Basic Information
Title: Kronos Status: Released Developer: UroboroStudio Publisher: UroboroStudio Genre: Role Playing Game Release Date: 3rd of February, 2017 Type: Singleplayer
General Impression
It’s hard for me to find redeeming points in Kronos’ favor. I usually have no such issues since most video games on Steam that I accept to review (I reject shovelware by principle) aren’t both overpriced and simplistic to the point of making browser-based “games”, noteworthy. This title made me reconsider what types of games I’m still willing to write about and even their future number since I’m starting to feel burned-out. If I were to make a tasteless pun, I’d say Kronos has been a waste of my time. Get it? Kronos, is a disambiguation of Chronos/Chronus, the personification of time in Greco-Roman mythology. No? Okay, the nerd will go sit quietly in a corner. Seriously, though. The dev team made very few efforts in polishing their first and so far only Steam project. Doesn’t seem like a promising debut at all, guys. For starters, who thought that pricing this thing at 7 dollars/euros was a bright idea? Kronos doesn’t even offer Trading Cards at the time of this writing. Don’t even get me started on the “storyline”, since generic doesn’t manage to covey it by proper term. I’m an RPG fan. I clocked more hours on classic 2D RPGs than some gamers have spent so far just shooting their way from one CS or COD map to another. I can appreciate spartan looks if they are coupled at least by a more than decent story/setting/characters. Kronos features none of these, to the point at which you may not overlook the literal slow pacing (the protagonist never heard of running, in his life) and the fact that the many rooms and arenas just seem recycled one after another. And what kind a twisted joke would that be, the case of a role playing game in which you don’t really get to role play? No classes to choose from and definitely no dialogue or NPCs to interact with. Weaponry, spell and foe diversity are a welcome sight, but the assets themselves are quite repetitive. Stylistically speaking, Kronos attempted minimalism, but failed. Imagine Prison Architect but with next to no charm, zooming in/out and a tenth of its asset variety. Not a pretty picture? My thoughts exactly. So what might this game have to offer that could still compel you to try it out? Some basic crafting mechanics, an inventory system and It features some puzzle segments that mercifully take your mind off the barebones combat sections. Never too hard or complex, you’ll still learn to respect any break from the same old rinse and repeat pattern of wacking melee weapons or shooting fireballs and arrows in the general direction of the enemy (and missing the target most of the time). Buying this game only once it’s bundled seems like a sound plan while purchasing it directly from the Steam Store at its current pricing would be a tragedy. Too many alternatives to mention them here. One thing is certain: Steam Greenlight really deserves to disappear and perhaps the floodgates of gaming mediocrity on Steam shall be sealed tight once and for all.
Strong Points
+ A few decent RPG mechanics. + Occasional puzzle segments. + Steam Achievements.
Weak Points
- Plain graphics and sounds. - Slow paced and repetitve. - Overpriced, given what it offers. - No Steam Trading Cards. 我们需要中文 We need Chinese 中国語は必要 Nous avons besoin de chinois Wir brauchen chinesisch Necesitamos chino potrzebujemy chin Precisamos de chinês Нам нужно китайский เราต้องการภาษาจีน Χρειαζόμαστε κινέζικα
Not a bad game, its very colorful Try to survive the locations with the help of a lot of weapons and special skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts48RgXz1Yk
While I can not 100% recommend the game right now, I definitely don't think it deserves a negative rating. The game is not great, but it's not terrible, as the developer for sure tried to make it as best as possible. Here's my full video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPqG-8uVrNo To sum up, the game has lots of content, but the execution is somewhat subpar.
Pros:

Clean UI
Stats are well thought-out and combat is not bad, the game is pretty deep, the character can also be customized (3 different skill trees)
Lots of different weapons/armors/items
Puzzles diversify the gameplay
Pretty low system requirements: if you have an old PC, the game might be just for you

Cons:

