It is broken, unbalanced, and archaic, yet remains infinitely more charming than its balanced modern descendants. Play it to see where the genre peaked in 1994.
Who Is This For?
Genre historians, min-maxers who love exploiting systems, and anyone who thinks "balance" is a dirty word.
Who Is This Not For?
Those who require tooltips, modern UI scaling, or a tutorial to explain why a rat just ate their settler.
This is not a game about fairness. It is a game about becoming a god and crushing ants.

The Breakdown

[th]What We Loved[/th] [th]The Reality Check[/th]

Absolute Freedom. Modern games restrict you for "balance." MoM lets you cast high-tier spells on turn 10 if you build for it. It respects your intelligence enough to let you break it. The UI is a relic. There are no tooltips explaining complex mechanics, keyboard shortcuts are non-negotiable, and unit management can feel like filing taxes in 1994.

[th]The Goal[/th] [th]Complexity[/th]

Total Domination. You aren't just managing a kingdom; you are researching the spells to crack the world in half. The goal is to make your wizard so powerful that armies become irrelevant. Deceptively Deep. The interplay between 14 races, 5 magic realms, and randomized spell research creates a "just one more turn" loop that rivals Civilization.

[th]Core Tone[/th] [th]Genre Context[/th]

Pixelated High Fantasy (VGA Era) Age of Wonders, Endless Legend

[th]Technical Snapshot[/th] [th]Completion Time[/th]

Stable DOSBox Emulation Infinite (Sandbox)

Main Review
Master of Magic is the academic text on how to design a fantasy power fantasy. Unlike modern strategy games that obsession over esports-level balance, this title understands that the fun of playing a wizard lies in unfair advantages. The core loop revolves around the customization of your spellbook; you can be a jack-of-all-trades with a diverse portfolio, or you can dump all your points into Death magic, start the game with wraiths, and terrorize the map before your opponents invent basic masonry. It is a sandbox of systems designed to be exploited, rewarding system mastery with spectacularly broken outcomes. The strategic layer is bifurcated into two distinct planes of existence, Arcanus and Myrror, a mechanic that remains impressive thirty years later. You aren't just pushing sprites across a grid; you are managing a trans-dimensional economy where resources and races differ wildly between worlds. Tactical combat serves as the execution method for your grand strategy, where a single well-placed "Cracks Call" or a buffed hero unit can decimate entire armies. The "verb" here is optimization; you are constantly tweaking your empire to feed the mana hunger of your increasingly absurd spells. However, one cannot ignore the dust on the cover. This is a DOS application running in a wrapper, and it screams 1994. The interface fights you. Information is often hidden behind archaic menus or simply not explained at all, requiring you to consult external wikis or the manual to understand why your units are revolting. While a modern remake exists (and arguably handles the UI better), it often lacks the raw, soulful "jank" that gives the classic its personality. Note that the "Caster of Magic" DLC/Mod is essentially mandatory for veterans, acting as a massive community patch that fixes the AI without sanitizing the fun. Ultimately, Master of Magic Classic is a mandatory history lesson. It proves that graphic fidelity and streamlined user experience are secondary to strong, interlocking systems and player agency. It costs less than a cup of coffee and offers more depth than $70 AAA titles. If you can tolerate the friction of the interface, you will find the blueprint for every fantasy 4X game you have ever loved, still beating with a chaotic, magical heart.
I think the original game, without the later updates, was better, but my memory of it could be bad as I played that 25 years ago. I dont remember the computer coming to attack your home city so fast with high level units. I have been attacked by computer players using advanced calvary units before I have my first building built. I cant find my original CD though(assuming I had it on CD, I am worried I had it on floppy disks) so this will have to do. Still a great overall game, even though it seems to go that I die in the first 100 turns getting attacked by computer players that could not possibly have the troops they have, or I play against a computer that seems incapable of fighting back, there is no middle ground
Honestly, this is one of the best games ever made .... E A S I L Y. It is so fun. Imagine being a super-cool wizard and commanding troops and casting spells. It feels like an interactive version of DnD combined with Master of Orion and Lord of the Rings all mixed into a super-fun game. The lack of a story-driven campaign isn't a negative, it's a positive. You can create amazing stories in your mind while you play and it truly has the potential to help someone learn about the basics of graph theory if they play on impossible setting (ask me if you have questions regarding graph theory).
DLC - Caster of Magic for Windows - это самая лучшая версия игры, с переработанным интерфейсом и функционирующая на современных системах. Ну и вот. Любите глобальные стратегии в фентезийных декорациях и не шугаетесь архаичной графики? Берёте MoM Classic и дополнение Caster of Magic for Windows и наслаждаетесь. Стоит это всё копейки, а со скидками так даже меньше чем копейки, хотя куда ещё. Отличная игра!
25+ years later, still my favorite PC game.
Unlike the remake, the original's AI is brutal, likely to rek you without mercy even on "Normal". Don't go for larger world sizess: allows the AI players growing stronger to apocalyptic proportions while you drown yourself in micro-management. The UI is a product of its era (read: it sucks by modern standards). And if AI knows any one-hit-kill spells it *will* use them on your best heroes! They give you NO QUARTER!
I'm a wizza with a bounty on my head
Still the best 4X Fantasy Turn Based game out there. Ultimate customization for your wizard. Combined with race selection it really opens up to offer countless builds and play styles. Is the base game balanced? Hell no. But that's part of the fun. But then if you factor in the Caster Of Magic Fan "remake" DLC. That DLC has a complete rebalance of game, including spells. And adds a bunch of stuff like modifiers that you can apply to the game to really make it your own. A true treat for any 4X players that are looking for a deep fantasy setting to dive into. Don't be fooled by the play time. I bought it on release at my local computer shop. And I used to go bed reading the and handbook and spellbook. I easily have 1000 hours of playtime across the ~20 years I've been playing it.
The original Master Of Magic is easily one of my favorite games of all time. But oh boy is it a hot buggy mess and how. There's an entire college thesis worth of complaints on how the original is broken so I'll spare you. This remaster adds some much needed bug fixes and then some. However instead of just stopping at some mandatory tweaks and a few quality of life improvements this game decided to frantically throw everything off the table, dump several suitcases full of cocaine and meth and snort all of it with glee. Everything is bigger and more, the game hits you faster and harder than ever, monsters are more overpowered, wizards are more insane. Even on the lowest difficulty the game will spawn multiple high level dungeons with multiple legendary creatures right next to your starting city and expect you to deal with it. It's a remaster made by and for absolute psychopaths. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2932407155
Still as awesome as I remember. Thankfully I don't have to exit Windows 3.1 to DOS to launch it anymore.
