This is a simple action game in which you can switch between a knight and a wizard at any time and defeat enemies that appear along the path. While their main attacks, a close combat sword for the knight and ranged fireballs for the wizard, do not consume energy, the six skills unique to each character do. Fortunately, recovering energy is very easy, since you only need to hit enemies. Although both characters work toward the same goal, they do not share experience from defeated enemies. It is best to decide which one you want to focus on from the start and stick with it until the end. The reason for this is that when a character levels up, it gains one skill point that can be used to upgrade one of the hero’s six skills. Each skill can be upgraded five times, and each upgrade costs only one point, with the cost never increasing. While skill points are not shared, gear collected in the field is. Even this system is very simplified, because both characters can equip anything, such as a wizard using a sword. Each piece of gear fits into its appropriate slot and increases character stats such as damage, health, critical chance, and more. If you find something you do not need, you can sell it and use the money in a shop that is always available and allows you to buy various potions and healing items. Each stage is a small area that you can progress from after defeating all enemies. After a few normal stages, you must face a boss. However, the entire experience is quite short and poorly balanced. There are only a few pieces of gear with preset stats, so nothing is randomized. This lack of balance becomes clear because it is very easy to become overpowered. When an enemy dies, you can keep attacking the corpse to fill the level up bar until the body disappears. If you do this with a boss, you can gain a large number of skill points, allowing you to upgrade every single skill. After that, you simply spam your preferred ability and clear every stage with no real challenge. At the end, all you receive is a simple “victory” message, with nothing else as a reward.
Knight and Code presents itself as a distinctive action-RPG built around the unusual contrast between pixel-art protagonists and a richly rendered three-dimensional fantasy world. This stylistic choice immediately sets it apart from many indie entries in the genre, creating a visual tension that makes the heroes feel almost like outsiders wandering through a vivid realm painted in lush colors and soft lighting. The world design often carries the atmosphere of a storybook landscape, and the combination of retro simplicity and modern scenery gives the game a charmingly handcrafted identity. Even before its mechanics fully reveal themselves, the aesthetic alone forms a strong first impression that hints at a thoughtful creative direction, even if the overall execution struggles to keep pace with the promise of its visual style. At the heart of the experience is its two-character system, which allows players to switch between a knight focused on defense and melee engagement and a mage built around ranged magical attacks. Both heroes feature their own six-skill trees, encouraging gradual specialization as experience and skill points accumulate. Equipment and loot are shared between the two, making gear management more convenient and preventing the frustration common in RPGs where characters must be individually outfitted. Combat blends basic attacks that cost no resources with more powerful skills that rely on energy management, giving moment-to-moment encounters a rhythm of bursts and cooldowns. In theory, this dual-protagonist structure should provide tactical flexibility, allowing players to change approaches depending on enemy types or the demands of a particular stage. However, once the game begins to unfold, the cracks in its balance and progression become more noticeable. Experience is earned quickly, and due to an oversight in how post-defeat hits are handled, it is possible to continue striking fallen enemies—bosses included—to fill the level bar far beyond what the developers likely intended. This flaw allows players to unlock most or even all upgrades prematurely, trivializing the difficulty curve and removing the sense of steady growth that action-RPGs rely on for pacing and tension. Once overpowered, the player can simply repeat the same high-damage abilities to sweep through subsequent stages, which diminishes both the strategic appeal of character switching and the significance of the skill progression system. Another limiting factor is that while items are shared, experience is not. This forces players into an early commitment to either the knight or the mage, as attempting to maintain both evenly often leaves one underdeveloped. As a result, the freedom suggested by having two protagonists is narrower than it first appears. Instead of encouraging dual playstyles, the system inadvertently pushes players into favoring a single build, reducing variety in late-game encounters. Combined with the already shallow difficulty curve, the inability to meaningfully rotate between characters further compresses the game’s sense of variety and ambition. The structure of stages themselves follows a straightforward pattern, leading toward a final boss confrontation that arrives with little fanfare and concludes abruptly. Upon victory, the game offers no meaningful post-game content, no extended narrative epilogue, and no additional rewards or modes that encourage replayability. For a game marketed with RPG elements, the absence of a concluding payoff or even a simple narrative wrap-up makes the adventure feel incomplete. The journey ends not in triumph but in a sudden stop, as if the framework for a larger experience was laid down but never fully expanded. Despite these shortcomings, the crafted world remains the strongest aspect of Knight and Code. The contrast between retro heroes and a lush fantasy environment is memorable, and the visual presentation can be pleasant enough to carry players through its short runtime. For those drawn to atmospheric worlds, minimalist storytelling, and light, casual action-RPG combat, the game offers a brief but aesthetically appealing diversion. Its low price point also softens the impact of its limitations, making it a potential curiosity for players seeking something unusual rather than mechanically deep. Ultimately, Knight and Code feels like a prototype for a larger concept—a game with clear artistic intent and an interesting mechanical foundation, but one that lacks refinement, balance, and narrative payoff. Its charm lies in its presentation and its simplicity, but its staying power is undermined by shallow progression and an abrupt conclusion. For players who approach it with modest expectations, it may provide a pleasant, visually charming interlude. Those seeking a more robust or long-lasting action-RPG experience may find that it leaves more potential unexplored than realized. Rating: 6/10