Graphics are not very good
Slow-walking speed, and you need to walk a lot
Combat is not very polished: lack of effects when hitting the enemies, some bounding boxes are pretty poorly defined (good luck shooting arrows through the doorway)
Crashed twice in ~ two hours of play
Poor English Translation (you can understand everything, but there are mistakes)
The slow pace and crashes were a deal breaker to me, but if they are not to you - there are lots of good content and ideas, but the execution is off. If the dev updates it - I'm definitely going to get back to it and I'll be glad to make an updated review.
It's simply not a quality game. As a free flash game it would probably have received lukewarm reviews, but paying $5.49 for this? The game is rather boring, movement and combat is slow, the art is not good and inventory management is needlessly tedious. It's just not that good and couldn't get me interested.
Ребята это не игра а не знаю что!!!! Интервейс не не понравился ибо он не удобный во врея замеса. Ну хватает функции пауза текстурки не очень P.S эта игра не стоит своих денег
Review - Kronos
Review brought you by Save Or Quit, visit us! ===
Rating: 55 / 100
Baby's First Hack 'n Slash ===
->> Purchase only if heavily discounted
===
Overview
Kronos is essentially a top-down, 2D hack 'n slash game with RPG elements. You will find yourself impersonating the son of a great alchemist, that recently disappeared while performing a dangerous experiment: with his last ritual, he wanted to save his son from the terrible things the breach created by the experiment unleashed. You will soon find yourself stranded in what a short time before was the huge castle of the Nightingale dynasty, which you and your father always served with honor, now transformed in a living hell, infested by hundreds of monsters and corrupted soldiers alike, all tainted by the darkness released from the experiment. It will be up to you, and you alone, to find a way to stop the horror and banish the evil back from where it came from. Narrative wise, the game is pretty simple and straightforward, as you can understand by the totally unoriginal and kind of stereotyped incipit, as for the rest of the game, for what i have seen, there will be very few dialogues, and other than some collectible tomes with some lore written in them, informing about the castle activities and other informations, there will generally be very little on the side of the story. you are there, go and stop the evil guys, not much else to say. This could be either a good or bad thing depending what kind of game you like. ===
Gameplay Analysis
You will start your adventure with a short tutorial to teach you the game basics, then you will be "free" to do whatever you want. The first thing i noticed after some time playing was that the game doesn't really allow you to go wherever you want, for example, there are four different areas you need to complete in order to retrieve certain items and progress the story, well the game decides for you what area you are starting from, but then where you go from there is up to you. Talking about quests, apart from the main one, there are none, all the things you need to do are only aimed to fullfill your main objective, there are no NPCs to talkto to get secondary missions, well there are no NPCs at all as far as i know. Not even vendors! The combat system, which is obviously important for this type of games, is very basic. You can choose between melee weapons(sword, mace, axe), ranged weapons (bow), and magic spells. The character will obviously level up and be able to collect loot around the world, each level will grant you a point to spend in one of the three very basic and short skill trees, each featuring ten skills. Melee combat is very simplistic, with an idle standard attack type for all weapons, differing only in range and speed depending what weapon you use, no dodge, no parry, no counter systems, no backstabs, forget all of this, you just bash enemies, and that is not necessarily bad, but might left disappointed players who look for a deeper experience. Ranged combat with bows is alright, it is what you would expect from it, you can use special arrows to change your shots effects, you can either find or craft them at an alchemy table. Magic combat is what i found being the worst, with the mana regen rate being very low and spells having to be used in large quantities to defeat all the enemies present. Also, spells can be click-spammed, most of them anyway, and this is never good for balance reasons. Skill trees are very simplistic too, giving out basic bonuses like X more percentage of health, speed, mana, or at most some additional effects to our hits like the chance of transmitting a negative effects to all surrounding enemies near the one we hit. On this side, Kronos does not impress and stays on basic levels, the minimum. This could be good if you look for a simple experience or are new to action RPGs, but will probably disappoint if you already are in the genre. One special mention has to be made to whoever made the level design, he really liked traps, because literally every inch of the whole map is clustered with them! You need to be very careful at all times or you will be damaged by all sorts of traps, both hidden or in sight, with no way to disable or destroy them, this is really really bad because you will constantly be harrassed by traps everywhere you go. A bad game design choice for sure. If you happen to die, the game will load the last save you made and you will continue from there. Saving is possible only in specified locations with magic books in them. Dying also, for some reason, makes all the enemies on the map respawn again, problem is some enemy spawns are where save books are, so what happens if you save with very few hit points, then die, and respawn in a room filled with enemies? This is exactly what happened to me, and it is not good at all. Another bad game design choice. You also will have the chance of collecting various ingredients from enemies and loot crates, and use them in alchemical tables, found around the map. Here you will be able to crreate special arrows, potions and other useful items for your adventure. Main problem with the gameplay is the lack of depth, everything is too simplistic, there is no stat leveling, no skill synergy, no definite class-building, no spacializations of any relevance, skills are very basic, it is not recommended to anyone looking for a deeper experience. ===
Technical Analysis
The game uses a basic 2D engine, featuring hand drawn sprites and effects. The art style is well, very simplistic mostly, people are portraited as elleiptic shapes with a circular head and two circle-shaped hands, the decor and environments are drawn alright but again look very simple, there is no real artistic depth in anything, nothing is ugly either it's just... basic, i don't find a better adjective. The engine is alright, runs well, does the job, but has problems with collisions and hitboxes, especially on narrow passages and doors, enemy hit detection is uncertain, the absecne of any enemy hitting effect really takes away the "feeling" of hitting something, you simply see the enemy stagger away a little with no visible consequences apart damage numbers popping. A major technical issue is that enemies probably use a basic AI follow script, therefore you can literally aggro and kite around huge mobs of enemies, only to dispatch them all with a few well placed spalls or special arrows. If you don't die for the traps before. Talking of balance, i played the highest difficulty and there is more than enough challenge that's for sure, enemies will stomp you if you ar enot very careful in what you do. Absence of passive Hp regen adds to the challenge, but may be crippling since there is a finite number of potions that can be crafted or found, and the enemies respawn on every death, so do the math and you will soon know that if you die too much there won't be enough resources for you to get by and advance in the game. This WILL likely happen. UI is not so good either, i found it very clunky to have different menus for equipment, character status and skills, instead of a single menu maybe with divided tabs, inventory management is sufficent but could have been done in a better way, you will find yourself scrolling a lot since the view space is limited but the invenory is, presumably, bottomless. Also there are no vendors so why piling all the loot? ===
Conclusions
Kronos is a sub-par, barely sufficend action rpg in all fields. Delivers the basic core experience of ARPGs but has many lackings and most of all a lack of DEPTH. For the price range we talk about, it is suggested if discounted and if you want something very basic, or maybe if you are new to the ARPG genre this may be a nice start, but otherwise i suggest moving on to more complex products.
This game reminds me brilliant games from NES. "Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves" and "Willow". But the point is - Kronos is boring. Boring map, terrible music and sounds, boring story, no adventure, boring puzzle, bad invectory, too much drop, too slow gameplay, boring... boring... BUT. I wish to play and have fun, because I love this concept. For autor - please, try more I beg you! Maybe just look at Willow and RB-Prince of thieves.
