Wizards of the Coast removed all 'old' Magic The Gathering games because they want to make money on Magic Arena. Now I can no longer unlock/buy the expansions for Magic 2014. It's also impossible to get all achievements, since some of them are expansion only achievements. I really liked Magic 2012 and also Magic 2014. Real shame on WotC that they removed these good games because of their greed.
If you're familiar with Magic The Gathering, then you've probably heard this phrase tossed around whenever people argue about "good" or "bad" cards, sets, mechanics, designs, etc.: "People play Magic for fun, so anything that prevents people from playing Magic is inherently unfun." By that logic, one of the biggest unfun moves must be Wizards removing the entire Duels of the Planeswalkers series from Steam. Duels of the Planeswalkers series is still considered by many to be the best digital version of Magic. It came out during a time when Magic was still primarily an “analog” card game— paper cards with its own identity and flavour. Naturally, we wanted a solid digital adaptation, and we really got it: a rather faithful, evolving version that grew alongside the real game. But then Wizards apparently decided that a good digital version should not exist. So the whole series got nuked from Steam, and now new players can’t even find it, let alone play it. Time is 2025, I get this sudden urge to play Magic. The experience of trying to do so legitimately today is basically the embodiment of capitalism’s worst instincts baked into a trading card game. A legitimate copy of this game costs hundreds—if not thousands—of dollars, and you’ll have to navigate the shady secondary markets to get it. And when you finally get it, it is still likely missing contents. Back in the day, I played Duels of the Planeswalkers for days and nights (although on pirated copies). This time eventually I got this game working with all the community mods. I thought I had one of the best digital versions of Magic on my hand, ready for endless enjoyment. Hell, I even still keep my savefile from over 10 years ago. Yet when I started the game, I didn't feel a thing. The urge was gone, completely. I just browsed through the decks and cards, did nothing and ur, chilled?. That’s when it hit me: I have nobody to play with. Not digitally, not physically, not even talk about the damn game. My group that used to play, not only Magic but also D&D, Warhammer, etc. together, is gone. In the group there was a Russian guy I don't even know if he's still alive today. People come and go. Maybe it's the similar with Magic the Gathering: packs, cards, bans, and video games. Maybe people just need to accept that this particular game has walked and finished(well, more like got murdered) its life cycle. All of the above, is by no means a rant against Magic or this particular game per se. Magic the Gathering is certainly an awesome game; and Duels of the Planeswalkers series is certainly an awesome adaptabtion in video game format. But like in that saying: "People play Magic for fun, so anything that prevents people from playing Magic is inherently unfun." This game got bolted, and that fact makes Magic on PC way less accessible. So, this is inherently very bad. Thumbs down bad.
Good luck finding it. Wizards has gone full microtransaction as of late and aren't putting gems like the old MTG games out again. Until we push for a video game like Konami did with Yugioh, we'll be struggling. Well, at least we have Forge.
i don´t remember exactly when i bough the complete game with all it´s 48 (!!) dlc .. but they are there, and i am happy they are. because of that, the game is still complete in every aspect. everything is already unlocked and playable. i´d rate this game 4/5 stars, because the ai is rather slow and sometimes absolutely dumb, but that´s okay, since it´s a 11 year old game by now. it´s nice, but also dated mtg game.
shi, has it been 11 years already?? this taught me magic, mtg kinda buns nowadays but old magic is so peak
Lots of fun. True to MTG. Biggest flaw: cannot zoom cards in deck builder or in unwrapped packs, because I don't have a mouse (I use a trackpad). There is no mouse wheel. Also, the keyboard zoom does not work.
Cool game back in the days for fans of the TCG.
