This is the hardest, most challenging, horror puzzle game you will ever play. 30+ hours of sanity-testing puzzles over the course of 10 horror filled levels. You are Kaetheran, an extremely powerful psionicist with a flair for cyberpunk style. You have awoken in a dank sewer without your mind powers.
Kaet Must Die
I've worked my way through a fair share of survival horror classic like Silent Hill, but I'm far from vetted on the genre as a whole especially modern offerings. What I do know from my time with cult classics like Eternal Darkness is that pretty much any horror game with a sanity meter is going to be a good, freaky time. And Kaet Must Die is exactly that.
Gameplay
The core of the game is all about finding your way through a grim and gritty maze of oddities with your life. Throughout each level you come across notes which will tip you in on how to play, what to do, where to go and when you're going to die (which is basically inevitable, it is in the title after all). Avoiding the creatures lurking in dark corners is important here and with only the psychedelic glow of magic mushrooms you find along the way will light your path. The magic mushrooms and their comforting glow are what will keep you sane, or is snacking on the local 'shrooms only going to make it worse? Either way, you don't ever really live long enough to find out but each time you die you come back with just a little bit more knowledge on how to progress and how not to have the piss shocked out of you each time by zombie jump scares. Trial and error is the determining factor of these levels, as you'll be dying very frequently before really even finding the necessary clues to figure out what the heck to do in the stage. Your deaths will be quite pants-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and in an attempt to regain your dignity (and possibly your clean drawers) you'll be pushed each time to figure out just a little bit more to get you further bit by bit between each harrowing defeat. There's something sincerely off-putting about the weird little munchkin creatures that giggle and chase you from the darkness, they aren't necessarily scary but they sure as hell make my skin crawl and getting cornered by one in the dark is no fun.
Visuals/Audio
Grimy, gritty, dark and dank. That would be the best way to describe the decrepit halls of these underground sewers you trudge your way begrudgingly through in search of an exit. Everything is deliberately dark in the game, almost to the point of being pitch black all in an effort to push you into requiring the irredescent glow of the mushrooms found on your journey. The zombies that pop up to freak you the heck out on those moments where you make a wrong step have a strangely sickening sheen to their skin, looking all moist and fleshy-like. It's all pretty gross, honestly, but that shock value is what this is all about! There's not much music to speak of in the game, which is fine for keeping the silent, mysterious and ominous atmosphere of the horror going. What it does have is some real ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unsettling sounds from the diabolical entities you share these darkened underground tunnels with. The gremlin-like cackling of the freaky little midget dudes (is that politically correct? can I say that?) as they close in on your position is terrifying mostly because you know its the signal of your impending doom, and of course the sudden shrieking of the lifeless corpses that jump to re-animation as you unknowingly and stupidly step close enough to one is where most of the jump scare factor is derived. As with most horror, its the factor of the unknown and the things that you can hear but not see that drive the fear and this game does a great job in that department.
Final Thought
This is a fun horror game to feel your way through, it takes a bit to really click and your first of many forays into the dark descent of rough and abrasive underworld mazes will end in confusing death. The notes and clues, and the little bit of knowledge they bestow upon you each time you manage to find one on any given life seriously push you on regardless, and subjecting yourself to the adrenaline pumping scares of the harrowing creatures becomes a bit of a morbid fascination, if not an addiction. Find the skulls before the timer runs out and lights are turned off (that is for the first level). There are 10 unique levels and therefore lots of game time. A visual masterpiece with some jumpscares. Little Tip, keep a good distance between the dead and yourself and youll be fine.
Where to start. If you love Jump Scares this is the game for you. From the creepy background noises of “You will suffer”, distinct “cries of anguish” and an overall just down right creepy vibe, to the evil Jawa like monsters that take great pleasure in driving you insane; this game is scary. I dare you to play this game in the dark with the volume up. The controls are easy to use, and the game is easily addictive. I highly recommend it.
I played, I screamed, I died... repeat. Never got past the second level lmao. Visually I think it's pretty nice, the atmosphere is super creepy, the bad guys are scary and the sound is creepy as ♥♥♥♥. I swear to any eventual gods that I almost ♥♥♥♥ my pants while playing. There was no menu music when I played though and would love some voice acting to the Kaet. The play mechanics are both simple and complex, which leads to some really interesting plays if you have the balls for it! 9/10 (would be 10 if I got the small notes above fullfilled lol!)- Will play again and have some more nightmares
This game is a perfect combination of Jump Scares with challenging puzzles. If you are a person who enjoys challenging puzzles with a no forgiveness enviroment I highly recommend spending time escaping from Annalinnia.
Playing as a goth girl trying to collect skulls to keep a witch away. You will die a lot. Suspenseful horror, keeping the darkness away. Racing against the clock - this surely is an awesome thrill! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eioi8G8ke9g
