such in the runner genre, you expect controls to be simple and/or flow easily. The controls in this are a mess. While you can rebind then, it doesn't solve the underlying issue of them just being awkward. Such as, having to constantly mash the shooting buttons to fire, you can't just hold down the trigger, because that gives you a charged shot that isn't nearly as effective as just rapid firing. Which, the rapid firing then results in not being able to play longer than a few minutes because you're just going to cramp your fingers by repeatedly trying to shoot while also moving at high speed trying to dodge stuff. Map designs are mostly decent to look at and decently well designed, except that the hit boxes on mech when trying to dodge around objects seem massive, because while the sprite may appear to not be in the way, you end up hitting it anyway. Never mind that you'll have a literal wall fall across the entire roadway leaving you no choice but to take damage since you can't jump over, only dodge left/right. Plus, you have items and enemies, literally spawning inside/on-top-of obstacles with no way to reach them. Which, in the case of an enemy, if they're in it, they can't move and you can't hit them. And since it's a rail shooter, you can't progress until it dies, which can ruin an otherwise great run because it leaves you no choice but to quit the session or hope 1 of the enemy shots can hit you so you can die and keep whatever you earned on that run. To add to that, it's not well optimized for PC, or multiple screens for that matter. If you're using a keyboard and mouse, the mouse is not locked to the app even in full screen, so, namely in robot mode, you end up moving off screen and randomly clicking other things because you're still trying to shoot at the same time. And if you happen to want to use a gamepad, the game will still only present the controls to you for the keyboard leaving you to manually keep looking up the controls to figure out what they are. There are also a number of different weapons you can equip which you can individually upgrade, but the different weapons are more just replacements rather than alternatives and the individual upgrades barely make a difference, so you end up only just saving up to buy the highest end weapon for each slot and then just individually upgrade those, which take forever because they're also level locked as well as cash locked. Achievements are straight up broken. They will work for the 'medals' in-game, but Steam Achievements will not unlock as it seems they were never properly implemented when released, so expect to see a big fat 0% next to the game no matter how much you play it. With all this said, while the game looks cool, there are just too many problems to give it a positive recommendation. Considering the developer barely scraped by on the game's kickstarter with multiple delays and cancellations on certain promises, it's not surprising that this turned out as bad as it did.
Seems to be good idea with bad execution.
Controls are wonky, gameplay is confusing and aggravating, feels like a freemium game except I don't see any way to buy the currency with dollars.
Great game!
Tedious, Uninspired, Repetitive and Dull
I'd have thought a mecha game would be harder for me to despise this much but nope, in that at least MechRunner is an inspiration. An endless runner game with only a single map combined with a horrendously grindy progression system and almost non-existent melee combat (seriously, what was even the point of including it?) makes this a most definitive de-rec from me. And just in case you are thinking about sticking with it, hoping it gets good after a few upgrades (weapons/map areas) well, trust me - it doesn't. Please, please don't play this. For your sake... and mine. P.S. Also, may I ask for a refund of my 4 hours?
