An actual hidden gem. The key hunting is way overboard, but if you have the patience this is a unique, exploration-based shooter. The enemies are pretty similar and there are like half as many guns as there should be, but the story, environment, graphics, sound, atmosphere, secrets that make sense and cheesy FMV cutscenes are all memorable and fun to experience the whole time.
Nightdive Studios Killed It Again! Great Remaster!
I had never even heard of this game growing up, but if I had played it back then, I probably would have loved it just as much, if not more than I do now. This appears to be another solid remaster from Nightdive Studios. You can even disable the HD textures if you want a more authentic retro look, but I prefer the HD version. What really surprised me was the use of FMV throughout the game. FMV was everywhere in 90s light gun games, but I had no idea there was an FPS that used it this extensively. It's a weird combination, but it works, and it's still pretty cool even today. The island is packed with an absurd amount of enemies, which makes combat a blast. The music is not that bad, I actually enjoy it. If you have not played this in a past life or love retro shooters. I highly recommend to kill stuff in the game, Killing Time. Naja "muss". Nur eines müsst ihr: Es wissen. Meine Empfehlung habt ihr jedenfalls nicht.
It's pretty amazing how much TLC went into this, they just added the 3do version plus an enhanced 3do version. The game is what it is, if you are into boomer shooters it's actually rather good. Great atmosphere, interesting characters that appear as ghosts annoying mazes it's got it all plus great fantastic music. I'm really nostalgic for it since playing it so many years ago on the 3do. Nightdive really spoiled us with this niche game I love it.
Nightdive Studios has once again, done an excellent job remastering another retro FPS. They even added the original 3DO levels after the game launched, which I am sure is a gift to those who grew up with this game and love it. I am not one of those people unfortunately. KILLING TIME: RESURRECTED is a charming and very quirky FPS originally released in 1997. The game has a few unique qualities to it that help separate from the legions of DOOM CLONES. The game's story is told through FULL MOTION VIDEO "cutscenes" that occur during gameplay, and it is simultaneously charming, and corny and tedious. Another unique element is its structure, where you have access to a PSEUDO-OPEN WORLD and can freely explore many regions in whatever order to find key items to progress the story. I actually really like some of the visual designs of the enemies, some of which are digitized human actors, and some are original art assets; they have a creepy and surreal look to them. Shoutout to this game's music too, which has to be the most whimsical and funny music in a boomer shooter. It's either genuinely great, or so bad that it loops back around and becomes good. I pretty strongly dislike most other elements of the game though. Your character move speed feels too slow, the weapon roster is pretty boring and they feel very weak. Enemies are SUPER SPONGY and are not entertaining to fight, especially in this game's levels. These are consistently some of the WORST LEVELS I have ever suffered through in a retro shooter. These levels are one of two things: they are indoors in super cramped, surreal buildings with nonsensical layouts and absolutely swarming with enemies, or they are outdoors in very copy-and-paste looking environments that are much too big and boring to move through. In order to progress through the main story, you must find keys and key items. However, the game does not effectively communicate hints to the player as to where they need to go next. Much of my playtime was spent wandering around trying to figure out where I needed to go. I ended up clearing out many levels early in my playthrough attempting to find the critical path, only to be stopped by locked doors that I did not yet possess the keys to open. When I returned later with the proper keys, it was a BORING SLOG through very large, empty levels because enemies do not respawn and I had previously eliminated them all. I ended up using an incredibly helpful guide on steam to help me through the game. If I hadn't, I would most definitely dropped this game and not picked it back up. It's a shame that this game's mechanics and design are very frustrating and do not create a fun experience imo, because this game does have various cool and unique elements. Unless you grew up with KILLING TIME and are nostalgic for it, I do not recommend this game.
