Medium, felt similar to Person161's negative review The first half was very boring; none of the major characters were even remotely interesting to me. Most of the time, none of the decisions were what I actually wanted to make. The second half and the background reveal were interesting enough. However, the ending really left me baffled. After completing the game, all I felt was emptiness, like I had no idea what I got from the experience.
I am an avid reader and love romances, this is a really lovely game that reads like an interesting book! It has romantic aspects to it though I wouldn't say that it's the most forward in them, it's more of a fantasy mystery. Needless to say I loved the game. I look forward to replaying to see how the foxes change and the choices matter. Id love more spice but that's just me, as I like spicy romances. 9/10
I really enjoyed this novel. As others have said, there's more to it than just what you see here on the page. I have seen it compared to Doki Doki: Literature Club but I'd say-
this is not a meta-narrative. This novel is psychological, but everything that happens is within its narrative universe.
For that reason I still recommend it, even as someone who avoided DD:LC. I enjoyed it to the point that I'm seeking out the author's other works to read next, which I think is about the best recommendation you can get to in favor of reading this.
I have mixed feelings on this "choose your own adventure" type story, but ultimately, I recommend it with caveats. If that's all you need to know, move on. If you want more, keep reading. Minor spoilers mostly for concept and design. My first play-through I took my time and made the choices that I wanted to make (within limits, see below). I found the twists interesting, the design well-thought, the story pretty well written, and enjoyed it immensely. First play-through, I would have given this a solid "A". My second time, I decided to play very differently. I made a character concept in my head for the MC, and I made my choices in line with that concept. This is where the concept and design choices negatively impacted my experience, albeit in a limited way. Spoiler for concept and design
From a concept perspective, there are entities in the game world that have the power to change reality as well as force actions upon you. This makes sense in context, and I thought that the narrative handed this well. However, that allows for the use of a potentially lazy tool in writing these types of stories; namely, all paths can be made to branch off momentarily (the illusion of choice) and then combine back into a single narrative thread. This makes for easier path development, but it means that ultimately, not only does the MC have only the illusion of choice, so too does the player. This is not apparent at all the first time you play, and impossible not to notice the second time. This degrades the ultimate experience, but in spite of this, I still enjoyed the ride.
Did I like this? Yes. Will I play it again, in spite of it's flaws? Very likely. So, for good storytelling, and a fox that lives rent-free in my heart when he deigns to visit me; I recommend this to those who like a good story--at least once.
Excellent interactive fiction. The story started off a bit slow, but the 2nd half had me on the edge of my seat. I could tell the author had an appreciation for Japanese culture and the lore of the kitsune. While romance was present, I prefer much more romance, but that's just a personal bias. 9/10.
Stayed up 'til 2am. Watched the stat screen lose its mind. Saved Todd. Smooched an adorable nurse. Good times.
The only reason i am giving it a negative review is because i was lied to on the store page of what this game was going to be. Don't get me wrong, for what it was trying to go for it was amazing, however. I bought this game because i thought it would be a story on dealing with a fox girl living in your home and how you reacted to it. Instead this story goes into doki doki Literature Club territory with how it plays out, if i had known that i would have skipped this game. If you do like that sort of hectic 4th wall breaking realty changing game, then you will love this game. If you just want a simple slice of life choose your own adventure game, i would stay away from this mind ♥♥♥♥ of a game.
I'm really not sure about this game. I love IF games, but this one hasn't grabbed me. It doesn't mean its bad, its well written, but its themes I normally avoid and I probably will never finish the game. I did not like the themes of mental illness, hallucinations, and conspiracy theories when my character get lost, which is where I ended up, going around in circles because I could not remember what had happened earlier in the game. However for others this may be the perfect fit and I won't neg something just because it does not suit me if its well written and I don't notice obvious editorial errors. Your mileage will hopefully be different from mine and you will enjoy the game.
If I had one complaint (and I only have one) about this game, it would be that the description doesn't do it justice. I was blown away by nearly every aspect of Kitsune. I got it on sale, but it's well worth the full price and I'd buy it again if I had money to throw around. Good stuff.
