[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
A masterpiece? No, but a hardcore twin-stick shooter with 10 levels. Shoot, dash, collect weapons, use a bomb, defeat the 3 bosses. Tight controls, fluid animation, lots of enemies in a small - but big enough to allow manovering - playing field. Permadeath, online highscores and an affordable price. My wife hated the explosion sounds, which is always a good sign as well. Liked it, although I only reached Level 3 so far.
***Many thanks go to Hayley, a very special person in my life, for proofing this review. Sent to me by the developer of the title, Zouhair of Vibrant Allegory, through Steam Curator Connect, Lifeless Vanguard (LV) is an arcade twin-stick shooter that merits challenge and promotes Steam’s Leaderboard system as an incentive for further and repeated play. From its initial release, this title has expanded and improved through sound executive response, boosting my own personal confidence and positive relation toward this developer’s future projects. Though simplistic in general scope and design, gameplay is highly accentuated versus immaculate graphical quality, LV also utilizes other intriguing elements described below.
Here are just a few reasons to play this visually unassuming title: Gameplay - In Lifeless Vanguard, the player assumes control of a lone spacecraft against waves of enemy units within a confined area, preventing displaced combat flow by players fleeing away from stated scenarios. Having experienced this title with both the controller and keyboard peripherals, the control scheme presented with the principal twin-stick shooting layout (in addition to reassignable Dash and Bomb Burst keys) this title holds no encumbrance on the player in regards to play. A score multiplier can be attained and increased by avoiding damage while destroying invading units to emphasize the inclusion and value of Steam’s Leaderboard integration, as well as to promote repeated play sessions, this multiplier may be negated when the player’s ship takes damage. ‘Super Guns’ may be acquired on a randomized basis after defeating enemies, and allow a limited ammunition special attack to decimate foes, with additional items including health pickups. Experience orbs may be gathered to increase tactical advantage through expanded firepower. The player’s ship may improve by firing an abundance of shots from multiple angles in contrast to ejecting in a single line. Upon taking damage, accrued experience is released into the area simultaneously reducing the player’s level, the orbs may be gathered after this discharge, however this poses a question as to whether or not the given area is safe for the player to reenter during combat scenarios. When the player’s spacecraft is defeated, an option is given to allow the player to continue in Practice Mode, though Steam’s Achievement and Leaderboard components are disabled to allow for accessibility for less experienced patrons. I personally found Lifeless Vanguard to be a rewarding experience with intriguing responsive controls, identifiable enemies, and intriguing boss battles. TL:DR - Though not eccentric, LV retains a simple design and eclipses many twin-stick shooters of its class. Lifeless Vanguard holds promise as a hardcore experience while also being accessible to casual players with its option to continue upon defeat. I recommend this title to fans of the stated genres, as well as to fanatics of casual experiences. Thanks for reading. Do you feel this review helped in any way? This game is as straightforward as twin-stick shooters get. Serviceable graphics and soundtrack. Minimalist menus. Rock-solid controls. Clever enemy design. Unforgiving difficulty. Exactly the kind of shmup I look for to appreciate. Great game, looking forward to whatever's next down the pipeline. 8/10
In this video I take a look at Lifeless Vanguard a score challenge arena twin stick wave shooter ( I used the K.B.). It's a high quality game with really upbeat music. It has a nice upgrade system where you pickup tokens to eventually upgrade but if you take a hit you drop tokens and downgrade. You then need to twirl around and try to get them back while being shot at by all the enemies. If you die you are given the option to continue but if you do it too often you will eventually loose too many tokens and it will become harder to continue. Bright and vibrant graphics and fun. Possibly a little on the costly side for a score challenge game but it's been well made so?
