Basically "We got Mario at home", for your wife or girlfriend, whom likes to play bottle sorting games on her smartphone. Made to keep her busy when she's not cooking or cleaning, and sits on the couch, next to you watching telly.
Went in expecting to play a somewhat brain off, colorful, chill 3D platformer. And while it is that, it honestly feels really good to control and there's some obvious level design that allows you to show off advanced movement. It's a video game equivalent to an animated children's movie that's also made to be enjoyable for the parents watching. It's not a 10/10 masterpiece that all need to play, but if you're looking for a cute 3D platformer, you have to start here.
Had a lot of fun with it, you can get some good times by taking advantage of the roll and jump , and while it may be hard at first when trying to control the momentum and getting a handling when turning when you successfully do it it feels great All the levels felt like they never overplayed their welcome so and each felt distinct enough to not feel repetitive And after playing Summer in Mara i liked seeing the characters again
I love tropical settings, and this platforming adventure nails those vibes perfectly! Lots of movement potential and, on top of that, time trial challenges for each level (always a plus for me). Exploring the sea is fun, the challenge is light but satisfying, the characters are cute and Koa herself has several clothing options to unlock. Good stuff!
All your other games have portuguese language. Why this one doesnt?
Very interesting game. I ran across this game after watching the recent trailer for Bel's Lament. I wanted to do a little bit of sleuthing about Chibig Studios. Out of their games, Summer in Mara I had heard of. I passed because despite how cute I found the artstyle, I just do not care for farming games. I also had heard of Mika and the Witch's Mountain but had not looked into it at all. But Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara stood out as something worth looking into. Koa is a great game, and surprisingly well-polished. On its surface it seems like a fairly simple, perhaps even juvenile, platformer. In fact, I have noticed a lot of reviews on this site criticize its simplicity. I beg to differ. Koa is an adorable little package that's approachable for less-experienced gamers but somehow still engages me, an experienced gamer with niche taste (though I'll admit I'm not the best at 3D platformers). Most gameplay consists of using only two buttons. You can jump and run. But there's a surprising amount of complexity that they were able to derive from this. If you jump while running, you do a long jump. But if you hit the run button right after hitting the ground after jumping, then you roll. The roll turns into a run after a while, but if you jump again during the roll phase, then you do a longer jump. You get to keep the momentum of the long jump as you continue running, but only for a little while, so momentum becomes a resource that you need to constantly be refilling. All of this culminates in the game being a genuinely excellent speed game. I was taken completely aback by how elegant the moves are. There's a complex state machine full of risk and reward that challenges you to do better at every turn. I'm honestly shocked at how few people have mentioned this at all. There is only one bad level in the game, and that is the one that turns into a slow-moving autoscroller. For that level only, this entire design philosophy is broken wide open and the game becomes a slog until you can get back to speedrunning. Regarding the level design methodology, I was interested to see that Koa does not subscribe to just one lineage of 3D platformers. There are set camera positions that flow through different states like Super Mario Galaxy, but the levels themselves remind me more of Crash Bandicoot in the types of platforming they request of you, while the way that collectables are hidden throughout the levels reminds me of the Splatoon series. There are also some auto-runner levels that invoke Sonic. Combining multiple inspirations together, Chibig Studios has crafted something truly unique and worthy of attention. The levels are not designed perfectly. There are some... interesting interactions with the collision, and some jumps are too precise to consistently make. It wouldn't bother me nearly as much if the game didn't ask whether you want to switch to relaxed mode every ten deaths. When I die to weird collision and then get asked if I need to make the game easier, it grates (This menu can also softlock the game if it triggers after you click the Restart button). As noted by other reviews, the writing is not great. The characters have all known each other for years yet still talk to each other so robotically. If you have not played the prequel game, Summer in Mara (like I have not), then you will be especially lost. As Chibig is a Spanish studio, I plan to replay this game in Spanish to see if the writing is any better in the studio's native language. The story has almost no substance. It tries to be cozy but still have impactful stakes, and fails to capture either atmosphere completely. Interactions with the bosses typically take the form of a played-out conversation where Koa tells them to stop doing bad things and they say okay. Then the game culminates in a completely unearned "everyone is happy" ending. As a final note, if you buy the I <3 Mara shirt (the second unlockable cosmetic in the game) the character gets cool shades and goes from an A-tier character design to an S-tier character design.
Volver a Mara siempre es un buen plan <3
