Makes the best of limited features and a number of formats, with audiovisuals that were the hallmark of C64 classics. A condensed number of levels and only a minimum amount of mechanics, means it does not build upon those versions, only replicates what they had to offer. There could easily have been a whole chapter of levels for each format (top-down and platformer) switching between soldier, buggy and boat. Rather than a simple weapon system, a fully formed inventory with specific weapons to pick up and use would have been better. Directional control lacks the precision enjoyed by enemies. MGF is something to MAYBE look at for anyone who enjoys old-school top-down shooters.

STATUS: Looks fully released, stable and fairly polished with few noticeable bugs. A Christmas themed variant was added

APPEAL: Anyone who enjoys playing simple retro games with a military theme and doesn't mind a mix of formats

VALUE: Given the x8 levels and x3 game modes would take around 5-10h depending on difficulty, a small sale is justified

Key provided by the developer through curator INDIE GEMS | Click to follow and receive updates for reviews of a similar nature
More info below.... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3182202255
OBSERVATIONS:
► ARCADE mode is the hardest as it enforces playing every level sequentially in one sitting. STANDARD allows the choice of which level to play. CHRISTMAS changes the terrain and adds seasonal touches while allowing continuation upon death with lives. ► There are only x8 LEVELS in 2.5 formats. The TOP-DOWN ones are great, played as soldiers, a buggy or boat. Full of the sort of gameplay that made these styles very enjoyable. SIDE-SCROLLING platformer levels are noticeably shorter and remindful of why they were never my favourite. ► There are x3 CHARACTER TYPES defined by different move speed, fire-rate and damage resistance. Characters can also get in and out of tanks in some levels. Others levels are played solely in buggies or amphibious craft. ► INVENTORY consists of a basic primary weapon and a handful of grenades. Upgrades can be collected: shotgun, bullet spray, automatic fire, flamethrower, rockets and homing variants. Ammo for these is limited and must be used sparingly. Med-kits are available. ► GAMEPLAY definitely resembles the classic arcade games reminiscent of the 80/90s, but with the same limitations. Top-down levels allow characters to go back as required to collect bypassed power-ups. On side-scrolling levels characters can jump or go prone to avoid attacks, but these need good timing. Care must be taken when initiating some spawns as retreating can cause clusters of bullets to demolish the player in a few seconds. ► GUNPLAY is enjoyable. It requires positioning and accuracy. Tough to keep doing when constantly having to avoid incoming fire. Shooting is limited by range however. There are no chains of destruction. Enemies have the advantage of being able to shoot over terrain, which the character's starting weapon is unable to do. ► MECHANICS are nothing fancy, just enough to replicate the experience of those early day run and gun shooters. There are a few differences between perspective types. Characters have x8 movement and firing directions. There is a better chance to dodge damage by jumping or lying prone on the platformer levels. Ammo isn't limited by mag capacity. Bonus multipliers are incentive for destroying and killing all enemies on a map, for high-scoring. ► ENEMIES come in a broad range of types, but there not enough bosses for level finales. Static models include: bunkers, turrets and guard towers. Soldiers, tanks, helos, planes, trains and a couple of drones have basic moving patterns. Soldiers come in variants armed with the weapons available to the player. The mix of enemies in platformer mode stand-out, and feel more satisfying to overcome. ► The AI is quite basic but overall performs adequately. On harder modes they have the advantage of numbers and come in waves. They make use of these to overwhelm the player. Targeting is very accurate and provides little chance to avoid them with luck. The ability of enemies to fire over terrain, without being hit by the starting weapon gives them another advantage. ► AUDIOVISUALS captures the retro (C64) mood. The screen shake would annoying as it ever was, except it wasn't that noticeable. Particle effects and backgrounds do a decent job of placing the player in the environment. Explosions are well done. 80s style arcade music and audio effects complete the ambience. ► Both controller and kb/m are viable CONTROLS, though kb/m is more precise. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3182231819
COMPLEXITY:
🔶 ACCESSIBILITY - With no complex concepts or a need to explain them, the game can be played off the bat. 🔶 DIFFICULTY - The hardest challenge is Arcade mode where all levels must be completed in one sitting. No mean feat without any lives or continuation on death. In Standard mode once a level is completed, the next one becomes available. 🔶 BALANCE - With a good number of medkits and weapon upgrades, sometimes even tanks some levels are well scoped. On harder difficulties the most need to be made of these limited resources. 🔶 PACING - Apart from when mobs are stopped from pathing directly towards the player's character, the game paces pretty well. Though on Arcade mode, it can be difficult to keep the same level of concentration going. 🔶 SCALING - Is consistent with this genre, across the different types of levels for a particular game mode. Opponents become tougher and mobs are varied in the threat and shooting patterns they deliver.
STAYING POWER:
🟨 REPLAY VALUE - As levels are scripted there are minimal reasons to replay levels, apart from getting higher scores, playing on harder difficulties or each mode/variant. Its possible to want to replay using each character. 🟨 LONGEVITY - Getting on the score leader-board is about it, as achievements are organic and fairly straightforward to complete. An endless mode, speed-run leader-board or bona-fide coop mode could have prolonged interest.
PRODUCTION:
🟣 QUALITY - Did not experience many bugs, but there are a few. Others have reported additional ones. Settings are basic, but there are music and sound volumes. Key/controller remapping is adequate. It is possible to complete the game. ** More details in the FULL REVIEW ** 🟣 STABILITY - No crashes, but alt.tabbing for too long will freeze the game and require a full restart. 🟣 STEAM - Straightforward organic achievements. Screenshot capture. No Cloud saving. Only limited controller support. 🟣 OPTIMISATION - Ran adequately at 60 FPS.
The Ultimate Run-and-Gun Cocktail
This game is basically:

