I haven't finished KUR, as the crippling problems resulted in frequent progress loss - I didn't want to waste any more time on such a mess. I estimate around 8-10 hours for an average run; replay value is low, as expected from the genre.

Is it worth buying? Even without the technical problems, I'd not recommend KUR unless you're a FPS fanatic waiting for their next fix (and in that case, you'll be disappointed anyway...). Characterized by a sassy attitude, at times reminiscent of the iconic Duke Nukem and his cheesy one-liners (nowhere near as good, though), this one-woman-army will stop at nothing to complete the mission, as she delves through ever-crazier situations and settings. Apart from the occasional, mostly humorous audio log or file, there won't be a lot of "meat" to the story or world-building themselves, apart from what you can eventually interpret - as expected from an old school shooter. Minimalist in level of detail and aesthetics, the setting tries to reference the old days visually, while modernizing itself with physics-based objects and a few more "newer" touches. However, even with its low-poly style the overall art feels inconsistent, generic, uninspired at most times, despite the occasional good touch.
General Gameplay
Aside from the shooting (which i'll cover later), the rest of your time will be spent running, sliding and wall-jumping your way through levels in the search of precious loot. Above all, credits briefcases are the main thing to be on the lookout for, scattered in stages, often in secret or anyway out-of-the-path areas. They will enable purchasing new weapons, ammo, health and various upgrades from respectively the vending machines and the augment tables - this is the only way to obtain (most) new murder tools, while ammo and health can be also found "in the wild", albeit sparingly. Depending on your performance, determined by time spent, secrets found and some other factors, you'll be awarded a certain number of credits at the end of each stage. Surely, the level design has to be praised, as it proposes fairly complex levels with at times multiple exits, large optional areas and more than a few Easter eggs. Looking for the next secret or shortcut is a decent diversion in-between shootouts. Your power boot will be paramount in unlocking paths like cracked walls, air vents and more, which can sometimes have you skip sections of a level to obtain better times. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2785651451
Combat System & Overall Balancing
The combat is what you'd expect from your run-of-the-mill shooter, in principle, but with a few additions unique to KUR. The power kick can be used to fling enemies around, break protections such as shields, other than a mobility tool used to wall-jump and super-jump if used correctly. While KUR wants to make this mechanic a centerpiece of combat and traversal, it fails in making it either reliable or enjoyable to use; kicking barrels, debris or enemies themselves feels clunky, inaccurate and unsatisfying - enemies kicked from great heights won't even suffer damage, or inflict any damage to any other foe they may collide with, disappointing. The weapon roster isn't that great, with a dozen weapons repeated in their functioning on some occasions (Pistols and Hellfire are literally the same weapon, only re-skinned, for example), without secondary fire-modes nor upgrades (except dual-wield for some, if that counts) and a gunplay that feels floaty, without the needed "oomph" you'd expect. The fact you can only buy weapons at exorbitant prices from vending machines, the same applies to most advanced ammo and medkits, makes most fights an "exercise of efficiency", as it's not hard at all to go bankrupt ammo-wise. I never played a shooter with a worse-designed ammo economy than this, as enemy health on the higher settings is totally over the moon compared to how much actual ammo / money you can find. Upgrades for both your boot and the character give a decent edge, as some are legitimately good like the dash invincibility or the double max-health threshold, however many others are useless gimmicks made to waste your hard-earned cash, like the "enemies drop ammo" passive which triggers rarely and drops miserable amounts of munitions. The lack of proper descriptions or stats like damage etc. in these skills further makes it a gamble to try them out - ah and they do cost energy (a resource dropped seldom around levels) to activate, be prepared to run out of it in a moment's notice, as it's not as common as you'd think. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2785651709
Further Considerations on Issues / Bugs
The staggering amount of bugs, that range from some wonky physics or enemies hitting you without making any animation, to getting softlocked out of the map or having doors that should open simply *not* do that due to broken programming - completely obliterates any and all enjoyment you may still salvage -after- the above-mentioned problems. I cannot fathom how this game could have been in Early Access for a considerable amount of time, and yet release in such a pathetic state. It's already mediocrely-designed as it is, but the bugs really drag it down to the darkest pits. Don't waste your time on this.
For an absolute laundry list of reasons, too numerous to mention here, KUR is not ready to leave Early Access. Glitched, bugged, unpolished, unrefined and often unenjoyable. I have broken the AI, skipped over entire stretches of level by exploiting the jump-kick, and been able to trigger glitches almost any time I notice the possibility. At the current asking price, KUR is asking to be stacked up against the likes of Dusk, Amid Evil…. even much more competitively-priced titles like the fantastic Arthurian Legends. It absolutely cannot be compared to these games and comes off looking even worse by being so. There is so much here to be excited about. KUR can, and someday may, be excellent. But never, ever in this current state.
This should still be in early access is this a joke. -Resolution changes didn't update for me the first time I played. -The scroll down menu that displays all resolution would "jump" ahead and I couldn't pick 1440p resolution. -The load game menu just opens up a File explorer and lets you figure which one of the files was your latest save. -Couldn't figure out how or where this game saves. -Bugs. -Bloom when using the flashlight is horrible you cant see sometimes. -I fell out of world at some point while exploring, the game didn't kill me it just left me to fall eternally, I had to load a save. -More inconveniences that i'm not bothered to report since I'm not their QA tester. -All this in 40 minutes. Sorry It's a pass for me.
