About

Korea. IL-2 Series takes you to a pivotal moment in aviation history—a time when jet engines changed the skies forever. During the Korean War, the piston-engine aircraft of a bygone era clashed with the first jet fighters.
For the first time in the series, gamepads are supported in addition to joysticks and HOTAS control systems.
With a massive combat map, authentically recreated aircraft, and a well-crafted balance between simulation and accessibility, every dogfight is brought to life.
Become an ace, fight in legendary machines, or aim even higher and become a regiment’s commander. Lead squadrons, plot routes across the combat map, and issue orders to turn the tide of history. In the skies of Korea, you can be anyone: from a rank-and-file pilot to a strategist shaping the outcome of the campaign.
For the first time in the IL-2 series, full controller support has been implemented.

The aircraft of the Korean War have been recreated based on actual blueprints, historical photographs, flight manuals, and other archival materials. There are eight* aircraft at your disposal.
*Please note La‑11 and F‑84E Thunderjet are available in the Premium and Deluxe editions, or as a separate DLC.

Every instrument in the cockpit is fully functional and reflects the state of the aircraft’s systems in real time. You will be aiming and firing just as pilots did 75 years ago.

The game takes place on the largest map in the series' history, covering an area of over 200,000 square kilometers. The Korean Peninsula has been recreated based on historical maps and documents from the 1950s. All significant historical landscape changes have been accounted for, including reclaimed coastal areas and shoreline changes.
The map features dozens of airbases with historically accurate layouts, hundreds of settlements, and strategic objectives such as ports, dams, and transport hubs.

The Home by Christmas campaign tells the story of Captain Jack Russell, who in 1950 secures a transfer to a combat unit fighting in the Korean War to fulfill his dream of becoming a jet ace.
You will fly 15 historically accurate combat missions, recreated from the combat logs of the 8th Fighter-Bomber Wing and the memoirs of its pilots.
The campaign reflects unique challenges of the war's early months: jet aircraft could not operate from small forward airstrips, so some pilots had to temporarily return to piston-engined machines. Over the course of the campaign, you will fly both the F-51 Mustang and the F-80 Shooting Star jet.

In Career mode, you will act as an air regiment commander, managing personnel and overseeing aviation logistics.
It is up to you to decide whether to take to the skies or focus on strategic tasks. As a regiment commander, you will maintain combat readiness, plan operations, and reinforce your units.

Korea features a highly detailed damage model for both aviation and ground objects. Aircraft, including strategic bombers, as well as ground vehicles, trains, and ships, receive damage corresponding to the nature of the hits sustained.
Every object reacts realistically to collisions, crashes, and combat damage, taking into account mass, speed, and the point of impact, directly affecting the behavior of the vehicle and the outcome of the battle.

In this new mode, you can examine each aircraft, ground vehicle, and naval vessel in detail. Explore the models, learn about their development and combat history, inspect aircraft cockpits, and compare technical specs, including detailed performance charts.
Your own personal museum, open anytime—a true treasure for anyone passionate about aviation and military history.

For the first time in the series, you can leave the cockpit and walk around the airfield where your regiment is based.
Animations of the people—pilots, soldiers, and civilians—were created using motion capture (MOCAP) technology, ensuring natural and lifelike movement.
Full VR support via OpenXR and OpenVR.
Accessibility: The game features detailed systems management, but there’s no need to memorize engine start-up sequences—you can take off and engage immediately.
Hardware support: From controllers to desktop joysticks and professional HOTAS systems.

I thought I'd give it ten or so hours before I can make any sort of review. Let's just preface this by saying that I am no way a hardcore flight simmer, I've dabbled a few hours here and there over a few years and probably have less than 100 hours in all sims total (DCS, Falcon BMS, Il-2). I'm a busy dad, on a very lucky week I can get one-two hours on a few days. It looks and sounds gorgeous, plays really well and feels very good. The multiplayer is where it's at; I spent maybe five hours offline just learning the game and did a few sorties in the career, while it's "okay" I can't really recommend the game fully in this state if you are sure you'll never go offline. I've been having a blat on the Combat Box PvP server. Bugs? I mean, yes, probably? It's difficult to know in these sims what is a bug or not. What is plainly obvious is that the AI needs work, and I mean a lot. The voice lines too, they are very bad (at least for the Americans). I've not had any game breaking issues though, I'll update this review if I play more career and if that is just broken. I recommend it overall though, as long as I'm having fun (which is what matters) I will recommend this game, with the caveat above that multiplayer is the superior experience. I don't see myself spending most of my time offline honestly.
I've played a lot in IL-2 Stalingrad and other expansions, and I'm glad to see the series continue.

