NOTE: Day and Night is the second part of Keeper series, the first one being Sun and Moon. You can find my review for it here
OK, the last time I had a proper weekend was not as recently as I would like. So, yeah, you can imagine how “much” energy I have these days. However, I willingly sacrificed quite a lot of my sleep hours this week to complete the game properly. Call me crazy, but text-based adventures are my big weakness. Also, I have two copies – one on mobile (bought it myself on the very day of release) and one on Steam (received free of charge for reviewing, big thanks to Hosted Games, as always). I will not lie – the previous installment had issues. Some races were stronger/more balanced (my poor, poor kitsune girl…), the story featured some overused tropes and pacing issues, and several characters got just too much attention (yes, Astrid, I am talking about you again!) compared to others. However, it was still interesting enough to keep me reading and completing multiple playthroughs with all available romantic interests – and there are a lot of them! When the demo for Day and Night was released on the official website – I think almost a year ago, or even more? – I immediately jumped into it. And was not disappointed either. There were hints at very curious and important events, and romances got good development too. And now the day has finally come to see how all of them will work out in the full game. Was I impressed, intrigued, annoyed, or even unhappy after completing it? Well, let us dive right into the review to find out!
Pros (a.k.a. Lucy Approves)
I think the best part about this series is the humor. No, really, the joke about OTP and shipping kept me smiling for at least 5 minutes. Sometimes the author tries too much to stay in line with zoomer things (for example, the part about livestreaming inside a dream was wee bit cringy), but all in all, there are a lot of nice funny scenes and lines in each chapter. I can also easily say that there is a bunch of good plot twists and mysteries that just keep coming and coming at you, and I cannot in good conscience say that any of them were dull or too predictable – which is a big plus. Another thing that I am very keen on is the quality of world building. Brynn Chernosky, as always, pays a lot of attention to magic theory, some important cultural aspects, different races and their special features, and even classes at the magic school. I think that a lot of thought went into the protagonist’s curriculum for various professions you can select, and descriptions for each subject is a really nice touch overall. Characters stayed as charming as they were in the first game, and their constant bickering is a lot of fun to read. And to take part in, of course. I really got a feeling of living in a dorm with lots of quirky people. Oh, and we can finally get our own pet! Guess which one I went for? (No, really, try to guess, I will be happy to discuss it in the comments.) As far as romance is concerned, I dare say it has improved. Maybe because the relationship has been steady for some time, or maybe because you get more scenes with your partner, but I can see some interesting developments – secrets, drama, hot/cute dates, etc. I even almost got into a love triangle (of sorts?). Romance suffers a bit from the general story flow and the way it is presented – which I will talk about below, - but I cannot say that it was badly written or cliché. Quite the opposite. So far, I have completed only Leon’s route, but I will be moving to others soon enough (well, when I finish several more playthroughs of the first game as there was no save feature at the time I did previous ones…bummer).
Cons (a.k.a. Lucy Disapproves)
At the same time, my main complaint remains the same as before - the style of writing. It has improved in some aspects, but I still do not like how the story jumps from one event to another, and then another, and then another. Sometimes it looks more like entries in a diary rather than a consistent flow. Also, more often than not, the author focuses on dialogues and actions, while most descriptions just stay in the background. I can even say that they feel disconnected - like, there is an island with dialogue and another one with the background; and I do not feel that they actually support each other. Also, some scenes end too abruptly – I do not feel any real consequences after them. And a lot of information being thrown at me at once can feel confusing too. Maybe it is just nitpicking, but…I do not know, the text just feels really dry for me at times. Even more so when it comes to politics. And boy is there lots of this through the whole story! If the first part – Keeper of Sun and Moon – just set the scene for interactions between parties and politicians, the second one starts exploring them to the fullest, even too much at times. And it would be alright as part of the lore, but my issue here is that the protagonist is right in the center of all this mess, and literally every chapter you are barraged with more and more information about political affairs. No, it is pretty logical from the plot point of view – after all, you are THE Keeper, one of the most important figures in the magi world. But do I like politics? Heck no! Do I want to take part in it? Double heck no! So, yeah, between the somewhat dry text and lots of political stuff, I found myself skipping some paragraphs entirely. At the same time, for some reason, the author is specifically really good at describing food and fancy decorations, so these parts were always a delight, no complaints here. Another thing worth mentioning is that there are occasional typos/missing words and coding issues. For example, in one scene you will see two reactions from the same character. I am sure that it is not an intended part of the text – it would look too strange to have two similar interactions with the same person right after another in one scene, both of which are reactions to the same thing. By the way, I have noticed this curious moment even in the demo version released long time ago, so no idea why it has not been fixed yet.
