What you see is what you get. The writing and acting, and characters are fairly flat, and everyone pretty much falls in love with you at first glance. At least "Five hearts" had it humor to fall back on, but this seems to purely be "cute moments with cute girls", without anything underneath. Perhaps I dropped the game too soon, but I just could not stand how stale the writing felt, 'It's another 6 Girls, each with their own trope' thing, rather than them having actual personalities. and that's not a bad thing, and may work for some, But if I'm playing a 'dating sim' I actually want to get to know the characters as 'people', rather than 'a collection of cute moments.' I just can't really get attached to any characters like that. I just don't understand why we can't have both cute/sexy girls, with a bare minimum level of depth. JRPG's and otome games figured that out decades ago.
Love Is All Around Review (not including DLC) - 7/10 I played Love Is All Around for a little over 4 hours on Steam and reached a few endings. I played on a Windows 11 PC with specs above the recommended requirements. This is only the second East Asian FMV game I’ve played, so I’m still fairly new to the genre, but I’m starting to get a better feel for how these games work. Love Is All Around is a full-motion video life/dating sim where you play as Gu Yi, a man struggling financially and drifting between jobs, homes, and an uncertain future. As the story progresses, you interact with several female characters, and your choices determine which relationships and endings you unlock. What made me curious about this game was its reputation for helping popularize the modern romance FMV genre. Even though it has been a few years since release, after playing it, I can understand why it gained attention. Installation was smooth, and the game immediately launched in English for me, which was convenient. The interface is simple and easy to understand, including the scene selection, replay, forward, and back options. Performance was also great. I did not experience lag, even when jumping between scenes or rewinding and replaying choices. My main issue is the story structure. Some characters need to be romanced properly early on, or you lose the chance to reach their best endings, even though you still have to play through later chapters where they no longer matter much. On the other hand, some later characters appear so late that their romances feel rushed, almost like they are suddenly throwing themselves at Gu Yi without enough build-up. Although to be fair, I think that this gives some value to replaying the game so you can achieve all endings, which from a gameplay standpoint is good but this kind of narrative/storytelling might leave some players wanting more. Another letdown for me was Liu, the comic relief friend. I understand what the game was trying to do with him, but the story would mostly still work without him, and his role did not feel fully justified. The cast and acting were fine overall, but the script sometimes felt disconnected. Depending on whether you pick the right or wrong option, some character reactions can feel so different that it almost seems like you are talking to a completely different person. The endings were not bad, but for me, many of the romances did not have enough tension, chemistry, or gradual development for the emotional payoff to fully land. That said, I do appreciate that the game stays mostly wholesome and does not rely too heavily on fanservice. To be fair, considering when this game was released, it was still a bold and interesting entry in the genre. I appreciate what it represents for romance FMV games, even if I think later games have improved on the formula. Overall, I enjoyed some of the interactions and had no technical issues during my playthrough. I would recommend Love Is All Around to players who are new to FMV games and want a safe, accessible starting point. Pros: Beginner-friendly for players new to FMV games Smooth performance and hassle-free installation Simple and intuitive interface Mostly wholesome tone English settings worked well for me Cons: A lot of the romance feels rushed or unearned Some routes lose relevance too early Later romances can feel underdeveloped Some chapters feel like mandatory filler if you only care about one girl Final rating: 7/10
