Match It!

Match It! is a free VR game where you match like numbers or colors. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has 4 open steam achievements. It needs some instructions on the options lobby. Has three modes of play and changes you can make to increase the level of difficulty. Has a leader board for each mode of play. Needs a music mute or volume control, but the music sound track was ok. Try it, you might like it.

Match It! seems more like a tech demo than a serious game, due to the severely shallow gameplay. It's a VR exclusive 3D tile matcher where you must match idential hexagonal tiles to "eliminate" them and see if you can get a nice high score. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The untextured simple polygons in the game aren't going to appeal to most gamers from a visual perspective. This seems to have been made a VR exclusive to prevent any comparison with non-VR 3D games, a comparison that this game would fail very badly at. Developers must learn that while VR is great, if the only thing that makes the game great is the VR, then the game isn't great at all. The game is completely free. This is noble a gesture that shows dedication to both gamers, and the gaming industry. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality compromises.