Verdict (a.k.a. Lucy Has Finally Finished Her Spiel)
At first glance, it might seem that I am disappointed with how the second game turned out. But it is not quite true. I think I am actually satisfied with most new parts – except for the heavy political ones, - but also still annoyed by the older drawbacks that have come to the surface again. Still, take my complaints with a grain of salt – I tend to dislike writing styles that present scenes in a rapid successions rather than exploring them to the fullest (like a theater performance). Keeper series do feel dry to me in this aspect at times, but it does not mean it will be the same for you. On the bright side, there is a solid story with a lot of interesting plot lines and mysteries that will keep you glued to the screen until the very last chapter. Characters are also very endearing, and there is a good variety to their personalities. You will definitely find somebody to fall in love with. And the world of magic itself is really well-written and diverse. So, overall, I can and will recommend Keeper of the Day and Night to fans of text-based adventures. P.S. By the way, demo for the third game in the series is already available on the Choice of Games Forum. It is just a draft version with several short scenes, but it will help you get the idea of what is coming.
More reviews on our Curator Page
So first I'll apologize if this review is not up to my usual par. I just completed my first play through non-stop and its 530 in the morning. So Yeah its that good. If the first book was a diamond in the rough, this book has seen that diamond freed and polished! Gone are the jarring change in scenes. Everything flows smoothly and nonstop even as the action changes gears from slowly building, to running full steam ahead, to backing off and taking time to think about whats just happened. Honestly its master craftsmanship on show here. The improvement in the quality of writing is impossible to miss. And the story line continues to be awesome. I've played through the first book at least a dozen times and still not gotten on every character route possible, but I did notice when the update for it went through two weeks back and played through with my favorite MC/LI combo for when this book came out! So glad I did! I really enjoyed how that relationship developed and how the MC and their family grew too. So now having seen the diamond go from its natural raw state to such a gem, I really really cant wait to see it in its final (Third book) setting. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into writting this second book, it shines from every page!
Oh god the romance with Leon tore my heart out at the end, okay, I love this series to death. I already bought three copies.
Better. The strange scene skips are gone. More fights. Stats are more understandable and manageable. More romance stuff. (Kol. :3). Only thing I didn't care for were governmental stuffs -> The ones where you listen to what an Act does and you either support it or not and a variety of other stuff related to it. Mhm. Everything else? Okay. I especially liked...
Where you end up in the forest with Marcela and Dominic and both of them swear that the other one is the "bad guy". So you can either "side with one or the other" OR...! You can freaking take them both OUT! THANK YOU! I ALWAYS wanted to freaking do that! So I did. And... Then being a nice MC, I dragged myself and both of them out of the woods.
You're welcome! Also, there is no Book 3 as of now (unless it's invisible to me) and towards the end of book two we know what's about to go down. So... I wrote the events/ending to Book 3. Because of Kol. You're welcome for that as well. Will you like it? Like I said, it's better than the first one. Action, etc. Romance? If you like that and well... If you enjoy governmental stuff? Or participating in it? The book awaits. But you make your own decision. You already knew that. Thanks book. A good read and a good snooze on some parts. Appreciate it! :>
A worthy successor to Keeper of the Sun and Moon, and worth multiple playthroughs. Having played it about a dozen times, at this point, each romance has its own secrets and twists, as does each background and each family situation. My personal favorite was a Kitsune with a single dad dating Seraphina, but there are so many intertwined secrets that even now, I've likely not played some of the most interesting combinations. If one has not played the first, I'd recommend buying it and playing it beforehand, as one would miss out on an enormous amount without it. In all, an excellent game, and one of the best hosted games I have played.
