King's Quest™ Collection

Saying King's Quest is the best series ever because it was the first game you ever played is like saying that car without the wifi or anti-lock breaks is still the best thing on the road. Because it is.. bi*tches. All hail the King!

I really want to recommend this collection, as I have so many fond memories of this series, I played EVERY SINGLE ONE as a child, (even the disastrous King's Quest 8.) The collection keeps the King’s Quest games playable, but that’s about all it does. The launcher is barebones, the games run on an outdated version of DOSBox, and there’s no effort to modernize or celebrate the series. It feels like a quick repack from 2006 that never got the update it deserves. A legendary franchise presented in the most forgettable way possible. Pros: -Great Puzzles -Great Retro Art -Music and Aesthetic still intact But that's the thing, the only pros to these games are because the original games were so solid, there's been very little effort to make them accessible on modern systems, or to add anything to improve the QoL for new players, or old players on newer hardware. Cons: -No proper UI or modern launcher -Uses a very old DOSBox build -Poor default display scaling and blurry visuals -No achievements, extras, or quality-of-life features -Minimal Windows 10/11 support -Feels unpolished and outdated for a paid collection

This was my first video game as a kid WAY back in 1984. It set the course for my life to not only become a developer, but a life-long gamer.

Great classic games, strangely though it is missing king's quest 8. I imagine it is because they can't get it to run or something. I also noticed that the portraits in king's quest 6 were different than I remember, which is weird, I have a very different recollection of what it looks like. King's quest 5 will also still crash right at the end, did it in the old sets of games too. Favorite to least favorite in this set is as follows King's quest 5: One of the first I played, but the best of the bunch King's quest 6: The story is great and the multiple endings made this really great King's quest 1: The classic start, you have to love the beginnings King's quest 4: I really liked this one for some reason. As a kid I was able to figure most of it out on my own. There was no weird logic in any of the parts and it flowed nicely. Stupid breaking shovel though was the worst. King's quest 7: The art direction bothered me to be honest, there were some parts that frustrated me to no end as a child as well probably ruining my experience with this as it ranks much higher on other's lists King's quest 3: This one is far too hard and the timer is killer. Pixel perfect movement is necessary, but when you succeed you feel accomplished. It is not intuitive in the least though making it by far the most difficult King's quest 2: This one was just kinda boring, and the pixel perfect movement was cranked up to a billion in this one. It just wan't that fun. Hey, not all of them can be perfect. Also the fact that the bridge gives you points every time you cross it but breaks if you cross it too much screwed me the first time playing. There are some remakes of kings quest 1-3 by a great company ADG interactive. I liked their 3rd installment making that game play much more like kq5. I loved that remake as it made a lot of more sense. They sometimes put things in their games that is completely unnecessary but overall good. Would love to see all of these remade but I think they tried that and it didn't go as well as they wanted it to, meaning they didn't make as much money as they wanted. I mean it is owned by Activision now and that is just the worst. Activision just lets anything good die, I mean I haven't seen anything from blizzard that even looked good to play as of late. It is just sad. I hope one day the whole king's quest falls into public domain and someone who really liked them picks them up and makes great remakes. Edit: My overall rating for this bunch of games is a 9/10, some were less, but they are great games.

King's Quest 7 is literally one of the best point and click adventure games I've ever played

Life isn't complete for a Point and Click fan without this.

I bought King's Quest V on CD when it came out. It was one of the earliest games to feature mostly spoken dialogue.

the series that changed my life forever, true story i was maybe 7 when i saw sir graham standing by that castle on a monitor in the front yard of a yard sale with my grandparents in 85 or 86 it was an IBM PCjr original edition KQ and up till then the only adventures i knew were Pitfall and berserk etc on my atari, i had to have it and i been a true gamer ever since, i will say it is a daventry sized travesty that there are no achievements for this!

Outstanding, classic games. Love to see them still being maintained and able to run on modern systems.
