"Keeper 2119" is a student project from Toulouse Lautrec. This year the students passed, they made a reasonable first person adventure game with a bit of platforming and puzzle solving, all welcome stuff (just look how successful Portal was). If this was a paid product I probably wouldn't suggest gamers buy it, it is small, limited in scope and of course compares poorly to professionally developed games. However, being completely free gives a game a lot of leeway. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Yes, believe it or not. While this is far from a perfect game, the deficiencies and drawbacks can be overlooked due to the zero up front price and the value you get out of it. It's greater than the sum of its parts, and worth downloading if you're a fan of this kind of gaming experience.
Overview:
'Keeper 2119' is a first person puzzle platforming game where you assume the role of an individual that somehow became controlled by a mysterious force and must overcome a series of platform-based puzzles using a tool called the "Translocator Device" in order to escape the strange reality they've been imprisoned in. The plot itself appears very vague because honestly, it is. It doesn't seem as though it was thought out very well and feels like it was just shoehorned in for the sole purpose of having a story. Maybe the story gets more fleshed out during gameplay since there's voice acting but I could not decipher anything the strange voice in the game was saying due to how strong the echoing was. I get that the developers were trying to make the voice sound like a mysterious spirit or being but it really comes off as incomprehensible jargon that just makes players scratch their head wondering what the narrator said. There are subtitles but all it does is show "Strange Voice" every time it speaks. What's the point of having subtitles if you're not quoting dialogue in the game word for word? Other than that 'Keeper 2119' is at least playable and isn't very difficult. It took me about half an hour to beat but honestly it might take even less time since I fumbled quite a few times. It isn't horrible but lacks a handful of basic functions that literally almost every game (even bad ones) do correctly.
Gameplay:
Again, the gist is that you're given a special teleportation device consisting of a ball called the "Translocataor Device" or "T.D" for short and need to utilize it's capabilities in order to progress through levels. What you're meant to do is throw it and then teleport to where the ball is situated whether it be on a moving platform or a ledge too high for a regular jump to clear. It's a neat concept and the game also introduces different two different abilities in two of the three levels adding a bit of variety to the entire game. Yes, unfortunately there are only 3 levels to play and all can be beat fairly easily and quickly. The first level gives the player the ability to view the map from the balls perspective, the second adds magnetic fields to platforms and the third contains walls that disable the ability to teleport. Each level offers different types of challenges but all are easy to complete. It actually isn't a bad game to be honest and if you can get behind the flaws in the game which I'll get to soon, it's a pretty good little platforming game.
Controls:
'Keeper 2119' plays okay but feels a bit awkward. For starters, moving around feels grid-based meaning when you stop walking, sometimes the character will continue until they seemingly stop at the next tile over. Many cheaper games have this type of awkward movement system as well and it doesn't play well in the slightest. Thankfully it doesn't cripple the platforming in the game so it really just comes off as a pet peeve rather than a underlying issue with the game. Overall, general movement works fine and isn't broken in any way to my knowledge. Now remember when I said there were basic functions that were, well, lacking? It's because the game is missing some fairly crucial elements that were supposed to be in it. What could these be you might be wondering? Well the first and foremost is a missing settings menu. Yes, they actually either failed to add in a functional settings menu or simply forgot about it because clicking on the settings button on the main menu does nothing. This basically means that there's no control menu telling you what key does what. The other problem is that the continue button also doesn't work even if you already have an existing game. Thank goodness the game is relatively short cause I'm not a fan of playing long games that have no save feature in place. The last gripe I have with this game is that while you're in game, there doesn't seem to be a way to pause the game. Pressing escape just brings up the mouse cursor but the game doesn't stop nor is there a pause menu. I'm assuming there was supposed to be one but like the settings menu, the developers forgot to put it in. I'm at least grateful that the game gives the player straightforward and easy to understand instructions on how to play the game at the beginning of each level, otherwise you could potentially get lost trying to solve these puzzles. To be fair, a game doesn't necessarily need these menus to be functional, hell some games just start the gameplay immediately and have no pause feature or anything, just straight up gameplay. The problem is that 'Keeper 2119' has these buttons and stuff in place but none of them work.
Graphics:
Looks decent enough but could use a little more depth to the world. The entire game is just lots of repeated textures and doesn't look particularly appealing to the eyes. It looks like one of those cheap or free indie games you find online that you can play for free. That being said, you can literally play this for free too as well as find it online via Steam so I suppose 'Keeper 2119' fits right into that niche. Lighting is pretty as well and I haven't run into any shader glitches or graphical issues. The only time something remotely glitchy happens is when you leave the anti teleportation walls in the third level in which the screen will kind of flicker but I think that's intentional and not a visual problem. Overall, not bad in the graphical department but could definitely have some textural variety. But for a game this short, does that really matter?
Audio:
This is probably one of those uncommon instances where voice acting is more prevalent than sound effects and music. There's music on the main menu which is relatively loud and honestly the game could do without and the sound effects are fine enough but are very minimal. There's no music during actual gameplay as it's replaced with a rather unsettling ambience that I guess fits the atmosphere but the voice acting as I mentioned, isn't the best. The strange voice that narrates every now and then has such a strong echo that you can't comprehend what it's saying. There aren't any settings to adjust volumes either because like I said, the settings literally do not work. Bum.
Conclusion/TL;DR:
'Keeper 2119' is a first person puzzle platformer game where you use a teleportation device in the form of a ball you throw and teleport to in order to progress through various puzzles. The game itself isn't bad and contains 3 short levels and can be beat in potentially less than half an hour. It is however missing some significant functions like a working settings menu, pause menu and continue option. Other than that, it's actually a fun little puzzle game that can knock out a few minutes of your time. If you're looking for a short but passable first person platforming game, this one isn't the worst as long as you can get behind a few caveats regarding the games menus.
