Steam is full of sub par brick breaking games but Kabonk! really delivers and is one of the most fun brick breaking games I have played. There are so many familiar traits which will remind you of yesteryear and give you a retro and nostalgic feel but there are also some nice original ideas which supercharge the game, sometimes delivering on the edge of your seat gameplay. Most brick breaking games have one power up at a time but in Kabonk! you can stack the powerups which can cause absolute mayhem. Having over ten powerups simultaneously working their magic is a sight to behold, even if it is quite brief because of the destructive power it evokes, but it certainly puts a smile of your face whilst it unfolds. The game is a bit odd in the sense that you are a moving puck shaped object, rather than a bat, and you move around the arcade entering different halls and playing different games. Once you complete a game you physically move out of the arena and into the next. It might throw you at the start when the menu pops up and you are just sitting there, but you soon get used to it. The nature of the shape of the bat does make it harder to hit the ball because it is oval in shape and it makes the game feel like you have less accuracy than you would with a flat surface. The beauty of this game though is that the bat can move in any direction and has quite a large area to move around in, so you can move up and down as well as sideways. You can also hit the ball almost like a tennis racket and funnily enough the sound of the ball hitting the bat sounds just like a tennis ball. There are some very imaginative levels and some very imaginary powerups too. This is all combined with neon soaked arenas and a banging sound track which keeps the tempo high and noisy. There are some mechanics that I haven't seen before like blocks returning after a certain amount of time meaning you have to be quick and accurate in some places, and completely invisible blocks which can surprise you even when you are expecting it. There are some usual powerups like bat size, multiple balls and guns, but also some new powerups like pulsating explosive balls, electrocuting balls, and weird shape bats. I haven't worked out the mechanics quite yet but there's even trick shots you can attempt by hitting the ball with a strong upwards motion. There are environmental hazards like gravitational fields which change the path of the ball and it just feels very original and fresh. Each level has a top three leader board which could perhaps be increased to top five at least and there are meaningful achievements to keep you going. The difficulty does ramp up after level thirty and you do need to finish the previous level before you can attempt the next one so there is scope to get stuck. Level 34 seems to have got me at the moment because the bricks disappear and then come back, almost like a force field defending the bricks you need to break, but the game is very addictive and I have come close so many times so it just makes you want to play to finally succeed. Due to the curvature of the bat, I did get frustrated sometimes when I lost a ball which I thought I had hit, and some bounces of bricks seem unnatural occasionally but overall this is a banger.
🍳Conclusion🍳

Kabonk! is a great little brick breaking game full of energy and high intensity game play. There are loads of original mechanics surrounded by a neon lit retro arena which will keep you addicted for hours. I would definitely recommend this one to any brick breaking fan. Leuk!
Reminds me of some of the games we played as kids. I like the chaos, the special effects and the overall atmosphere. There might be some occasional panic involved when 8 balls come my way at the same time ;)
Pros: - The game loads quickly and it's easy to jump straight into a level, making it perfect for short play sessions. The level design complements this. - High-paced moments keep you on your toes, scrambling to keep the ball in play, and when combined with the powerups, the game becomes even more intense and exciting. The introduction of 3D blocks in a genre that’s usually 2D combined with physics-based blocks creates a dynamic layer to the gameplay. - Replayability is excellent, especially with the endless mode and global high score. Competing for the top spot and trying to beat your own time adds great incentive to replay levels. - The game runs smoothly even on older systems, like the AMD Ryzen 1500x & GTX 1050 TI. Cons: - One issue is that it’s not always clear which level you last completed, so you might find yourself hopping through portals trying to find where you left off. - Restarting a level can be a bit of a hassle. If you’re aiming to improve your time, it’s often faster to intentionally lose than to finish the level. Conclusion: Overall, the game offers great value at around 9 euros. I had a blast completing all the challenges and competing for the top spot. The sense of progression and the thrill of climbing the leaderboard kept me hooked. With quick, exciting gameplay and solid replayability for its price, it’s definitely worth checking out. Edit: I am now on the top spot on the Hall of Fame.
Kabonk! is a game i would recommend. It is a game that instantly grabs your attention. I’ve found myself saying “just one more go” a lot of times. And the levels are surprisingly challenging in a good way. Every level feels like a new puzzle, testing my reflexes, timing, strategy and also my nerves, but iI still want to try it again (sometimes also to get to the top of the leaderboard). It's easy to pick up, but mastering takes skill (and practice).
This is the classic game Breakout. The design is a neon lit arcade in which you go into different rooms as you unlock them. I have to admit when I first started, I said "what is this?". Then I figured it out, but should have been more clear. You step into a room as a garbage pail lid, which is highlighted by an open triangle. You play 5 different courses and you open up a new room. The powerups for the first room were a little uninteresting, although the larger blue saucer in the second room was very helpful as it made your garbage pail cover larger. I know it's not a metal garbage pail lid, but that's what it reminded me of. Is it worth it at this time? No, not at full price, but I would definitely buy it on a sale. The first room you enter when you first start is just awkward for someone first playing the game. It's a good game, but needs some tweaking, especially when you first start the game. Also, I think there should be an easier mode for less skilled players. There is a lot of promise with this game with some future updates. I'll end with the positives. Concept is a 10/10 Music is a 10/10. Supporting a new developer: 10/10 Really felt like walking around in a gameroom in the 90's. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/indieretrogamers
It's a real fun game, although I'm not that great at it, it does keep pushing you to get better and better. Has some awesome oldschool arcade vibes, but with some new mechanics like curveballs and some pretty neat powerups. Some fresh ideas in there which I really like. Overall atmosphere/looks/feel are spot on. Can recommend.
Great game, KABONK! is like Breakout chugged an energy drink. Bricks explode, balls multiply, and chaos reigns. I love it!
I kinda suck at this game, its frustrating when i have 1 little block left and just cannot hit it. But its a smooth, fun and good brick breaker game
This game puts a unique spin on the classic brick breaker by making everything feel physical, and it works better than you might expect. It looks and feels like you're in an actual space controlling a physical puck hitting a physical ball, kind of like air hockey, but bigger, with black-lights shining on everything and an oomphing soundtrack blasting in the background. The game is very challenging at first and even borders on frustrating, at least until you discover the ball speed setting in the in-game menu. Setting it to "Relaxed" brought it much closer to my skill level :) The next thing you'll discover is that power-ups stack, which is a really fun twist and opens up the gameplay a lot. All in all, I had a lot of fun with this game and will definitely come back to it!
