Disclaimer: I personally know part of the team behind the game. The game is a party-based roguelike (up to 4 characters) that features two different gameplay layers. One strategic, where you advance through different types of randomly generated regions composed of locations and one tactical, where the combat is resolved.
The Journey
At the strategic level, to get to the next region you have to reach the portal location. In your way you will be hard pressed to make choices: you are in the way of a horde of orcs making time a luxury you don't have. So your party gets tired and unfit for combat, you have the option to rest in the wilderness and risk an attack or advance until you get to a tavern to sleep safely, maybe having to take a detour in the process. You have to feed the party and you know the next regions are scarce in food, so maybe better to visit additional locations to gather provisions before reaching the portal. But to use the portal you need tomes, one per party member, unless you assume the risk of losing one or more of your characters being teleported to who knows where... Certain events change some situations, for example: you can get the chance to meet the orcs, explain your situation and maybe offering some help in exchange for them holding their advance a bit, allowing you to recover your breath. I often find myself looking at the map reflecting on the options. Currently the locations and events are not text heavy and I think it helps keeping the game flowing at a good pace.
Combat
The combat develops in real-time but you can pause it whenever you want and give orders. The critical aspect is the morale system. Each combat encounter has a morale bar and killing an enemy lowers it by a certain amount: when it reaches a threshold all the remaining enemies flee and it's a victory. So the first thing to do is stop a bit, check the foes you face and plan which ones you are going to attack. Depending on the composition of your party, equipment and expendable resources you are willing to use (some powerful abilities require you to spend a gem, for example), you can take very different approaches. That's a part I really like, it gives you a lot of space to plan and allows to outplay your enemies even in relatively desperate situations. Another really important aspect are the hazards in the different battle maps: falling rocks, bursting flames or floor spikes are some examples. Many possibilities open during the combat: your warrior can taunt some orcs before a rock is going to fall in front of him, moving your mage behind a fire to protect them or maybe also forcing you to "micro" your characters. In general the combat has a lot of depth and the hazards force you to adapt through it.
Content
Still, it's in active development and as an early access it has rough edges to polish. The character control gets a bit clunky sometimes during the combat and can get you distracted, a bit annoying, but it doesn't stop me of enjoying it. Also it's not a hard game, but it takes a bit of time to get used to the current controls and UI given the amount of different mechanics that come into play. Contentwise currently you can play through the first three regions and there are enough locations and events to keep it replayable for a while, specially as you can experience certain events from different points of view, learning new elements of the story. The initial character selection is limited to two classes, while more can join your party later. Technically speaking I have experienced some bugs, but nothing game breaking.
Summary
There's an emphasize in creating choices that have consequences, making you weight your decisions and that permeates through the whole design. Every weapon and item you find is about giving more options and to favor certain strategies. You won't find yourself changing a weapon just to make a little bit more damage or get a small bonus, but giving you a meaningful advantage against a certain type of enemy or under some specific situation. Maybe enough to make you change your planned route through the forests to favor another along the mountains for example. It happens similarly with the different types of enemies, which have unique characteristics that make some strategies or equipment much more effective. All in all, it's a really well thought game with a very solid core design, which in my opinion is the most important thing in an early access game.
Very good game. I totally recommend it. It has a lot of original ideas that mix up really well. The way it is played, you explore, fight and move forward. Exploration: Similar to renowned explorers or FTL, but you need to think more where you want to go, and resources management is very important. You cant visit all locations, as there is an army moving behind you, as in FTL. During this exploration sometimes you get involved with factions, and what you do changes encounters. If you annoy a faction, they will charge more for services, fight you... Fight: A lot of tactical options. There is a morale system that allows you to kill only some enemies, so you need to decide which enemies have more priority. There are also many other options, like flanking, use of shields... Very fun all in all. The best part of the fight for me was the encounters where there is something else going on, like water on the place or regions that drain or give mana. For me the best part was seeing how my actions change the encounters, but the fights with extra effects are also very nice. At some point you can get abilities exclusive to the factions that you helped, and that is also very cool.
It plays a little bit like FTL, but you have to think more about which building you want to visit, as each one gives different resources. Probably will not have as much replay value as FTL but is a good game.
This game is really laggy during some battle scenes and it becomes unplayable and unpausable and must be closed. Walking during battles is frustrating sometimes because the characters choose to walk into other characters even when selecting what you think is the correct way around one. So many random battles. Not enough random concepts, it seems theres just a handful of ideas of what your gonna get when you enter something. I did a few playthroughs and found I could remember almost every potential outcome because there was so few. Many loading screens and lag issues. Noticing many crashing errors now as well Fun game, lots of potential but many issues make it frustrating
Very nice game. I like the "chasing army" system, where you must choose what to explore instead of going through everything. The real time combat with pause is nice as it can almost be played like either RTS or turn based combat game, depending on your preference. In this video I take a look at Last Days Of Tascaria, a rogue-lite RPG. The graphics are simplistic so I was dubious of the games quality but once I got into it I discovered how good the game play is. It has nice Strategic aspects and the story was impressive, with the ability to make friend or foe of various factions. It has multiple endings depending on your choices. As I played I was able to recruit more characters to my party but each new member needs to be fed which means more resources and another portal book to bring them to the next zone. All in all it's quite a captivating game that uses a simple GUI to play out an enjoyable RPG adventure. Take a look. I couldnt find much to like about this game. Its billed as a real-time-with-pause strategy RPG but the end result is... not so much. The graphics are cartoony and uninspired, animations are choppy and bizarre. Its entirely possible to have a great looking game despite minimal animation (ie Darkest Dungeon). Dialogue is bare bones and extremely simple, though this is in part due to non-native English speaking devs. Each location is a simple screen with an interaction and/or combat- so there is really not much to explore. Character development is pretty much nonexistant. You can only customize minally through gear and assigning a few skill points. Combat is from a sideview, rather than isometric or top down, which makes combat awkward- its hard to tell how you're aligned with enemies and if you're giving up flanking. Ultimately I guess this would be ok as a mobile game, but theres not much incentive to play on PC- theres just many other, better games out there.
I found it fun and engaging, specially the combat. I'm a big fan of "Choose your own adventure games" and I really like how they integrated this genre with a very tactical combat. I got this game in Early Access and I've seen how devs have enhanced things I complaint about, like polishing the story or improving music during combats. Pros: - Your decisions change the game - Replayability - Combination of attacks during combats Cons: - I'd like to be able to pick the other existing characters to start the game I think it is a game with interesting ideas and I really recommend it.
If you're into old school roguelites with some new interesting game mechanics, you're in for a treat!
Difficult roguelite game with some procedural elements. Exploration similar to renowned explores or curious expedition but more interesting as you must plan what things you need and each resource plays an important role. The combat is real time, but you can pause. It has some unique ideas, and is fun. The update rate during EA is good. Quite original and engaging.
