When I was doing the little introduction to city building and the game started to tell me about local precipitation levels and its potential impact on my city, I suddenly knew what sort of game I was playing and I was completely on board. There isn't an absolutely distressing level of depth to the games systems, but neither is it so shallow to be utterly boring. The game manages to sit in a sweet spot of simply being fun and engaging without drifting too far either way. Even things like the little colour cube connecting mini game that I worried was going to outstay it's welcome is given enough mechanics fed into it to be a core part of the gameplay, probably representing almost as much time as combat does without making me dread it occuring. I've never played a game from the studio before or even heard of them, but I'm glad I've tried this one on a whim.
First of all, a PSA: game runs on steamdeck! The game takes a while to get going, but once you get past the tutorial phase and unlock city building and cooking, it's a fun mix of exploration, RPG and management game. None of the gameplay elements are particularly difficult and the storytelling is kinda shallow, but the synergy of it all makes it so that there is always something to do for you. For those who remember a somewhat older title named Dark Cloud, this is what the game reminded me of. But I'd say that those who enjoy the Atelier series (gameplay wise), might also have fun with Kamibako. In retrospect I wouldn't pay full price for it again, but it's an easy recommend, if you manage to grab it on a discount.
I have to give the game props for attempting some new things but being that it's part 1 of a slew of games without mention is really frustrating. The game also suffers from being very repetitive. Every time I go to start the game I can't get myself to click play because I feel like after 10 hours I've seen pretty much what the game has to offer and that my time would be better spent elsewhere.
I never write reviews for the games I play but I felt like a number of the reviews currently written don't truly reflect the game well. That's not to say they don't have fair criticisms as I agree that the game has some interesting elements that could do with more depth but it's in no way as dull or bad as some are suggesting. It's clear a number of people bought this game blind without trying the demo first and I'd suggest playing the demo before making the purchase. To talk a bit more directly about the game. There is a charm to the presentation and it's obviously been influenced by it's Japanese developers with characters having that 'anime' ascetic and cutesy voices. There isn't a great deal of variation to the NPCs but the monsters seem varied enough for what I've played so far. Game play attempts to blend a few genres and I'd say it does so fairly well, mostly because it doesn't attempt to over-complicate and reinvent too much of the wheel. There is a decent level of depth in some areas and players are giving quite a bit of agency in the building and crafting. Although this could be off putting due to the lack of explanation in some of these systems. On tutorials, this game does have a quite a long one but I found it worked into the story and wasn't so much of a slog that I rolled my eyes on the next tutorial beat. It could be streamlined however and as previously mentioned some system could serve from a quick FAQ area in the menu or prompt to explain how it works. Combat sees you taking more of a supportive role rather than outright control of each character and they lean into this by having a auto battle option which I'm sure I will welcome later in the game if I ever need to grind for items. That's not to say taking control of the characters is lacking depth as you get to manage swapping out weapons which have different abilities and crafting weapons allows you to create new abilities and strategies. Exploration is tile based with the charter unlocking the next map tile as they move over it, occasionally revealing hidden treasures or monsters. I found it pretty engaging and I found myself wanting to reveal every area as quickly as I could. While exploring you may come across some dungeons that combine most of the mechanics found in the game, some variance here would have been nice as it can get a bit tedious after the first few floors. They do serve as great EXP spots and have unique bosses on the final floors that make them worth slogging through. I've not touched much on the building elements in the game and that's simply as I've not had to do much of it. But it seems the most involved of the systems and I look forward to sinking my teeth into some more. Overall, the TLDR; The game achieves what it sets out to do, which is be a no frills amalgamation of a few genres without trying to upturn the apple cart too much. It has a cosy feel to it's game play not demanding too much from it's players but giving more free reign and agency to the few that may want to delve a bit deeper. Not for everyone but would certainly recommend people try the demo just in case it's for you.
Cool unique jRPG/trading simulator, starts a tad too slow for me and highly depends on randomness during "restoration" minigame sections.