Apart from the cool FMV sprites and aesthetics mixed with the way this game unconventionally tries to tell story through little "cutscenes" it's an absolute disaster of a game. Has some of the most random and weirdly mixed soundtrack i have ever heard. 1 moment it's eerie ambience and the next it's the freaking carnival theme or wacky jazz. wtf The absolute most abyssmal level design i have ever seen with complete lack of hints or logic to progression so you're left aimlessly exploring just to find another locked door and have to backtrack again because this game is 1 big world instead of traditional levels, cool concept absoultely butchered in execution. And on top of the bad level design the game throws dark souls 2 levels of enemies at you just 24/7 everywhere seemingly randomly placed. Awful! The guns also lack that feel good punch the genre is usually known for although the models themselves are cool to me at least. Overall, good port as per usual from nightdive but wow the game itself sucks. Review Made For Boomer's Noxi
For starters, I had critical save file issues. Starting a new game with the base maps after first completing the 3DO levels, while using cloud saves to go back and forth from my Bazzite PC and Steam Deck, led to several problems. I typically stagger my save slots, and overwriting slots from my first playthrough with saves on my second playthrough sometimes worked, but other times slots would be named incorrectly, and sometimes all items and enemies were reset to their starting states. My location would load properly, but I'd lose all my guns, keys, and essence bottles leaving me with just the handgun and the starting amount of bullets. This was a huge problem on my second playthrough resulting in lost progress and wasted time. It's for this reason alone that I leave a negative review, and the rest of what I say here is what my review would have consisted of if I didn't encounter these issues. I bought this for the 3DO levels and I cannot believe how much a little acceleration absolutely transforms this game. It goes from being a very rough and sluggish headache to a smooth and responsive shooter on the level of the original Doom. The fast pace, the enemy density, the key hunting, the shotgun shooting, and the maneuverability truly feel like a completely different game experience now that it's freed fr the confines of the 3DO hardware. I can actually aim my guns and dodge the bad guys now. Even better, I had never played the PC version of this game, and I was amazed to realize those levels are actually superior to the original 3DO versions. They are bigger, and the architecture actually resembles what the locations are supposed to look like in the game. You actually start off on a boat dock. The mansion actually looks like a mansion. And there are landmarks that actually resemble what you would see on a small island. I don't say this lightly, because the original Killing Time is a game I have always liked for its early CD-ROM sensibilities but never actually thought it was more fun than it was painful, but this is the best remaster I have ever played. It turns this game into something that is sincerely enjoyable, and it lets the original game design shine in a way that has been impossible for the last several decades.
Cheesy as hell, but a fun classic FPS. A relic of a bygone era blending FMV and classic FPS into a delicious cheesy mess.
Killing Time: Resurrected is a fun romp through boomer shooter history. Beautifully remastered by Nightdive Studios (as per usual), this game is just brimming with charm, which makes it hard to believe that this game seems to have gone relatively under the radar when it first released. The odd mix of animation and real actors is perhaps the game's strongest point, it creates such a unique setting and vibe that really hooked me into the world in a way I haven't been hooked in a long time. Each enemy feels unique, and the design is so odd that you can't help but remember it. As for the gunplay, I would honestly say this is one of the weaker points in the game. The guns are exactly what you would expect them to be, which I think hurts the zaniness they were going for with this game. You kill each enemy in essentially the same way, meaning there is no reason apart from ammo concerns to switch weapons or anything of the sort. *IMPORTANT NOTE*: I had no idea that you were able to use the vessels you find throughout the game as items, you need to use the [ and ] keys to toggle between them and ENTER to use them, and honestly they probably would have made the gameplay feel better than it did for me. Make sure to read the controls very carefully, there is no tutorial or anything of the sort. The map design was absolutely fantastic, with its sprawling open world it rewards a good memory and an explorer's mindset. It's easy to get lost at times, but you'll always find your way back to a familiar area eventually. There is never a wrong way to go, with rewards awaiting everywhere. On this note, the game essentially boils down to being a key-finding simulator with 20(!!) keys that are required to progress through the story. If this sounds like a bore to you they are admittedly quite easy to find, and you will likely find them all just by playing through the map, although if you do happen to miss one like I did it can get very frustrating figuring out where you missed it. My biggest gripe with the game is that I really wish there were either different or less frequent voicelines. Each enemy seems to have exactly one noise that they make in each situation, which can become annoying when you're killing 20 of the same type of enemy in a row. The worst offender of this is definitely Tess' ghost, which is scattered perhaps 50 times around the map, repeating "Help me!" every 5 seconds if you are within earshot, which you very frequently will be. These usually serve as indicators of where you can watch a ghost interaction, but my goodness does it ever get annoying when you're lost in the mansion and Tess won't stop asking you for help. Overall I do definitely recommend this game, I had a blast playing it!
