As a big fan of xianxia shows, I had never actually played a xianxia visual novel before, mostly because they are incredibly rare on Steam. When I came across Journey of Destiny: dependent origination, I was very excited to dive in, and it absolutely met my expectations. It is a fascinating read, filled with rich lore and classic cultivation tropes. Even though the CGs are AI-generated due to budget constraints, they are well-designed and do a great job of enhancing the experience. Remarkably, this game was developed in Ren’Py by a single person with no budget, yet it serves up 10 to 12 hours of deep storytelling and good writing. The game takes place in a parallel, superpowered world where cultivation rank and spiritual power mean everything. For many years, two massive factions have rivaled to be the most powerful of all clans: the Xuanyuan clan and the Tiansheng Demon Palace. Right from the start, you are presented with a choice between four different routes, focusing on the young heirs of the two major clans and two secondary characters from other clans. You experience the narrative strictly from your chosen character's perspective, and you get to access their distinct inner thoughts. While the story’s core milestones and major encounters happen across all playthroughs and essentially consist of events where these characters meet and interact with each other, each route features a lot of other exclusive scenes that detail what happened behind the scenes within each specific clan or with a specific character. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3755922961 The four playable perspectives bring completely unique flavors to the table. If you choose the Xuanyuan clan, you will be playing as Xuanyuan Lin, the heir of the Xuanyuan Clan. He has a special talent for spiritual cultivation and managed to achieve high ranks of power even as a child. Because of this, he is much treasured by his elders, who constantly spoil him by fulfilling all his wishes. However, Lin uses his influence not for selfish gain but to protect those in need. Unfortunately, despite his pure heart, he is destined to have a tragic fate. When choosing the Tiansheng Demon Palace route, you step into the shoes of Ling Na. She is the same age as Lin and matches him in power but stands as his exact opposite. She has a cold and cruel nature. She’s ambitious and power-hungry. She rules over her clan and the wider superpowered world with an iron fist. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3755923737 On the Qin route, you get to play as Qin Feng, the sole survivor of the Qin clan, which was massacred by the Xuanyuan clan. After Lin begs his elders to spare the boy's life, Qin Feng becomes Lin's closest friend and confidant and thus forms an unexpectedly deep bond with the one who is both his savior and, at the same time, supposedly his mortal enemy. Though it is the shortest route, the Yi route is likely the most surprising one, as its main character only has a brief appearance in the other routes. However, it brings one of the more interesting plot twists of the story. Here you get to play as Yi Haocheng (Yeyou), an enigmatic child taken in by Ling Na as her personal slave. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3755922923 The most excellent aspect of this visual novel is the complete lack of an all-knowing view per route. Being locked into a single character's restricted perspective / point of view amplifies the mystery and narrative tension. As you complete subsequent routes, you learn the characters’ backstories, and the unexplained plots encountered in previous routes receive explanations and closure. Seeing the same events play out from different angles sheds new light on character motivations and uncovers the true reasons behind the central conflict. The puzzle pieces start to click together, allowing you to deepen your understanding of the whole plot. For this reason, it is highly recommended to play the routes in the exact order listed on that initial choice. The first half of the initial route starts out lighthearted and cozy. I was secretly hoping the plot would go into an enemies-to-lovers direction, where Xuanyuan Lin and Ling Na develop feelings for each other, despite them being rivals, especially since there are a few scenes that hint toward that. However, the game quickly sheds any bubbly expectations and takes a dark, fatalistic turn. The writing masterfully pivots to explore heavy, mature themes, like Lin's tragic misplacement of trust, the deep isolation Ling Na faces as an authoritative ruler, and Qin Feng trying to balance his desire for vengeance and his loyalty to his friend. Ultimately, Journey of Destiny: dependent origination is a beautiful passion project, with a story featuring deep characters and plenty of surprises. Beyond the game itself, the developer is incredibly open, regularly sharing behind-the-scenes snippets from his personal life or from the development phase (this is pretty much the only game for which I am tremendously excited to read the news feed). He is deeply appreciative of any attention this visual novel receives and remains highly communicative and accessible through emails. On top of that, he actively listens to player feedback and is committed to improving the game post-launch. He hopes to continue the story in sequel games, since this project functions beautifully as a prologue, despite already being a complete, full-fledged narrative on its own. I have mixed feelings about this game, so it's gonna be a neutral review. Praises : +I actually like watching donghua, so I was excited at this rare opportunity to play smth similar. + The backgrounds are so pretty & atmospheric <3 Soundtrack is also nice, everything reminded me of unique Chinese culture. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3751810782 +For the first ever I've encountered a feature I found at first utterly confusing but then so fascinating \o/ After the novels with frequent choices playing linear stories without any choices at all seems kinda boring, I mean, the plot can be engaging enough but I still want to be a more active, more involved participant, not just an observer of the events :( Though I get it quite often there's only one specific storyline, we just have to follow it obediently without influencing anything. Just one version, no branches. But here a prefect solution was found :D Our choices don't change anything quite often, it's more like a guessing game. At first I was at a loss, the questions sounded weird but then I really found this idea entertaining. Comparing my vision with the author's is fun. It's not like novels with the illusion of the choice when despite your decision the char suddenly thinks it's not the time yet and acts in their own way ignoring my choice. THAT is infuriating, why was I even asked?! But in this case it's great! +Some plot twists were exciting, in general the story was entertaining. +There're achievements and a steam guide, though it's easy enough to get them. +It's one person's creation, I always appreciate all the effort of indie devs. I understand it's not easy. Though it turned out it's not their own story but an attempt to turn the novel they liked into a game. +The price is quite reasonable, so perhaps it's worth giving this game a try as it doesn't cost much anyway. Flaws : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3765435352 --Language-wise I can't say it's too bad, it's definitely readable but the quality, sadly, is still not decent enough. It's not like I want to nitpick, English is understandable all right, but it's distracting to come across such issues: sometimes pronouns (he/she) are mixed, sometimes there are no apostrophes, so words like weve kinda looked weird, some words are not translated at all, for example, I remember from anime that 'Nani?' means 'What?' and it was understandable from the context but what is 'Yamete' O_o ok, now I wasn't lazy to google it and find out that it means 'stop' :D but while playing I wasn't in the mood to do extra research :D Despite being annoyed at the quality of the text, at the same time I felt a bit reassured that for now machine translation can't replace human localization. It's simply not enough to translate things following grammar rules. There're too many examples of awkward phrasing, like 'ignored the difference between men and women'. Vocabulary should also be improved ( I haven't found any new words at all T_T) and such repetitive expressions like 'hid hidden motives' were frustrating, too. In general, the English text was too long quite often overlapping the settings. There's enough space above, it should be lifted a bit in the text box. Such things should be beta-tested. Plus, it's always annoying to launch the game and see the main page full of unknown symbols T_T to enter the settings and change the language I must know what is where but I don't T_T I had to ask ai to translate Chinese to learn that I need to click the third line. --The next infuriating feature was unskippable text T_T I'd have finished much sooner, I just couldn't make myself read the same lines again and again :( The story is the same in all routes, we just look at it from different perspectives, learn some new details. It would be fun BUT all those sentences I've already read before were unskippable & I couldn't change the settings into 'skip all' because rarely there were some bits of new information :( It was sheer torture :( Sadly, it's not the first time I encounter this terrible feature, I can't believe nothing can be done to fix that. --The concept of 'guessing' choices is cool as I've mentioned above but it's not for this story, sadly. As all the routes are about the same. Why do you even ask me if I've already played through the same events countless times :D It took me ten playthroughs to unlock all the achievements. Of course, I'm gonna remember all the previous key events, lol. --Three achievements look the same, sorry but it's lazy. The visuals for achs are so pretty, I even thought how nice it'd be to use them in my