Mark of the Ninja

A remarkable game! Mark of the Ninja is quite the enjoyable 2D stealth game, with a precise gameplay that allows the player to complete missions in various ways. The experience is highly replayable and it offers quite a good balanced level of challenge. The story is well made, perhaps a bit generic but it suits the adventure nicely. What is indeed memorable is the game's art direction, a mix between a comic book and Japanese ink paintings. Overall Mark of the Ninja is an enjoyable game, an Xbox Live Arcade title that, well, left its mark in the gaming scene!

So, I bought Mark of the Ninja many years ago when I thought I enjoyed stealth games; playing it now, I'm confirming why I've since decided that I don't enjoy stealth games. Honestly, the game seems....fine, it's just really not for me. If you're a big fan of stealth games, looking at other reviews, this is probably a must play for you. If you're not into stealth games, this is absolutely not going to change your mind or stand out for you. Like most games of its type, Mark of the Ninja is extremely tedious. The fluidity of its movement is constantly interrupted by being forced to stop and wait for patrols or lasers or some other such. It sort of reminds me of the early Sonic titles in that way - the most fun way to play is constantly punished. Since it's scoring my run, it's clear the game really wants you to replay every mission, memorize them, and then the game will shine, but I really don't have the time to do that, so instead I get this really awkward, stilted experience. The story seems super weak from the get go, the art style is kind of ugly if you ask me, the QTEs to perform a kill are annoying, being unable to fight back when spotted is ridiculous, the level design is super misleading sometimes, most interactions are either too apparent or not apparent enough, and the AI is super inconsistent, etc. etc. I think I've made my point. Clearly I'm in the minority on this one, but this game is anti-fun.

If you ask me what I was doiing this day in 1986, I was probably sitting on a couch somewhere smoking weed and playing video games. So now, when I am sitting on the couch smoking weed and playing video games, this is a fantastic time killer. A nice reminder that side-scroller's can be a blast!
