Really neat top-down Zelda-like that does some really clever and unique things with the structure. The game takes place in a multi-floor mega-dungeon, and rather than completing each floor and then moving on, there's a lot of movement up and down within a set of floors as you explore the dungeon. Your primary mechanic is the ability to take over enemies, with different enemies having different abilities and ways of interacting with the world. This means in addition to the standard Metroidvania structure of finding new items that let you reach new areas, there are many situations where you need to possess a specific type of enemy to reach an area.
"Kharon's Crypt" is an absolute blast of a game; a metroidvania / zelda-like 2D-action-adventure where you play as the titular mythical ferryman, who was entombed by a mad king that yearns for eternal life. Your goal is to escape your multi-floored tomb by possessing different dungeon critters that help you puzzling and fighting your way up to the exit. This game-mechanic is quite refreshing for every monster has different abilities and weapons, but expect some backtracking when you need a special kind of monster and it died on the way to the puzzle. If these don't help you still get a growing arsenal of different items to use (Exploding urns = bombs). For the bosses to appear, you have to summon them first using ingredients, which are hinted at in different story-pages. These pages are strewn out all over the crypt. The writing of these dark fairy-tales is sometimes convoluted, nevertheless it manages to express quite an eerie tone, which further enhances the overall dense atmosphere. The presentation is faithful to the quirky top-down Game-Boy-games of old (and for me the color-palette is too varied; sometimes the sprites wont stand out from the tiles that well), but the dark mythical folklore sprinkled with some lovecraftian vibes settles for a more sophisticated mood. Definetly check this out if you are a fan of the genre and definetly go through it all the way because the hubris of the finale is downright gorgeous.
The old school theme is fine but the movement is way too clunky for the annoying design of the enemies. The body possession mechanic is also ultimately shallow.
Amazing game. If you are a Legend of Zelda fan, buy it
This game is phenomenal and makes me question why no one is talking about it since it's been out years ago. The gameplay is smooth and feels right at home as a Zelda game. The many monsters you can fight and control are some of the most creative from a Zelda-like game. The puzzles got me stuck a few times but they are well crafted. The lore not only fills you in on the world outside but vaguely predicts what you are gonna face next. The bosses are tough but scary in a sense which I found a delight. The pixel art is gorgeous and perfectly fits in a Game-boy ascetic. The only issue I have is going back down and up and finding all the secrets as it becomes tedious. Other than that, it's a swell game. 9/10 -Arthurking6 (PS: I only bought this game so that I can hope that Necrocosmos can be developed and I can appreciate the indie genre more. It looks to be the pixel Magnum Opus for me. Also, HI HEBI "waves". Alright see you later)
Zelda +