steam profile, I was excited to unlock all of them to relish the images but then suddenly this disappointment :( --I liked all the sprites but when their emotions were shown their faces were changed in such an exaggerated way it looked creepy. --Some plot details were jarring, though I get it that it may have been acceptable in the past to marry two sisters but the very thought was off-putting. I enjoyed watching how sprites changed while years were passing by, the characters looked more grown-up but not everyone, sadly. So reading about their potential love when the male char looked like a small boy was disturbing. --I think that light blue for the name of the story is totally lost in that background in the main menu. So, it's really hard to decide if I could recommend it or not. Sometimes I felt truly engrossed with the story but then for some time I was so annoyed & bored I couldn't force myself to finish it. It still needs some polishing, imo. Journey of Destiny is Cai Jiahe's VN format adaptation of the novel universe authored by 魔神吞天 (which was also partially adapted to manhua in the past). As the first part, or prologue, you don't get a complete start to end story here, but it does offer 10+ hours of content. While the original novels are set in the modern day, this visual novel adaptation is set in a fantasy cultivation world. The four routes change from whose perspective you experience the story, and follow each character from their early childhood to a specific event that segues into the next part of the story. With each further route, you learn more about the events, motivations and if you so want karmic ties between everyone. The routes should be played in order, as otherwise you will both have things spoiled for you as well as simultaneously miss out on necessary information to understand the plot. The very first hours have some excellent light-hearted comedic writing, but overall the setting is a brutal xanxia world with child slavery, blood sport, and extreme violence. Journey of Destiny is sure not potentially traumatizing in the way various Japanese VNs are, but it's also not an entirely harmless read. As far as choices go, there are a bunch, but most are rather inconsequential (and IMO shouldn't really exist). It's a mostly kinetic read, and I appreciate not having to combine all possible choice combinations in order to not miss out on anything. For now a majority of the game is AI-translated to English, but the author strikes me as fluent enough in English (see their hand-written drafts in this post) that the quality of the translation should be quite good after another proofreading pass. While reading the VN I took a boatload of notes about the translation, so hopefully in the near future this will already be improved. What I personally appreciate is that the translation stays close to Chinese expressions without sacrificing readability for it, so you neither feel you're missing out on meanings nor that you have to guess what is meant. All in all, the story makes sense in its present form, with the exception of a short transition to the setting of the original novels (which comes with a warning by the author, apologizing in advance that you might feel lost there). The art is entirely AI, as one might expect from a young solo developer with no budget, but it does the job and offers enough variety. The non-uniform art styles of the various characters were not much of a problem for me, and I assume it is necessary to have a certain comic book style for specific ones so they more closely resemble the comic book adaptations readers might already be familiar with. EDIT: Having been made aware of the demand for them, the developer swiftly added Steam Achievements, and they work well. I liked my time with Journey of Destiny and would happily go through further chapters.
Journey of Destiny (Dependent Origination) is an engaging visual novel that blends ancient Chinese fantasy, mystery, and time-travel elements into a compelling story. The world-building is rich, and the conflict between the different factions kept me interested throughout the entire experience. The narrative gradually reveals its secrets. The game's strongest features is its choice-driven storytelling. Decisions, leading to multiple story paths and endings that encourage replayability. How different choices affected the characters and the broader fate of the world. Themes of destiny, betrayal, redemption, and personal growth are woven together effectively, creating an emotional and immersive journey. The combination of ancient fantasy, suspense, soul-fusion concepts, and time-travel mechanics gives the story a distinctive identity among visual novels. The artwork and presentation complement the narrative well, helping bring the setting and characters to life. For fans of visual novels, interactive fiction, and story-rich adventures where choices matter, Journey of Destiny is definitely worth checking out. It's an ambitious project with plenty of lore, branching narratives, and memorable moments.
