I like the concept, I *want* to like this game, and I played the demo when it was up and then bought it on launch. But this is a very, very basic and unbalanced game. This is my Day 1 review of frustration. One major issue with the game is magic points/mana. I have no idea what magic potion recipes are, and you only get a couple early on, with no way that I can see to get more. There are lots of food recipes, and a "free crafting" mode, but you have to use the exact recipes to craft food, adding anything more to a real recipe, even one extra egg, creates a health potion instead. There are tons of health potion recipes, and tons of "Unknown Food" recipes, which are basically failures. No sign of mana potion recipes though. And all the chests you get from redoing earlier levels all seem to give health potions or money too, not mana, until I think Chest 3 of Ruins Forest Center, which itself is not really a soloable zone without mana potions. Addendum: There is one thing I didn't realise but that they do passingly tell you early on, which is that eating food does restore 1000 power or so each. That actually negates a fair amount of the mana issues. It doesn't negate the overall jankiness of the game though. It's also incredibly easy to miss that mechanic. Cooking is weird and buggy and unbalanced. Some examples of health potion recipes are: 5 liquid + 1 egg/meat or 2 rice/vegetable = health pot. 5 liquid + 1 Unknown Food = health pot too, which is weird. And any higher quantities of items make 1 health pot too. Like 10 liquid, 10 rice, 10 eggs? 1 health pot. 5 liquid + 1 rice/veggie usually fails for me and gave me an Unknown Food, but occasionally I get a weird "Production failed" message that disabled the entire cooking pot UI until I went to the night market and came back. After that point, 5 liquid and 1 rice started giving me health pots too until the next campfire, then it started giving Unknown Food again. I've gotten the weird "Production Failed" on various freestyle recipes, rarely. What does it mean? Who knows. It's not like there's any sort of success chance shown. And you don't even lose the ingredients when this happens anyway, I believe. The second problem with the game is that it's too chaotic to click on your towers and repair them when the train is moving. You can't pause to select a train carriage and repair it, for some reason. I've lost count of how many times I've either lost a tower because I can't click on it in the mass of monsters around it, or I accidentally sell the carriage instead of hit repair since the buttons appear in a wheel around the train. There's a lot of better ways this could have been done, but it's pretty awful right now. Due to that, the optimal strategy seems to be to stop the train at the start of a zone, so you're not wasting mana on movement (WHY does movement require mana?), and not adding to the chaos of trying to repair every carriage at once, and fight the enemies from there, forcing the enemies to come to you. Have one wood collector and one stone collector right at the very back, and put various attack towers in front. In fact, you should fill your train with wood and stone collectors at the very start and idle before the first gate to build up some resources and then demolish all except the two back ones, then upgrade the train a bit before moving past the first gate. Why not? But it's such a boring way to play. If you pause the train right at the start of a zone, and slowly inch forward until your engine is on the circular road and the zone fight starts, you can actually have your carriages safely outside or just inside the zone (and thus not really being attacked) while your engine carriage tanks most things. Health pots only affect your engine and not the rest of the carriages for some reason anyway, so even though this is a "mobile train" bullet heaven game, it seems better to not be mobile at all. Funnily enough, once you beat a stage, and the rest of your train then enters the stage, you might get a brief error message that says that the fight won't start until the entire train has entered the zone. You know, the fight you just beat. Once I figured this and the food = mana thing out, I was able to progress anyway, but it's so very weird and not the way the game is meant to be played at all, is it now? I have many other minor complaints with the game too. For example: - You can only do one night market run (to get money) per "night", but when you fail a run it doesn't actually start a new day, so you lose resources to repair the train and to add salt to the wound you don't get a way to top up your money from the market to buy more upgrades/useless recipes with until you go run a lower level run to move the clock. And there is only one level you can repeat (early on) for resources or to move the clock, which is Forest Center, since the map after that is too long to repeat without magic potions or food. - You cannot move the map (edit: there's a keybind to disable the map being centered on the train, and they never explain this), but there are many map angles where the last carriage of even a 5-carriage train is outside of the screen so you cannot easily click on it to repair it, or see what enemies are attacking it, without relocating the train to another location with a different camera angle first. - The 3rd achievement about omelette rice seems to be bugged for me. I've cooked around 20 of them without the achievement