I liked the first game. Was it a little rough? Yeah sometimes, but never rough enough to ever really be a complaint. All of its good points far outshone its bad points. Absolutely everything has been improved here. The characters are more fleshed out, your Romance Option practically turns into a deuteragonist and you get all the possible time you could ever hope to spend with them. My chosen RO (Thalia) had a route that was so good that it actually makes you really think about spoilery past actions and whether you would want to stay with her even if you love her. My MC, a Magician who in the past game always felt like he was at a severe disadvantage, finally starts feeling actually powerful. The characterization of your MC (At least mine) was absolutely flawless. I don't know if it was all a beautiful accident or all those little personality stats that are mostly useless in these games were finally put to use by a writer who seems to have unlocked the hidden art of their true potential. It wasn't like some other games (Read: Fallen Hero) that have a well written MC who at many points doesn't feel like your MC because they're a little too well defined and the author needs you to feel something for plot purposes. No, at no point did I ever feel anything other than "yes, this is exactly what I would do or feel". There were multiple times where I would be making a snarky comment to myself as I was reading and then I'd read down a few lines and my MC is damn near quoting me. Remember how there were secrets to be found in the last game? Well there's even more now. There is *so* much to explore in this game that I'll be making a rare move for me and replaying it many times. I actually feel like I need to go for a sort of golden version of my ideal route, and like it would actually be worth it to do so. I'm a big fan of Choice of Games/Hosted Games. Their best books are really worthwhile experiences and absolutely worth it. This is the new crown holder of best book. Some settings might be more interesting, but nothing else has such a perfect combination of great engaging plot, perfectly executed Romance Options who feel fully fleshed out, replayability, still a great setting, and just everything you could want in a choose your own adventure book. Edit: I'd like to point out that this book was very good about the whole stats issue. The one where so many authors go crazy and make the whole stats system a nightmare where guessing what stat is being tested is more challenging than the strict stat management you'll need to do to play the game. I never really had that problem in the last game, and like everything else it's improved in this game. Not once did I get that classic Choice of Games or Hosted Games moment of "wait, *that's* what was being tested?" shortly before a string of swearing.
Tbh, I debated whether it was even worth bothering to review this tripe... buuut, in the interests of off-setting all the glowing (& imho largely undeserved!) praise everyone else seems to be heaping on it, figured I might as well throw in my two-cents worth. Note, I didn't really have the time to get into the 'meat' of the game, due to that insufferably constrictive two hour limit Steam insists on enforcing; thus, I wasn't really able to get a full picture as such... still, from what little I DID play, it seems that much of the same flaws & gripes that plagued the first game are still VERY much in evidence. I'm not gonna waste my time going into a big detailed synopsis or anything, as, quite frankly, I really cannot be a*sed; suffice to say, though, if any of the following annoyed you about the previous 'Keepers' title, you'll probably wanna stay WELL clear of this one..! -> Painfully on rails story? Check. -> Side characters who vary between uninteresting to just flatout unlikeable? Check. -> The usual focus on "min-mixing" stats if you want to stand any chance of passing certain skill checks, thereby locking you out of preferred roleplay/tactical options? Uuuh, check. -> The crushing realization that the vast majority of your 'choices' don't really matter in the great scheme of things, & that your PC will simply be dragged from pillar to post like a leaf in the wind, irrespective of whatever real thoughts you may have on the matter...(Honestly, in 9 out of 10 cases, your responses to most situations can be boiled down to either, A) slack-jawed enthusiasm, or, B) an ever growing sense of exasperation/frustration... Have a cookie if you can guess what I went with!) Check, check, & double check... I dunno, dude... maybe I'm just missing something here..? For whatever reason, both this game & it's predecessor seem to be pretty popular, at least in 'some' circles...*cough*harrypotterf*gs*cough* - alas, alack, it's evidently just not my cup of tea! (Still, shame I couldn't have at least seen the results of sneaking in that vampire blood...) Edit - almost forgot, quick side note; the demo version is bugged & can't (at least at the time of my last attempt) be played; whenever you go to enter your name, it just goes to a blank white screen... there's no way to bypass or get rid of it, least so far as I could tell; your only option is to manually close the app - so much for "Try before you buy"..!
