Mad Max

I don't like using this expression, but this truly is a hidden gem. Movie adaptations are usually poorly converted into video games, but Mad Max captures the atmosphere of the movies remarkably well. This is an open world action game, with combat somewhat reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham games. But the open world gives it a very different feeling. It is bright, dusty and windswept, and you can almost feel the heat, dust and wind. Racing across the wasteland at full speed while trying to catch and intercept a convoy is particularly exhilarating. The audio is excellent. Just hearing your engine roar, or enemy vehicles approaching on the horizon, adds a lot to the experience. The atmosphere is fantastic too, with dynamic weather and some truly impressive sandstorms. The story is not particularly original, but it captures the fallen, almost doomed spirit of Mad Max very well. Combat can sometimes be frustrating, but I actually enjoyed it. Once you get the timing right, fights become very rewarding. Resources such as fuel and ammunition feel scarce enough that you appreciate how harsh life is in this post apocalyptic world, without the game ever turning into a tedious survival simulator. It is very well balanced. A surprisingly atmospheric and satisfying Mad Max game, and definitely worth playing.