What i liked

I liked that a huge amount of work went into UX/UI, making it much easier now to find and set up devices.
Presets for many automatically detected devices have been added to the game, which is cool.
The museum and description for each aircraft is a really cool feature that lets you study each machine in detail.
Exams for each aircraft are also a great addition that helps you get used to each plane individually.
Steam achievements for passing exams and other victories - I love stuff like that.
The ability to leave the aircraft and walk around on foot. This opens up opportunities for more immersive gameplay if this feature is developed further.
modern features such as DLSS, FSR (we need also Frame Generation feature)

What I didn't like as much:

No native Tobii Eye Tracker 5 support (you have to hassle with setting up OpenTrack)
micro stutters when a lot of planes in the air, game shows 60-100 FPS but it feels that game engine struggle, need improvments in multithreading
Great sim, lots of fun, awesome campaign. I'm enjoying not having to learn a million buttons to fly modern sims, but it's fun to fly something faster than prop planes. Bad reviews are mostly poor boys complaining about the price. Sims are a niche market...anything niche costs extra. Most flight simmers already have many dollars invested in their rigs and won't mind another $80. Can't afford it, get another hobby as there are plenty of arcade type flying games out there cheaper. I'll pick the extra DLC planes up on sale down the road as there is plenty here to keep me busy.
I really wanted to give this a negative review because of 1Cs predetory pricing which i think has scared many potential customers away and their DLC model (releasing 2 aircraft as DLC on the first day that were always advertsied pre release as part of the game). However I cant, game is great - if you have the cash to pay for it. It will only get better with updates. Pros: Controller support is awesome, graphics, accessability, general gameplay and emmersion are great and a massive step up from Great Battles. Really good foundation for what will be an awesome game. Career mode and the ability to select your own missions as well as the task editor is way better than before. Huge replayability. You can tell a lot of effort has gone into this Constructive feedback: Content a bit lacking for price tag. The fact is that there are only 3 truly new aircraft in the base game with the rest being things you would have already flown before if you played Great Battles. AI is still a bit dumb at the moment and will just enter into turn battles they cannot win. I feel as though I lose more planes by my wingmen crashing into eachother than to enemy action. Non historic mission types - Mig Alley, which should be the centrepiece of this game does not even exist in career mode. A few bugs but in my 37 hours but not many and certainly nothing that ruins the game. I hope all the above will be fixed in future updates. Overall the game has my recommendation if you have a spare $113 AUD. If not, I would wait until it has been fleshed out with updates or is on sale - otherwise you may be disappointed for the price tag.
TLDR: I recommend the game if you're a fan of the other IL-2 games, Korea is an updated version of BOX. Multiplayer is currently the strongest part of the game, and the career mode is entertaining, HOWEVER the AI absolutely lets it down. I think it might be worse then BOX in some aspects. If you're a single-player focused flyer, I'd wait and see if they really do improve the AI. Positives: Visually stunning, both aircraft and the map are leagues above what you might find in some peers. The flight characteristics especially feel solid and i've seen many real-world pilots praise it. The documentation that come with aircraft is also wonderful, the museum is full of detail, but the fluff for the history buffs is nicely separated from the operational information. Ground pounding feels very good. I've always been a fan of fighter bombers and if you are too, you'll really like Korea. It's one of it's strongest points in my opinion. Multiplayer is fantastic, and dynamic campaign servers will make it even better. A small thing, but it is VERY cool to be able to get out of the aircraft and walk around. Especially in multiplayer when you can all huddle up around your planes pre-mission. Super immersive. The command aspects and squadron management in career mode is an awesome addition. Customizing aircraft, loadouts, keeping on top of logistics while planning operations reminds me a little of B-17 Mighty Eighth. I also really enjoy the expanded radio functionality that we have access too. However the AI do let that down. Negatives: AI, if you're mostly a single-player career player like myself, you'll find the AI to be extremely disappointing. Bombers circle the target without dropping bombs until they run out of fuel. AI will often collide with each other or the ground. The old 'lazy-turn' is back, and dogfighting against them is dull and predictable. I would love to see AI of the same quality as Wings over Flanders Fields. The Developers have said they'll work on it, so I have my fingers crossed because it needs MASSIVE improvement. English Radio Voices are terrible. Another -1 for single-player focused players. Dialogue is nonsensical and choppy. I personally don't mind the robotic sounding voices, but not when they can't even speak properly. A notable instance is 'Red 3' is spoken as 'Redberry' (I can't comment on the Korean, Russian or Chinese voices) A good reference for voice acting would be in 'Gunner Heat PC'.
Game is incomplete. I changed one control and undid hours of progress with controls. When you can't even get the control system right after 25 years of game development its pitiful to say the least. Theres no way to undo whatever it is i did maybe it was the amount of controls present a glitch whatever it maybe its a $100 game. What is this slop? IL-2 1946 functions better and that was made 20 years ago. This game needed more time and care that was not present. The difficulty system sucks the two hours i've wasted on this joke of a game was just trying to figure out how to fly. The controls that were supposedly working were in fact not. This is sad to see. What a great idea for a game Korea the untouched era and they just pissed on it and ruined it. Pathetic devs. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pathetic.