Contra
Commando
Ikari Warriors
Jackal
Gun.Smoke
Guerrilla War
Heavy Barrel
... with a little bit of Pocky & Rocky + Metal Slug + Broforce for good measure. Verdict: I like it. If you like any/all of the games I just listed, you'll probably like it too.
Machine Gun Fury is a homage to old classics like Jackal, Commando and Contra made in the best way possible. The game is simple, walk around shooting everything and throwing some grenades for good measure, but still, the game is extremely addicting and fun. Simple controls, simple graphics, simple sounds, but a very challenging gameplay that will grant you HOURS of fun. For the price, this game is a no brainer, get it now and have LOADS of fun!!!
Retro goodness. I just wish this game were a twin stick shooter. Floyd is the guy you want to choose during the earlier stages (less damage taken), and Suzi (faster) during the jumping levels. Excellent game that would greatly benefit with twin stick controls to be a more directional shooter. It is what it is and I already told like 5 people into retro games that they must check Machine Gun Fury out. Old school gamers will be impressed.
Feeling torn about this game, but overall I give it a thumbs up. The top down levels, and especially the vehicle based ones, are fun to play. These levels are inspired by Who dares wins, Commando, Jackal and River raid. I liked the boatlevel the most, but its way way to short. As others already pointed out, being able to aim (or atleast lock the direction of the gun) would benefit the gameplay immensely in the top down levels. The sidescrolling levels are the games weaker part.
....... \_☠_ ▄▂_ .........[█|||███████]▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▃▂ ..__▂▅█ Mafia do Retrogame █▅▄▃▂ I████████████████████████████] ...◥⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲◤ MAFIA DO RETROGAME - YOUTUBE @mafiadoretrogame https://www.youtube.com/@mafiadoretrogame MAFIA DA GAMEPLAY https://www.youtube.com/@mafiadagameplay GAMEPLAY ATÉ ZERAR! https://youtu.be/g2D7o17PvkI
Machine Gun Fury, is one of those games which is equally addictive as it is frustrating. It took me a while to get the hang of it, that is most probably just my bad gaming skills :) Once I did, I was totally hooked. Like the old arcade machines it is paying homage to, you just keep on trying to better your score. This game is a great way to step away from reality and challenge your reflexes - take control of a weapon and shoot your way through waves of enemies. Gorgeous graphics make this game a joy to play. I would definitely recommend it, if you are looking for a gem of an arcade game.
