Is it a faithful recreation of the original Karateka? Eh, kinda I guess, but the lack of any actual combat mechanics is still pretty disappointing. On top of that, the reused attack patterns, plastic/emotionless faces used for some characters, and forced tutorial at the beginning of the game/runs make it extremely rough around the edges too. It's cheap is probably one of the best things I can say about it, but recommending it to anyone who isn't a curious fan of the original is a hard sell
I'm reminded of that song from that "comedian," where she sang about how she wanted to be a ninja. Man the internet is a weird place.
It can be mastered easily if you invest some time. Other than that, a well-made small project is worth the effort. Why not give it a try?
What a cool tribute! The game tells the same KARATEKA story but with a bunch of twist, its focus more on music recognition and parry mecanics and it makes it different and unique at the same time! The game is short, like 20 mins short, but there is a cool mecanic that if you die, you play as another character that is better then the previous one but its not the "true love" of the damsel in distress so the ending is not as happy as it has to be. If you found the game on sale, dont think about it and buy it. 8/10
Plays better than I anticipated
Karateka, the remake of the classic DOS game, is a delightful reimagining that brings charm and nostalgia to a new generation of gamers. The graphics are visually appealing, showcasing beautifully crafted art that enhances the overall experience. The accompanying music complements the aesthetics perfectly, creating an immersive atmosphere. The gameplay mechanics are refreshingly simple, focusing on parrying and attacking. This accessibility makes it easy for newcomers to jump in while still providing a satisfying challenge. However, the achievements can be quite tedious, requiring immense precision, which may lead to repetitive play. While some might find this frustrating, it can also serve as a motivation to master the game and improve your skills. One drawback is that the remake somewhat overshadows the technological innovations of the original title. Including the original version would have allowed players to appreciate the evolution of the game and contribute to video game preservation. Overall, Karateka is a pleasant experience for a few runs, especially for those looking to relive a classic. Just don't feel pressured to chase down the more challenging achievements—enjoy the game for what it is!
