-What is this, Wonka? Some kind of funhouse? -Why? Are you having fun? Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
This game is one of those rare indie titles that really gets it right. The art is striking and full of personality, setting the tone perfectly from the very beginning. Every visual detail feels intentional, helping to create a world that’s both engaging and thematically rich. One of the most interesting mechanics is the real-time progression in certain segments. You have one hour to complete a part of the game, which adds tension and urgency in a way that fits the story’s tone. It’s a smart design choice that makes everything feel more immediate and immersive. That said, it could be stressful for players who need more time to read or process text—especially those with dyslexia for example—so having a toggle for this mechanic would be a great addition in the future. The narrative is strong and thoughtfully presented. While the game is linear—you do need to complete everything to move forward—it gives the illusion of choice in a way that keeps you involved. Optional lore is scattered throughout, and it's handled especially well. You can dig deeper into the story and characters if you want to, or move through the main plot more directly. It respects different play styles without sacrificing depth, although you will struggle in some areas like puzzles if you don't read all documents. Another standout feature is the multiple endings. Each one adds new layers of information, encouraging you to replay and piece together the full picture. It’s a satisfying system that gives weight to your actions and makes the world feel more alive. The achievements are fun and well-designed, rewarding exploration and experimentation. The music fits the atmosphere nicely—subtle and moody, just what the story needs. Occasionally it cuts out a bit abruptly, which breaks immersion slightly, but it’s a small issue in an otherwise great soundscape. If I had to criticise anything, the menu design doesn’t reflect the visual tone of the game at all, which creates a disconnect. When I first opened the menu my first thought was "hmm is it one of those random weird-makes no sense game?". Apart from that, currently, there’s no way to remap controls or adjust audio settings, which could be frustrating for some players. Still, these are minor flaws in a game that clearly puts a lot of thought and care into what it’s doing. The story tackles tough topics like corporate exploitation, burnout, and addiction without ever feeling forced. Everything is delivered through solid writing and atmosphere rather than exposition. A true treat of a horror RPGMaker-like game with a flavourful cast and a delicious story. Distinct and colourful, the artstyle is a good fit for this type of game, cute while being just off-putting enough to sell the horror atmosphere. The character designs have a multitude of strong points to them. For one how they are based on different sweets is very nice and well executed. Additionally the designs reflect the characters personalities and states, especially their different types of decay, phenomenally. All of the small pictures scattered around the game that you can find as well as the prominent CGs are all very well done too.
Also Dr. Candy melting towards the end fits very well with the world and is quite gory even without blood or actual gore.
Dr. Sugar’s whistling stands out as a particularly interesting soundeffect. It doesn’t sound particularly intimidating,
perhaps a remnant of when he was still sane, but it becomes a small scare around the middle of the game if one pays attention.
Overall the soundtrack is quite good as well. In terms of puzzles there are a handful of codes and keys, which are easy enough to figure out and find by reading the right notes. The true challenge rather is figuring out how to get all of the achievements and endings instead as at least half of them are not really straight forward. There is a good amount of worldbuilding to be found in all of the optional notes and the story relevant texts and interactions. The story around the player character is somewhat simple mainly being focused on escaping, but the surrounding cast of characters from the other victims to the employees is very interesting, each rather likable with their own quirks and backstory. I have two small things to remark critically. What is definitely missing is a settings menu to adjust the volume or put the game on fullscreen, but it’s not that big of a deal since the game can be put into big window mode at least and the game volume can be adjusted via the pc’s volume. One quality of life addition I would very much like to see, in all games that have a timer like this really, is an option to pass the time quickly, something like sleeping in a bed or chair, so you don’t have to just stand around for minutes on end until the timer runs out when you want it to. Bite-sized and free, I can definitely recommend this all around gem of a game with great wrapping and a tasty centre of a mix of compelling characters and a rich environment.
10/10
This is the game I’d vote for Game of the Year. The story is amazing, and I’m surprised the fanbase is still so small. I just don’t get why this game isn’t more popular right now.
As a person who likes to try every option of dialog I really like that some finales and archivents need the influence of the player. And I have to say I lost more time than I would like to admit with the broken fan which look like its going to fall.
