Gorgeous writing, beautiful art, and very compelling worldbuilding. Great stuff and want to see more from this creator for sure
As a sort of visual novel doubter, I've been totally swayed by what SnowBound has to offer. This concise and carefully-considered experience plays by the book and argues strongly for the basic appeal of the medium - like a closely-directed graphic novel, it pulls you into a narrative that progresses cautiously with every mouse click. The soundtrack is phenomenal, and the overall sound design is immediately immersive and impressive. I especially applaud the decision to feature largely monochromatic visuals, which of course compliment the story's snowy environs. Beautiful work!
Beauty and the Beast meets SCP horror. Snowbound puts a twist on the story of the first game, and weaves a dynamic between the two main characters that is more complex and intimate. If the first Kindred is about empathy under strained circumstances, Snowbound is about trust and vulnerability in the face of potential danger. The art is gorgeous, cleverly using texture and light to create an atmospheric experience with a limited greyscale palette. The trademark twists on the visual novel medium are there, and the choices have even more nuance. Branching paths, unlockables, and secret endings make this experience very replayable. I enjoyed my time with it a lot. Can't wait for the next one!
Snowbound is the second of the developer's Kindred Universe visual novel games, which I played after completing - and being greatly impressed by - the first game (Subject 6244). I feel that the richness and clarity of Snowbound are greatly enhanced by prior knowledge of the back story in the first game, and would urge new players to complete both games in this order. This game introduces a new character, a young woman fleeing the violent destruction of her village; but will she escape one danger only to run into a worse one? Southbound takes place in a slightly larger "world" setting than the deliberately claustrophobic Subject 6244, but both are equally dark, dystopian, and atmospheric, with small but important glimpses of humanity in the face of fear & oppression. There are multiple choices and pathways, which lead to different endings (and achievements). As with the first game, Snowbound uses excellent artwork, dialogue, music & sound effects to flesh out its bleak world. I got Snowbound for about UK £1.99 (as part of a 20% discounted bundle with Subject 6244) and, given my play time and the (grim) pleasure I had with this game, I have no concerns about its value for money.
Snowbound is just as good if not better than the previous entry in the Kindred Series. Exploring all the different paths is very intriguing in how cold or warm the player character's relationship with the mysterious man can be. There's a lot of mysteries to uncover, and cool places I never thought the story was going to go. I very much enjoyed my time with this one!
