These kinds of games have some mix of narative and sandbox. This one has a pretty even mix. Something that this game does that most others don't is that it actually shows you the values you need in order to pull off most actions. This allows you to plan for future playthroughs if you like. What I love about the game is that there seem to be a ton of events that are specific to your actions in the game. If you went to college for a financial major, an opportunity for a ponsi scheme shows up later. If you get married and have a kid then you might find an event of the kid getting kidnapped. So many things happen that there is a lot of replay value.
so many different choices and still, the same consequences. i've tried to go too many creative ways for 10 times and i've got only 3 endings so far.

By Mike Walter, the author of "Life of a Wizard" and "The Lost Heir" trilogy. Three works that has a lot of point in common, quality being one of those point. Well-written, well thought, a lot of statistics taken in account and a lot of specific event tied to how you developped your character. Some negative point being : 1.despite the numerous choices, in the end the outcome might seem similar 2.I think Mike Walter is a great plot and story writing author but each time he doesn't make fleshing out his character a priority, in those stories (which are great) you barely have the time to get to know the protagonists like the romance or the main side-kicks. It's not that there is nothing about them, it's just the minimum. 3.the end always seems to come a little too fast, especially in life of a mobster, there is not much said on the consequences and it's a little like "okay, finished, done" I had a lot of fun testing the different way you can experience the story but once you did a few run-through you pretty much saw 90% of the game and there is just a few text changes here and there. So I think all those choices are like a big storyline with variations and not really a novel that gives clear different path. That's not really a problem though, just a fact. Overall Mike Walter is one of my favourite CYOA so far and Life of a Mobster didn't disappoint me. You're not forced to play a character you don't recognize yourself into, the story is believable and you read through it easily. Sometime you're overtaken by the "meta" side of the title, but I actually think it's positive. Just take a break and dip in again later, the story still has some lenght to it.
I wasn't expecting this game to be anything at all but it is actually alot of fun.
Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 492: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆ (7/10) I feel like I say this a lot, but I was very pleasantly surprised by Life of a Mobster! Written by Mike Walter, this is one of the earliest Hosted Games, all the way back in the ye olden days of 2014. As you might cleverly guess, you play as a mobster. The store description doesn't do it justice, I think. For one, the game follows your whole life, starting as a kid to an adult. Second, it’s quite stat/mechanic/choices heavy. While I don’t know a whole lot (read: anything) about coding, it seems like the author must have a good grasp on coding. Third, the story is surprisingly gripping. My only complaints are the length and character development. All in all, though, a solid work, especially in 2014. (And thank you to the staff for giving me a free copy!)
Pros:
✅ Story. Who doesn’t want to be a mobster? Walter puts his own twist on the genre, though: the game follows your whole life and the rise and fall of being a mobster. The breadth is insane, and there’s so many scenes about (what I imagine to be) the nitty gritty. Sure, you choose who to kill (or not!) but there’s also scenes where you debate about who to promote or where you want your HQ to be. You can choose to be a hitman or decide to be a pacifist. You can end up as the top dog by the end or get silenced. You can even be a turncoat and side with the FBI as an informant. ✅ Choices that matter. There’s real reactivity to this game. Choose to have a wealthy upbringing; you won’t get in trouble with the police because you’re “one of the good kids.” Choose to major in law; use your knowledge to help you with your criminal endeavors. Be a loyal soldier; your boss will remember that. Adopt a child; you’ll have an event where they’re kidnapped later. So many little and big choices! ✅ I love the mechanics. First, there’s criminal rackets: extortion, drugs, gambling, loan sharking. You can have multiple rackets and multiple types or put all your efforts into just one type. These bring a certain amount of money. Then there’s 13 skills, and I think 9 or so reputation bars. But there’s also a fantastic inventory/management aspect. You’ll have a certain amount of money, and you get to decide what you spend your money on. And again, the choices matter, even the little things! For example, I bought a bright yellow car. A couple characters riffed on how ugly and unsuitable it was for a tough gangster. How did the author know to include that? There’s guns to buy, police to bribe, vehicles to repair, so much stuff. I could spend a whole ‘nother book on just this inventory system. ✅ There’s also a
prison
mechanic, which involves molding your reputation and money as you see fit. Of course, you have to start from zero, but I was impressed by how there’s a new yet similar mechanic halfway through the game. ✅ I really like how when you choose an option, the game tells you which stat goes up and by how much. I also appreciated knowing the greyed out options that were unavailable to me. ✅ I was also surprised by how many romance options you could have. There’s … five, I think! And a couple flings, as well. ✅ I’m a fast reader, and even though Mobster only lasted an hour, it felt longer than I expected.