popping. - Recipes in general, available from the Wisdom Statue in the game, are useless, but as they don't show you the dish ingredients until you buy them, and they cost the same as a skill upgrade or new tower, you don't know that you can't make them until you actually buy them. They seem to say that you can also learn the recipes by actually making the foods itself. But the recipes have utterly random amounts of ingredients needed. And you need *exactly* the correct number of ingredients to make the dish. You'll never discover them via "free style" cooking without checking a guide. You unlock these over time anyway though, I think, so they're pointless to buy. But you have the option to do so, for no good reason. - I believe that buying new towers from the Wisdom Statue also seems pointless because you seem to unlock them over time from killing the bosses anyway. But again, nothing telling you that recipes and towers are very bad to buy and to just save money for the upgrades and larger food stalls. - When you're on the pause screen, your collectors still continue collecting resources. Low on resources to repair your carriage mid-combat? Just pause the game and wait (assuming you have at least one of each collector). However, mana does not regenerate, and the game force-pauses you when you tab out, so if you're trying to idle for power, well, you can't. Also there are at least 4 different names for the game: MagicCar of Delicious Gourmet Food Wizard Master of Taste Make up your mind. The devs also don't seem to be on the forums at all, and they set a release date and then blew by it without saying why before releasing it about 24 hours later with no explanation or acknowledgement whatsoever. They also have a package with another game included (the Kill Time Tower Defense one) which is cheaper than actually buying the base game alone, and that is very weird. And lastly for now, this game suffers from poor translations and localization issues like randomly untranslated text boxes, full-width apostrophes, words that overflow their text boxes, missing spaces between words, the usual Asian Jank. Heck, the very first NPC that talks to you gives your quest objective in Chinese instead of English (although the objectives box then shows you the objective in English). I can read Chinese anyway so it doesn't personally bother me, but it doesn't sell your game. This was a very, very poor effort.
Magicar of Delicious 4/5 I bought this game because I love shop sims are there are simply not enough, yet each one brings their own twist. This one does a decent job of presenting my two of my favorite genres. Tutorial is great, some of the text is no in english but then afterwards there is a tutorial style pop up with good written and visual instructions of what the game is trying to teach you. Achievements are unforntunately not in English at the moment. You start as a car on a track, you typically just go around in a circle. I've only played the early levels but there is no opportunity to redirect the cart even though this is a mechanic in the game where you can actually navigate a fork in the road. Once you've beaten a level you can go back to camp and cook a variety of meals and sell the excess for gold. You use gold to level up the cart, the amount of towers you can build, and to unlock new build and recipies. It's never explained where the materials come from, or where to find a specific material. It also can be quite tough sometimes as you cant optimise your towers as the final upgrades are not in english. The upgrade icons also dont specify what the final upgrade is trying to achieve because of the missing English but even imagery such as clock goes up, 3 forks (fast AoE), clock down, big sword (Slow high damage) would suffice. The core gameplay is relatively fun, there is some skill involved such as trying to stop the cart at specific points so your towers can tank the damage whilst your car stays protected. You can trade resources for tower upgrades or repairs, and you want to repair frequently because you lose your materials when they die and your want them taking damage instead of the cart because the map resources cannot be used to repair the cart. There is a fair bit of progression but I haven't played much, I'm hoping to see lots of synergies and tower variety in the late game. I'm also hoping to see rare materials and recipies too but I wouldnt expect it. You progress by doing ever harder maps which unlock the next in a chain but you are free to return to older maps at any time to farm more resources to cook into meals to generate gold for updates if the game gets too hard. Shopping is very simplified, you are presented a price adjust, sliding this changes the number on the top which represents customer satisfaction so you want to min max your money per meal and reputation gained per sale. You can also season your meals to better suit the customer needs but you wont always have the right seasoning or slots. A simple request is a customer wants salty in a meal which doesnt have the salt attribute, you can adjust that. Visuals are actually stunning in my opinion, very clean and clear art style.
https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/59067/Kill_Time_Tower_Defense/
fun/funny concept, but very bad design and balancing, lot of physics glitches/issues, and genuinely just... not playable. Also, portions of the game and instructions are not yet english translated.
