Surprisingly good bullet heaven, surprising because the art looks just a tiny bit better than one of those "dude learns how to code a video game in three weeks, uses MS Paint to draw it" specials that are all over Steam, but no. The graphics look fine if you zoom in a bit (leave the field of vision on default rather than wider), and they have a good sense of humor to them. Combined with the over the top music, they make this game more charming and unique than you'd expect for the Steam bargain bin. At first the game feels floaty, but yeah, you're in a boat on water. Your ship should be a little unwieldly, and this is remedied by both holding the X (drift) button when turning, and you can also upgrade turn speed and tightness with in-run powerups and meta powerups. Or choose a ship with a better turning radius. Which leads me into the next point of what this game does well: powerups and unlocks. There's a ton of them, and most of them fit the pirate/nautical theme really well. How about attack parrots circling your boat? Or sending out musical attack notes from a sung pirate shanty? The ships all have very specific strengths compared to one another, which makes you want to choose specific level up powers based on need for your ship. The game is well thought out. One of the few negatives is the RNG is a bit feast or famine. Kill a boss monster who drops a chest and you can get between 1 and 5 powerups from it, and even more importantly you might get lucky and one of those powerups turns one of your weapons to a continuous fire, and with that you're probably going to go 2x-4x as far as you would have otherwise. But really that's not so bad. There are a lot of boats and captains and powerups to unlock in the meta progression, and I don't want to play this game for 30 hours so give me some magic runs, that's cool. If you like the genre you'd like this. Fun, humorous, and plays well.
If you like Vampire Survivors then you will probably like this game. That said it does enough to differentiate itself so that it doesn't just feel like a facsimile of that game, particularly the way you control the movement of your ship. I like the pirate theme, definitely helps give the game character. It is a little disappointing that the theme song is AI however.
Sail around, kill mobs, upgrade your ship, upgrade your weapons, upgrade your captain, repeat. Great little game so far and worth the price. It's similar to a lot of the others in the genre, but a little more chill in my opinion. That may change as I unlock more maps. (12 hours in demo+full game)
Not my usual type of game but looked cool, next thing I know I'm sucked in for hours... Upgrading power ups to the max level is so satisfying. The art and the music for the levels is awesome, super easy to get lost in and relax to. Highly recommend!
This game is creative and genuinely full of love, It is clear the passion that has been put into it and is a fun game with tons of replayability. Definetly worth the money
At first impression this game seems like a pretty standard VS-clone… but then you start to dig deeper and something just feels different. The levels actually get harder, not only through HP sponges, but the enemies also start to become faster and have more dangerous attacks. In the beginning you think speed is an irrelevant stat, you pass on it constantly, but then it becomes one of the best stats in the game. If VS is akin to a standing still / walking simulator, Lord O’ Pirates is a LET’S ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GO simulator. This game has physics! I love the melee weapons, swinging a literal black hole around on a chain as it sucks in and crushes your enemies feels so satisfying. The way your ship moves and drifts… the game honestly feels more like an actual action roguelite rather than a survivor-like, but at the same time, you can choose abilities that make it play like either, it’s all about how you choose to play. The progression system feels familiar and well-paced. Some things are easy to unlock, some require solving some puzzles that require a little figuring out. There’s lots of big bosses to discover and battle. Also the humor is spot on and the music is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fire. From the title screen to the level soundtracks, it’s a vibe. If you pick this up, you gotta at least play through all the levels. Don’t be fooled by the slower gameplay early on, ♥♥♥♥ gets wild.
I've played for 20 hrs and not unlocked everything. Maybe I'm bad, but still playing.
I've played this game quite a bit at this point! I initially just wanted something quick and casual but found myself being sucked in for hours at a time. I love the balance of the coin-upgrade system, however some of the in game abilities you obtain in runs are more underwhelming than others. I like how that makes runs more random though, and having to adapt and survive makes me that much more invested. Love the music, the ambiance of the levels, and appreciate the wide ship and character selection. Even if I still haven't been able to pet that dog.
I never knew pirate ships could do these sick drifts!
I'm addicted to this in a way I really wasn't anticipating. Really enjoyable progression and reward system that just leaves me excited to try out my new gear on a new run. I'm pretty sure I have yet to enjoy even a fraction of what this game has to offer, but the polish on this game has me itching to keep playing. The sound track and weapons are so creative and cohesive. Really cool aesthetic and I'm dying to unlock every captain and ship just so I can pick my favorite combo.
