Marimoth is a 2D retro pixel ripoff of Galaga, but featuring worse graphics and a 2D monochrome "moth" theme. How this was intended to improve on the original Galaga game from Namco in 1981 is unclear. The technical implementation here is a farce, with locked controls and resolution, 2D only graphics, and a locked 4:3 aspect ratio, much like televisions from the 1950's. The developers were simply incapable of making the game work in 16:9 resolution. For background information, Marimoth was released on Steam as a $2 paid product in 2021, some 40 (FOURTY) years after the release of Galaga, despite being a worse product. Galaga, by comparison, is superior, free, and can be played easily in a web browser. I think this stands as a ringing indictment on the absolute blight that amateur "indie" game developers are and the negative impact they have on gaming in general. Due to the terribly poor quality of this product, I cannot recommend it.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The first thing the developer wants everyone to know is that they are THE MAIN CHARACTER. You, as a gamer, don't matter. They breach Valve guidelines for developers just to complain about a fully accurate and informative review (with facts their ego doesn't like). It's evident from their attitude that they never created this product with gamers in mind. They did so to stroke their own ego. When developers, especially failed ones who would never be able to get a professional job in the industry, put themselves before gamers, we end up with garbage products like this. That explains how this trash ended up on Steam, but it doesn't excuse it. At least we finally got to meet THE MAIN CHARACTER. If the developer of this trashware wasn't so full of themselves, they might understand that game reviews aren't here to instruct and teach developers how to make games. They should know this before they publish badly made garbage on Steam that nobody wants. Game reviews are here to inform gamers about which products are of high quality, professionally made, and worth spending their hard earned money on. But the developer is so arrogant, it's all about them, so what's good for gamers is something that never crossed their mind. The developer makes the rather serious claim that my review is inaccurate/contains information which isn't factually evident. In their words, "based on false assumptions". But this simply isn't true... the facts of my review can easily be verified with just a glance at this godawfully crap product. We know that if there was any glaring inaccuracy in my review the developer would have jumped on them and pointed them out right away... but they can't even cite one single example. Because they know my review is accurate. They just don't like being presented with the facts. So they make up these false accusations of inaccuracy to soothe their ego. Anything but facing up to the truth. But why is this intellectual dishonesty good for gamers? It isn't. Weirdly, the developer uses their breach of Valve guidelines in this pointless response to heavily advertise their Youtube channel (Don't bother liking or subscribing, it's garbage, the guy has no followers, just like his crap games)... you can see their presence on Steam has nothing to do with gamers and everything to do with being a marketing exercise. When developers put themselves before gamers and before the gaming industry, this is the kind of disservice to gamers that we see. Since this was one of my much older reviews, I decided to check and see if this garbage had suddenly become popular with gamers (after all, THE MAIN CHARACTER couldn't be an utter failure at game development... could he??). No surprises, the peak player count for this garbage is TWO PLAYERS. That's it. With over 120,000,000 gamers on Steam, to only manage to attract enough attention to get two players at the same time is far below what you would even expect from a complete random sample. Gamers were actively repelled by how bad this game is. But the developer wants you to subscribe to his Youtube channel to learn... what? How to be the worst game developer in human history? What a joke. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.
I wanted to take the time to review this game since it doesn't have that much coverage, and I personally enjoyed my time playing. Marimoth is a Galaga-style bullet hell that runs for about 5 levels and 5 bosses, with 3 powerups and 1-2 potential revives. It's really fun! It's simple and easy to understand, there's the constant tug of war between wanting to dive for coins and dodging bullets, as one who doesn't typically play these kinds of games, I was pleasantly surprised. I also took the time to earn and complete the secret level, which was a great challenge that put my skills to the test. In order to get to the secret level you have to
play levels 1-4 without getting hit
. I had to change my entire play-style to adapt to this. I would precisely shoot down enemies in the first stage to farm for coins, hoping to earn an upgrade per level in order to focus solely on dodging by the fourth stage. Although, thank god you don't have to flawless the fifth stage- cause it highlights a couple of my main gripes with the game. Some things are just impossible to dodge lol. There are enemies that move/shoot almost completely horizontal, forcing you into a corner where you can be easily targeted by any of the homing units or overwhelmed by any of the spread shot ones. My other gripes are little things like problems with visual clarity, coins flying all the way across the screen so you can't catch them, or that tabbing in and out is a little bit finicky. But other than that, solid game.
Vertical gallery shooter with original shot and powerup system. Cute, simple graphics. Beautiful soundtrack. Movement is a tad slow and there is no auto fire. Some unavoidable shots from behind. Pretty chillaxing fun game but don't expect any checkpoints or saves!
If you enjoy pain and torture, this game is highly recommended for you. but if you want to play game that give pain, torture and fun, try souls-like games. the music is okay tho.
A fairly decent space invaders style shooter but with a cute moth who shoots... uh... moth balls???? It's not a bad deal even at full price. The music is also very cute and relaxing.
