Game was great until it just stopped working all of a sudden. I cannot load it anymore, sent in I do not know how many bug reports I sent in and tried the internet for help, nothing. In my eyes, this is a dead game as I won't be attempting to load it ever again. It's very sad because I enjoyed it while it lasted, oh well. (edit portion below) Alright so, I can play the game again... Took some more time and looking into the issue. This goes for any UE5 game I guess as I came across the same issue in ANOTHER UE5 game, imagine that! Anyways, to fix the same issue I had where it just kept crashing, go to Steam, the game (this one in this case) right click it, and set this under launch options; -slnodlssg -slnoreflex -slnodeepdvc This essentially turns OFF Frame Gen. Also, I never turned Frame Gen on, ever. I do not know how to change it in the new Nvidia App as of writing this. Fixing this issue has made my review positive as it is NOT the game devs' fault, but rather Nvidia/UE5. P.S. The game is a lot of fun, and I do recommend picking it up. :)
Killing Floor 3 is a weird game to write a review for, man. This game is truly antithetical to the franchise as a whole canning it's horror roots for action but it also strides in it's own lane wanting to be something that sets itself apart from the previous mainline entries. Killing floor 3 is a game that wants to be a successor to Killing Floor 2 but falls on it face before even stepping out the door. It is a fumble on a scale that is worryingly becoming common place in modern gaming but it sets out doing it's own thing. This game is not a Killing Floor 2 successor and that's okay. Killing Floor 3 should coexist with the series that does it's own thing rather than succeeding on the previous iteration even if Tripwire doesn't see it that way. Big changes in Killing Floor 3 from the previous entry is a more nuanced skill tree that allows for more perk expression. This is a change that I think this game actually does better than the previous as you can build a commando that is to your desire. You could be a commando that specializes in mass clearing small zeds or a big game hunter that wrecks big guys. It lets you specialize in anyway you want rather than the stapled primary trash clearer. While defined roles are boon in a game like Killing Floor 2, Killing Floor 3 wants you to build a power creep. This game wants you to not be a role in a team but to be a power fantasy that can one man army. That stuff can be incredibly fun to build and play around with but it also feels selfish to a team as you serve no one but yourself. Another change is the amount of weapons in this game is astronomically dwarfed compared to killing floor 2. In its own ways its almost as stripped back as the original killing floor in it's arsenal but offers a pretty robust customization system to personalize and make your own stabled weapon via attachments. I think that stuff is great and hopefully gets even better as more weapons are drip-fed because yes this is the trajectory of every metamodern live service experience. Another thing that I quite enjoy is the ability to dash in combat. I think this small added movement creates enjoyable combat flow in which you can counter a husk fireball or a fleshpound's slam simply by side stepping. Really innovative stuff I say half jokingly. It does feel nice and plays again into the power fantasy. Okay now for some of the not so good. I really think maps are way to forgiving and do not have enough getting stuck in corner moments. The greatest foe in this series has been restrictive maps that pit you against a ever growing army of zeds or yuletide ginger breadmen when tis the season. I feel like I can just be functionally miles away subconsciously playing this game never really having to check my surroundings as the maps cater to me rather than the other way around having to learn the map finding escape paths or chokepoints. It makes for boring design in my opinion. The aesthetic of the maps themselves are just kind of whatever. I don't have strong feelings but a standout to me is City Streets offering a nice blend of what I would want in map design. Bad number two is the gun design in this game. I find a lot of the weapons to look quite gaudy and do not do a good sleek, ergonomic near-future militarism. Something about them just look very cheap rather than the opposite effect it is intended to have. The weapons themselves also feel just adequate at best to shoot during normal gun play. Something about them just feel too dialed in where they lack that kick from the other games but can still be satisfying to land headshots with in there own ways. Melee is the standout where I feel it's actually improved upon in this entry feeling fast but visceral. Number three is the characters so far as of release. I'm sorry but matcha, labubu, dubai chocolate, buzzword, Mr. Foster is not proper Mr. Foster. This is totally me as a reviewer being totally partisan on this but it's okay to have a sardonic money-obsessed day trading british chud that talks ♥♥♥♥. These characters need to have some chutzpah I don't know. Everyone is so anemic in this game, man. Last thing is the whole needing to reroll for the weapon you want thing. That just sucks and is uh not good. In conclusion Killing Floor 3 is a weird game that tries to be a successor but can not live up the the mantle to succeed where Killing Floor 2 left off. That's completely okay as it is its own thing that sets out to do its own thing. The end product is a rather enjoyable experience that fills it's own spot alongside the other previous two entries. It takes up the mantle of being one the most accessible for a general audience that has the foundation to grow into something truly great. I don't know what the future of Tripwire looks like or the health of this game as it is not making the recovery Tripwire desperately needs but I would recommend giving this game a shot when it is on sale as it is worth your time if you have enough change to spare. 3/5
