Rating: Dito: 4.3/5 Chat: 4.15/5 Gesamt: 4.23/5
The graphics are cute, music is good. Gathering materials for crafting is fun. Died a lot during gathering. I am an explorer I absolutely dislike the idea of running back and forth to save points to regain my pathetic one minute health.

Good for you!
Overview:
'Kari' is a top down adventure game where you play as Kari, a female viking that gets swept away in a storm out at sea and finds herself on a mysterious island known as "Vanaheim" that makes it very clear that she does not belong there. It turns out a god named "Odin" saved her in a typical "Chosen One" cliche and washed her ashore this island. With the help of the island's inhabitants along with three gods that also reside there, Kari ventures off on a treacherous journey as she seeks help from whoever is willing to lend it to her. Inspired by Norse mythology, 'Kari' attempts to explore the whole concept behind the topic but does a very weak job with it and throughout my entire playthrough I had no idea the game was even themed around Norse mythology. The plot itself is alright I guess but it does little to compensate for the incredibly bland and frankly broken gameplay from the beginning of the game to the end. I can understand the lack of quality for a game made by students, but seriously, people who develop games, should thoroughly test said games. This is standard for literally any game because if I have to be honest, 'Kari' isn't only boring, but it's also broken in more ways than one to the point where you can't even finish the game. Now that, is a seriously big red flag for anyone thinking about playing this game.
Gameplay:
If you're a fan of item hunting, fetch quests and going back and forth to do the exact same thing for hours on end at a gruellingly slow pace, then 'Kari' might be for you. The entire game consists of the player running all over a map that's way larger than it should be picking up various items and crafting them into things required to progress in the game whether it's finishing a quest, clearing a passage or trading for an item. Item management is a must as well as item tracking. You'll be managing your backpack as well as keeping track on items you need on a constant basis and it can become extremely annoying because there's never a time where you aren't doing at least one of these things. It's the definition of repetition. Then you have the questionable health system. You aren't meant to be on the island of Vanaheim so how do the developers portray this? Why by having you constantly lose health of course! That's right, not only do you have to run around mindlessly looking for bits and pieces like an squirrel before winter, but you also have to watch out for your deteriorating health for if you die, you lose everything you're carrying and must start from scratch. Not only that but you can't even load from a checkpoint because when you die, the game saves. Now that's a slap in the face in what's already a kick in the ass of a game. You have to search for shrines that when touched, fully heal you, resetting your death counter. And you better keep track of all these shrines because you're going to be scrambling for them over and over again. I can't think of a game more repetitive than 'Kari' where every single gameplay aspect consists of repeating the same tasks, it's absolute madness. Then after all that hassle, you'll end up finding out you can't even escape the island because the game is literally broken. If you're reading this review, then you got lucky because I personally had to find out the hard way. And I have to say, to play over 10 hours of this boring slog of a game just to find out I couldn't even beat it was one of the most infuriating things I have probably experienced playing any bad game. This is by far the biggest issue with the game. The ones are either trivial or break the game in other ways. The game doesn't hold your hand and is extremely cryptic in many parts of the game attempting to throw riddles at you to solve which sounds fun but trust me, it isn't. There's also nothing stopping the player from doing certain tasks ahead of the story quest, but this can actually break the game because you simply weren't supposed to complete that said task. If that's the case, why are you even able to do such things? There seriously needed to be some quality assurance testing for the game because I'm wasn't the only one running into problems with this game. Then comes the performance problems. This is something I have never experienced from any game in my life. At first, the game runs fine and I was garnering over 300 frames but overtime the frames gradually dropped until I was at a choppy 30 frames. Only when leaving the area into another map would the frame issue fix. I have no clue how that even works but the fact that it's there shows once again, that this game isn't only programmed badly but is also poorly optimized. I feel as if the game could've been "okay" at best but that's only if the game adopted more things to do aside from constantly picking up tid bits while travelling through areas you've already seen a hundred times just to progress in the game. The map's layout is also confusing as all hell with many areas looking similar with little to no visual differences. Even the dialogue and plot in the game is so weak to the point where it doesn't even matter. It already has little to do with Norse mythology and with it being paired with already boring gameplay, Odin would've been better off letting the waves take Kari.
Controls:
Ugh, I already stated how repetitive and boring the game is and the controls are no better. Use of the mouse is nil as everything is mapped out on the keyboard. That isn't a bad thing per se but this game seriously needed better controls given the circumstances. Walking around is fine for the most part but there are areas that you can easily get stuck on despite there being no obstructions. There's also no way to sprint or jump which this game seriously needed. It's just walking around. Crafting is also awkward and items required to craft certain items aren't even highlighted. I see an image but what the hell does that tell me? If I've never seen the item before how am I going to figure out how to get it? There are also a variety of rocks in the game that all look similar so when it comes to using them in crafting, it's almost impossible to tell what rock is what because the game gives you no way of hovering over the item needed. This is where the mouse could've been useful.
Graphics:
I already mentioned the performance issues, but the game alone is a graphical mess as well. On the surface, it looks decent with a 'Torchlight' vibe to it but when you actually play the game, you'll discover numerous lighting and shading issues riddling the world that make it look way more ugly than it should be. Colors are also inconsistent with some maps looking bright and vibrant but once you enter another map, it's oddly dark. Overall just a disaster of graphical error.
Audio:
Mediocre at best. On top of a meh collection of sound effects, the music is monotonous, forgettable and also a lot quieter than the rest of the game. At least the volume settings are plentiful otherwise that would've been another strike against the game.
Conclusion/TL;DR:
'Kari' is a top-down adventure game with zero combat elements and has a very and I mean very tiresome style of gameplay consisting of constant hunting for resources to craft items to progress in the game along with constant monitoring of a health bar that continuously decreases. The entire game is full of tedium in the forms of empty fetch quests, item management, boring item crafting and immense backtracking. And in the middle of it all, you're scrambling for healing shrines so you don't die and lose all your items. Along with a litany of game flaws (one so bad it prevents game completion), 'Kari' is just a bad game in every way as it is the pure definition of the word "Repetition", or in this case: "Insanity".
Przyjemna chillujaca gra przygodowa i to za darmo.
h
i feel like most comments have pointed out the pros and cons of this game. the game's just a bit too tedious for me, i gave up wanting to finish the playthrough.
it's okay
