I'll just front load this review and come out swinging - I love this game. I really expected this one to be a bit of a throw away, you know, something you play for 15-20 minutes and leave it at that. I had my doubts about just how "survival horror" it would be, but I thought it looked interesting enough to give it a fair chance and man am I ever glad that I did. Unexpectedly, this is one of the best games I have played inspired by the Resident Evil 2 Remake formula. The gameplay wears its RE2R influence like a badge of honor, and although it's not as cleanly implimented as RE2R, it's so much better than you might expect. It's got limited inventory complete with item box, tense - if a little playful - atmosphere, some really nice puzzles, really nice soundtrack, multiple endings, boss fights, unlockable costumes, weapons and difficulties, and 3 mercenaries style free DLC missions. Visually, it's one of the most unique survival horror games out there, feeling sort of like a gamecube title in that regard, which isn't something you come across too much in the world of horror games. The overall aesthetic is kind of weird for this sort of game, but all very well realized and cohesive. What impressed me more than anything was the level design. My Lord - these devs really understand what makes a good survival horror puzzle box level that interconnects in unexpected ways. It may sound inflammatory, but I think this game may have the very best layout I have ever seen in a survival horror game! The temple consistantly unfolds in ways I didn't see coming but probably could have had I understood how well realized the location was, and the map UI (although ripped directly from RE2R) works great to aid navigation and familiarity. The lore here is fascinating and took me by surprise by being based on Gu Toxin - a subject I have studied quite a bit. Now, it is of course taken into the realm of the fantastical and blended with human experimentation but it was still really interesting to see such a unique but personally familiar concept used in my favorite genre of game. I appreciated how integrated into everything it was, with your weaponry and bullets being these weird toxic bug things and having to grind poisonous bugs together to create more ammo. The narrative is a little hard to fully pin down based on the wonky english translation, but it was pretty entertaining and fairly original nonetheless. Also of note - a key choice at a certain point in the game will determine not only the ending, but also a big change in your arsenal and what areas you are required to explore - very cool! Now, don't get me wrong, it has some pretty rough edges, so don't go into this expecting a perfectly smooth experience. The audio levels are bonkers, the english translation is hilariously bad (which I love - please, never "fix" it), I had a fair bit of stuttering but nothing too bad, and the aiming on controller is a bit on the sloppy side. Also the item box managment gets pretty out of hand with no clean way to sort it in the late game. But seriously, what this game does right really does outweigh the shortcomings. All that to say, I absolutely recommend this game for anyone interested in the weirder side of survival horror. I loved it and was really surprised by just how good it actually was.