Cons:
🟥 After reading, I think it’s pretty clear Walter is a story/choice writer, rather than a character-focused writer. Of course, it’s best to be both, but these are indie writers after all. There’s a noticeable lack of character development or character anything, to be honest. You barely have the time to get to know the protagonist, side characters, and especially the romance. There’s no talking, no bonding with any character, but especially the romance. For example, I chose to get married to a celebrity and adopted three kids. I had a short proposal scene and a short marriage scene, but I had no dates, no domesticity, no actual romance? Just “click this button” and you’re together now. Same thing with kids. I had three scenes with my children, but there was nothing about them growing up! Or their school life, or how they acted as a teenager, or you know, parenting scenes. Because parenting is kinda a big deal. The characters, in general, felt very bland; it was hard to tell people apart. 🟥 Quite sudden ending. All of a sudden, the game announces this big event is happening, no lead up or anything. I didn’t solve the crisis, sadly, but I got an okay ending. That ending is a short paragraph talking about my life, but no mention of my family or friends. 🟥 I feel like skills are a bit too harsh. There were quite a lot I had 0% in, and in a lot of checks, I was always 5 or 10% short. There were also a lot of skill checks at the end that were 95% needed. 🟥 No consequences to poor relationship with your mob crew. I had a 0% relationship with someone, but I don’t think anything happened. 比较早的一部,基本都是叙述性的语言,就算是恋爱部分也很少有对话,ROs几乎全程镶边,所以
Alex/Alexis
You start off as a kid and live through your school years. After school you'll choose a career. Soon you'll join the mob. Your main task after joining will be finding new ways to make them money. As you play you'll find opportunities to gain power and respect within the mob and the city. Pros: -13 skills. -9 reputation bars. 5 mob families. You can choose the name of the family you join. The other 4 families are basically the Russians, Italians, Japanese, and Mexicans. Some families are associated with specific criminal activities. -~9 relationship bars. These are your mob crew and important people in your life. -You make your money mainly through criminal rackets: extortion, drugs, gambling, loan sharking. You can have multiple rackets and multiple types or put all your efforts into just one type. -Surprised at how many romance options you have. I think you can have 5 romances at the same time. -NPCs are well done and have unique personalities. Although some seem to disappear throughout the story. -Prison mechanics are interesting. Too detailed to get into here. -Fair amount of things to spend your money on. -Longer than I expected. -At least 13 different endings. Cons: -Lazy and sudden ending. All of a sudden the game announces this big event is happening, no led up or anything. I solved the crisis, unintentionally, by using my best skill at 100% against a faction I had a 10% reputation with. And just like that I got a good ending. There is no reason this should have worked. That ending is a short paragraph talking about my accomplishments. BUT most of those I didn't actually accomplish and wasn't working towards in the game. -Skills need a rework. Most of these I couldn't use, because I was always 5 or 10 short. When you use a skill it gives you a bonus for using that skill. So I got stuck using one skill out of 13 over and over again. I had a secondary skill I got to use a couple of times, but only rarely did I ever get to use one of the other 11 skills. -Relationship bars for your mob crew are meaningless. Usually you'll be given a choice between siding with one over the others. So by the end 4 people hated me and one loved me, but there were no consequences to this. -You also gain heat and respect. I have no idea what these do. Maybe they trigger one of the other endings??? Final Verdict: -Despite the lazy ending I really enjoyed this game. It's worth full price.
A fun game.
This game is awesome! And i usually hate to read and have a hard time to concentrate but not in this game! It's a very exciting and cool story and your choices really make a diffrence, i've played this game 3-4 times and it's great!
+1 Very interesting story with many choices. I just beat it for the first time, and am already getting ready for my second playthrough. Made Reckless risks after killing multiple people in the Japanese and Russian Mob 3. Shot a rat, but Don De Luca still died 4. Forced an older man to shoot his wife and than commit suicide 5. Got promoted to Capo 6. Screwed over three members of my crew 7. Retired, and told my story to a kid
