love the game, very chill, pick up and go
i really gave the game a chance because roguelike waifu VS-like games are generally fun. but this one just wasn't. it's more emphasis on story than anything else. but at that point just invest in a visual novel. i generally don't care for fan service. but normally the gameplay is priority over it in games that have it. but with this game it feels invasive. when you get damaged a certain amount (mainly by zombies dropping from the sky, directly on top of you) you just get this big interruption of the action for a fan service jpeg. normally games with this type of function just show it off to the side without gameplay interruption. the vaccine thing is just more tedious than anything. from a gameplay perspective it's just a waste of time. you could definitely just add the pic to the story and show the maids getting cured via story rather than this mini game. because it's not really fun at all. and finally the gameplay issues. This game does the thing that is the biggest problem with some games of this genre. it's just a stat check game. do a mission. spend currency on upgrades. you don't need to spend it on anything else because it's irrelevant compared to the upgrades for your character's weapons. i haven't died at all playing this game and all i'm doing is spamming upgrades on my character's weapon, and that's it. not buying any items or materials because i get enough per run that there's no need. and as i said before, the accessory items just have near zero enough impact. for a roguelike this is what separates good ones from the mediocre. there are not enough versatile upgrades that make me look forward to going back into a run. because every run is the same. no enemy variety. even with the bosses. they all do the same thing. Sure the presentation of this game is awesome. which is likely what gets people to buy it. But it is severely lacking in substance. and it's a shame that i really committed expecting the game to open up and expand past the 2 hour mark. because i'd definitely have refunded otherwise. This game is closer to maybe a $3-$5 area. because there's just very little gameplay. if the game was marketed as a visual novel with some gameplay elements then expectations would be more realistic.
EN Review of Maid of the Dead Welcome to the zombie apocalypse maid café. Here, we have five maids with completely different styles and specialties—or, more accurately, weapons—ready to offer our dear zombie guests a very special kind of “rebirth service.” Now, please join us together— Moe, moe, kyun! The story begins when a zombie outbreak suddenly erupts one day. The protagonists, who originally work at a maid café, are rescued and taken in by the scientist Kanon after the incident. They soon discover that, as immune individuals, they can help develop a vaccine to treat humans who have been partially zombified. From there, the story begins to unfold. As the plot progresses, players will rescue additional characters, which expands the gameplay style and adds more variety to the experience. At the same time, the game gradually reveals each character’s personal story, as well as the truth behind the entire incident. In terms of gameplay, Maid of the Dead follows the now-familiar Vampire Survivors-style survival action formula. Players progress through stages by surviving waves of enemies, strengthening their characters, and pushing the story forward. Completing certain objectives also unlocks short side stories, allowing players to better understand the relationships between the characters while expanding the game’s worldbuilding. That said, the game definitely has its flaws. Skill balance is uneven, with some abilities and characters feeling noticeably more useful than others. The difficulty curve also becomes unstable in later stages. Some challenge missions, in particular, feel less like fair tests of skill and more like the game is simply trying to make things unnecessarily frustrating. Still, as a small-scale title with cute girls, zombie-slaying action, and enough content to kill some time, its flaws may depend on what each player expects from it. As long as you are not looking for a highly polished, deeply refined, or mechanically rigorous experience, the game can still offer a reasonably light and entertaining ride. On a ten-point scale, I would give it a 6.1. It is fine for killing time, enjoying some cute characters, and experiencing the absurd charm of a zombie apocalypse maid café. Just do not expect too much from its overall level of polish.
The game is nice if you like Vampire Survivors style games. It's an ecchi, so the CGI isn't anything exciting.
100% finished the game, so before you drop any substantial sum for this game- But first, tl:dr - buy only if you're here for the fanservice. It helps to remember that qureate made this game. They're known for visual novels and spicy fanservice, not making rogue-likes. The game element is very bare bones so if you're looking for a polished rogue-like a la Vampire Survivors or Holocure, this is not it. (mild spoilers ahead) Given that there is a simple storyline, the gameplay becomes linear. Find your best maid of choice, and stick with her till the end.
Once you finish the main plot, you be able to farm points for spending and power up your maids to oblivion, if you still have cause to 100% clear it.
Pros: -The gameplay is not buggy, which is a considerable plus even if the gameplay loop is simple. -Surprisingly, this game puts the points earned to good use even after the end, a sort of gold sink.
But you'll have to decide if it's worth it even after completion as its purpose is nulled for the survival challenge.
Cons: -Riddled with occasional spelling errors and a painful lack of description and information in item statistics. (don't worry - not enough to cripple your ability to play) -Gameplay is repetitive and enemies are simple with no variation. All they do is increase in HP and waves. Only the final boss presents a bit of a challenge in variation. -There are no universal passives to upgrade, leaving all maids with only baseline, individual stats to upgrade. -There are no universal upgrades that benefit all weapons/abilities etc. You will play with somewhat dysfunctional builds most of the time. -Heavily weapon/item reliant gameplay. Each maid's main weapon is not truly designed to handle combat by itself. -
There is a short segment around after 60% game where the first maid Nagisa is taken out of action - if you invested heavily into her, be prepared for a momentary farming fest to build up a secondary maid to get through.
If you can stomach the massive cons of playing the rogue-like element, go for it. Do it for the fanservice.
Pretty decent little Vampire Survivors-like. There's not been a single entry into the news tab in over a year, so I guess they're just leaving in all the bugs and lack of polish though. Kind of a shame to dump this on Steam and then just walk away. At it's core, it does fulfill it's promises, but there is so much room for improvement. The aura radius damage barely works for one example, and it'll never get fixed. I'd say wait for it to go on a mega-sale like I did before purchasing.