I am baffled that this game is considered to be fully released or that it's apparently ended up there after receiving "feedback," because the only "feedback" I want to offer at this point is "start over from scratch." Rather than being gracefully low-fi like, say, Dusk, this feels like one of those misbegotten cash-in abominations from the early 3D era. Movement feels floaty and imprecise, weapons feel weak and unsatisfying, enemy AI is non-existent(sometimes they kill themselves when I'm not even in the area), the "boot jump" feels like a way to give me a worse double-jump for no good reason, the voice logs are extremely bad, the level design is either cramped hallways with no logic or big open outdoor areas(the latter are notably better, should have stuck with those). The soundtrack is nice, I actually like the soundtrack. Everything else about this game is a do-over.
Uggh regrets. Sometimes it's worth buying something in early access and sometimes it's not. Watching the game develop and improve can be a joy. Not in this case. Absolutely burned on this broken mess that's now allegedly finished and the dev appears to have done a runner. Level design, music and voice acting I thought were pretty solid. Everything else? Not so. Really hate the ammo economy as well as the boot and upgrade paths. Weapons don't feel right and the save system is still broken A potential hit, ruined by amateur development. I'd say broken beyond repair
I was excited to try Kur out now that the game is out of early access, but before even starting a new game I was already encountering bugs. This continued when I actually started to play and it only took me a couple minutes to decide the game was not in a playable state. I'm bewildered that the devs thought the game was in an acceptable state to enter full release, hell it feels like an alpha. To make matters worse, in the small amount of time I played, the gunplay was very bland. I will give it another try at some point in the future when it is hopefully in a better, more playable state.
Terrible first experience. Boring gunplay, the guns are not satisfying to use. The boot jump mechanics are clunky, not intuitive and need to be reworked, it doesn't feel right. There is an obnoxious heartbeat sound while low health, incredibly annoying I had to close the game because of it. The musics and sound effects are also pretty damn bad and annoying. When dying the game prompt you to press E to reload last save but it doesn't seem to work, go figure... I really don't like the graphics, I usually like retro styled graphics but here I don't know it all looks bad. Pressing options tab on main menu will sometimes automatically change the game resolution for some reasons. Ended up getting stuck at a 800*600 resolution, only way to fix was to restart the game. ♥♥♥♥ this game.
Early access rating 3/10.
Destined to be one of the great PC gaming experiences. Amazing music, gameplay, level design (except for
The school level, probably one of the weakest levels overall in the game.
, gunplay, voice-acting, humor, and puzzles (although I'd really
Love to see the physics puzzles worked on abit. Every time I did a physics puzzle I felt like I could never get something at the right angle and it was extremely janky overall.
Buy this game. Worth $20 easily and worth at least double that. Overall devs probably one of the best experiences I've had with an FPS since DUSK. Love the game, godspeed, and can't wait until it's out. (look into the audio bug with NPCs though so I can keep playing ;) For the devs and anybody who cares, spoilers and bugs below:
Bugs: FPS drops in a lot of places, especially the wierd necron-binary world after kicking open a chest. Map clipping into the void or having sections appear underwater when they are not (mostly during the fish thing level and the level before the engineer fight). My audio for a lot of the voice acting either doesn't play, gets cut out, or the volume randomly goes down then goes back to max after a bit. I just got to the underground base/train area and I can't get the dialogue to play. I may have to wait until this gets patched to continue playing as I really enjoy the plot and wish I could hear the dialogue with the NPCs. After the otis fight I had otis's health bar still at the station level and at times throughout the game text such as "red keycard aquired" would not leave my screen. My foot animation also got stuck when I was playing from time to time next to the gun model. My feedback so far: The spider hitboxes are hard to hit. My foot never hits and my bullets seem to miss alot. The same goes for some of the creatures when I used the sniper rifle. The spaceship area I had almost no ammo the entire time, maybe I just suck, but I loved the change in concept and direction and I wish I could fight the enemies. Some of the boss fights too like the maintenance core I had barely any ammo either even though I scoured the room. The ladders seem really janky. I can never climb them right and my character either ends up losing a ton of momentum or clipping into the wall abit and coming to a full stop. The same goes for leaving water to go onto a ledge. Some of the level layout can be really disorientating (the one leading up to the evil engineer guy where you're bouncing back between floors, and the school level mentioned above. Most of the early levels are amazing, and overall I absolutely love the level design, but as the game goes into the wierd necron-void/spaceship puzzle area I felt it hard to try to find out where I'm going and I backtracked alot. Every 0.2 seconds a necron-zombie spawned on me in the void. I would love to see it wait a second as I couldn't platform well when I had 10 guys spawn on me instantly (was funny, but still). Physics puzzle are janky especially on the spaceship level when you need to stack boxes and such to proceed. (very minor complaint) I saw the red button when the AI said hit it and didn't even hear the dialogue for the blue button until It cut into the loading screen. Maybe have them behind glass and you need to kick it or something so you hear the dialogue? Great boss fights!
Just beat this game, and I gotta say, this was one unique and fun experience. The game is a little clunky here and there but theres really not all that much jank. The developers are still patching and updating it. The gunplay and movement is where this game shines and excels. You got your basic arsenal of weapons for a FPS but the developers really went above and beyond making each weapon have its own Kur twist. I think the voiceacting was great. The story, I kinda get. The ending came suddenly, and that was kinda surprising in a bad way. The team that made this really kinda went all over the place with this game. Usually that is a bad thing, but in this game it is one of the attractive things about it. It kept me guessing and I never really knew what it was gonna throw at me next. Overall solid first outing for this developer. Hope to see more.
Yes, buy it. Is good :) I'm totally not biased
