I bought it because I am looking for my Vampire Survivors fix and this wasn't it. I don't like a game that has strict time limits and your slow character somehow has to find a bunch of bad guys hiding rather than attacking. Boring. The enemy designs are uninspired, the sound is really good but my movement and aiming took a lot of time to get use to. It is not intuitive at all. BIG WARNING: Every stage has at least a 15-30 second time limit that adds another layer but unwelcome one. The higher you level up the more enemies that rush you, which is good but what's not good is finding a bunch of enemies stuck in corners or on invisible treadmills or in some cases just standing still like an idiot. This game is needlessly difficult because of bad game designs. If you are going to put a small time limit within each mini-level give me at least a capable AI that knows how to target me or make me fast enough to adequately get across the screen to check for any lingering bad guys. I wish I never bought this game and that I did a lot more research on the game mechanics. Shame on me.
Currently very lackluster, should have released in Early Access due to how little actual content it has.
the game is very challenging and it lacks certain mechanics and content but it is pretty fluid. Looking for more future updates!
A frenetic, hack-and-shoot arcade game that takes Akane-style action, adds a roguelike-inspired build system, and cranks the whole experience up to 11. Lawbringer is FAST, and it's HARD. While you don't die in one hit, and healing is relatively accessible from healing drops and certain passive upgrades, you'll nonetheless be dying a lot during your struggles in the arena. On top of this, a timer system, refreshed by enemy kills, demands incessant aggression on the player's part -- but that's exactly the point. Lawbringer is at its best when you're slashing through enemies, frantically dodging and firing off whatever gun you can get your hands on. The game does have its limitations (the upgrade/gun pools are not huge, player animations are limited, and arena waves always feature the same static enemy composition), but, for a $4 indie game, I'm more than willing to forgive the smaller scope of the game. Since it's been a while since this game has had a new review, I will note that nearly every criticism in earlier negative reviews has been addressed by the developers by the time of my own review here. The timer "timeout death" is now toggleable, leveling up is initiated by the player, traps have better visibility, and enemy AI has been tweaked to get stuck on corners less often. In general, Lawbringer does feel like relatively polished given its size and stature -- the gameplay is smooth and feels pretty fair, even if there is an occasional rough edge here and there. All in all, Lawbringer is a nice little action game that has its own sense of personality. The lightspeed action, moody atmosphere, and low price point make it an easy recommend for action, roguelike, and arcade game fans.
This is a really fun hack and slash , pixel graphics roguelike game ,with good fighting mechanics its pretty challenging , it has cool after image dashing, the mobs will clash attacks with you often , they will keep their distance and dodge your attacks , and encircle you and hunt you down like bloodthirsty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ,the rock music with the HAAA HUUUU vocals make it intense, i've only made it to round 15(its pretty tough) , i wonder what the other rounds have to offer , for 5$ and limited amount of content , i wasent expecting it to be this good!
There's something special about this one
Being a predominantly strategy (mostly grand strategy or turn based) games enjoyer, I'm usually not a fan of high adrenaline, reflex based games with a timer to booth. But... there is just something about this one, that continues to bring me back for more ass whooping (usually, I get my ass handed to me), and somehow it doesn't feel pointless, and I don't feel the urge to rage quit. Latent masochism, maybe? But in all seriousness, after reading the reviews I expected it to be hard, and it was hard, so when I inevitably died, again and again (and some more), I didn't felt like a loser, and I tried to break my time, or stage, record until I got my fix or the RL called back. The only thing that I would like to be different is that I feel like the timer should stop after I kill the last enemy of that stage, but maybe that is not the point and would make the game too easy(?) Oh, and another thing! I really love it when I see smaller/cheaper games getting updates, to me that means that the devs really like what they are doing and will probably continue to invest time in it.
Game has potential. Right now it's just a real basic proof of concept "progressive wave hack-n-slash/twin stick gunner arena survival rogue-like" or PWHNSTSGASR for short. What it does right: Fast action, reasonably distinct graphics and sprites. Good fighting mechanics. There is your classic melee attack, a dash move, right stick aim and right trigger shoot. You can clash swords if attacks coincide, you can bat away projectiles with your melee attack as well. Has a leveling system with Roguelite style upgrades and different synergistic build options and so far it seems reasonably diversified but not over complicated. Has cool enemies with both melee and ranged attacks of different styles, with a reasonable amount of diversity including "elites". Has a leaderboard and the feeling of accomplishment when you rise up in the ranks. Your default gun has infinite ammo and you have to reload but it's not too slow and you can still run and dash while you reload. You can pick up temporary guns with different attack types that have limited ammo. These can be immediate game changers even if you only get three shots with one. What needs work: Enemy AI is bad. Enemies get stuck on things sometimes behind things and you can't find them, meanwhile the timer is running out and favor is going down... Needs more colors occasionally to refresh the eye palette, though the sword clash effects are decent... Sometimes your melee doesn't trigger even though you have full stamina...like some sort of delay but not telegraphed by any animation. Feels really bad when it happens. Enemy animations are jerky and lack frames so its kind of hard to gauge their timing sometimes...They wind up to swing so there is a telegraph but then one frame later bam! full swing has been executed...it breaks immersion and looks janky. So far there is only the one arena, the one character and no meta progression of any sort and just one mode of play. Traps are really hard to contend with because the action is so frenetic. Just a buzzkilling game ender as you are zipping around slaughtering enemies, racking up favor, zip-zip blammo SHOTGUN trap to the face. Game over. IDK...feels bad. Maybe make it stand out more somehow cause they look pretty much just like gun drops which is f*cked up honestly.... The reloading system is not intuitive and it seemed like sometimes you have to hold down the button to keep reloading other times just tap it and it continues reloading unless you cancel with a melee attack...not sure what is happening there...would be nice if fast loaders dropped as loot once in a while allowing you a full reload in one shot, maybe you could stock pile a few and upgrade how many and other bonuses when you use them... Free idea. Also, since the game is based on speed and action, it would be nice and much more fun if the exp and other drops (other than guns) were just automatically attracted to your character (like in Risk of Rain) or even just an icon in the UI out of the arena field. It takes away from your core mechanic to be distracted with running around to collect the exp. There is a parry system though I don't quite understand how it is supposed to work and I never even think of ever using it since this game gives you no time to think at all. Also for some reason you cannot see who is Top on the leader board unless you are close. It only shows you your position in the leader board along with about a range of 10 or so from your position. Its a really stupid choice, or maybe it's a bug. IDK needs to be fixed. Over all, for $3.99, if you like challenging fast game play and showing off your score in a leaderboard, you could do worse with your money. Devs are still updating it. Seems like it's worth supporting. That's my 5 cents. Inflation is a MONSTER. Just Keep Calm and Kellogg Globalists. Let's Go BrAnDoN!
Sadly not a fan of small arenas with a timer especially a short one like 20 sec. yeah, I failed to notice the timer from the store page...
Slow arena shooter that just doesn't hit the way the developer intended. The enemies and their attacks are not well explained leading to getting hit without seeing it coming. The gameplay is very slow and the arena is to small imo. Like i said i see the vision just not fun for me personally. Also side not i know it says its unknown if it works on steam deck or not but i can confirm it does without issue
It's a very hard game for me, obviously needs some polish. The sound and graphics are quite nice. For this price, absolutely worth it.
