Easily the best Key VN, and IMO the best slice of life style VN out there. This game is the absolute gold-standard of character writing. In a medium where most "friends" feel like acquaintances at best, every interaction these guys have with each other feels "real."
I LOVE SASAMI I LVOE SASAMI SASAMI MOGS ALLLLLLL OF YOUR FAVS BTW SASASASASSASASASASASASASAASASAA we all love Sasami Sasasegawa. Why? because she has the perfect personality, she's funny, she's cute, she's AMAZING SASAMISASAMIIIII
This VN holds a very special place in my heart due to its powerful writing and VA performances.
The "Refrain" part of the VN is one of the most emotionally devastating pieces of media that I have ever read, although I think they kind of messed it up when they sprinkled pixie dust everywhere and brought everybody back to life. If they had ended it right after they woke up in the hospital with just Rin and Riki struggling to move on, I think it would have been perfect.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed reading about a cast of characters so much in a VN as I have this one. They're all great despite the clearly big-eyed 2000 anime designs. The interactions between the gang (and also their dynamic as a baseball team) are all fantastic. The jokes almost always land, and even the "slice of life" elements work really well with a consistency that I haven't seen in most other VNs I've read. That's pretty remarkable. I definitely thought Rin and her story were a highlight, but each character had their own unique personality that keeps the writing fresh. I also think that the VN achieves its "nakige" goal in that most routes ended up making me spill tears that I didn't know I had. I only felt like a couple of the routes were a bit contrived.
The main offenders for me were the Haruka and Kud routes. Trying to get into international politics and having Riki release her from her chains felt really forced, and the set up for Haruka's route of being an abused child was too ridiculous for me to take seriously.
The rest were pretty hard-hitting, and I was really impressed by Kanata's route in particular. Saya's route is a lot of fun too! I recommend playing it last to cap off a truly stellar visual novel. Usually, when JVNs start writing about the power of friendship or why you need to think about the society around you, I start to roll my eyes. I've read so many botched stories in visual novels and games that use that as a central theme [looking at you Persona/Love, Elections, and Chocolate], but here I think it works. This is definitely one of Key's best visual novels despite having some minor flaws. Highly recommended!
Wafu! 10/10
